Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Wow Dave you're doing really well. Sounds like your surgeon is very up to date - i've not heard about mechanical foot (calf) pumps, I know I will be having sexy white stockings!:hysterical:

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Listen to the others DaveGM - they know about these things :) As for carrying things while using crutches - you have to think outside the box! I've developed a number of ways to carry things while on crutches - I got crutch bags which slip on over the bottom of the crutch - those work well for small things like phone, pad of paper and pen, a paperback book, a can of soda, etc. I also use sports drink bottles with screw on caps - like joggers and cyclists use - the ones I have have a loop on the cap so I can hang it off a finger and still use the crutches. For bigger things - try using a tote bag or shopping bag with handles and either hold it with your finger tips around the handle of the crutches or sling it around your neck if the handles are large enough. The only things I have trouble with are hot things and big open things with fluid - refilling cats water dishes is a challenge - but filling the sports bottle with water, carrying empty dish plus sports bottle, fill dish at their feeding site - that works OK. Big heavy things? Well you probably should not be lifting anything really heavy anyway this soon after surgery - let someone else do that :) Also pockets are great - they can carry lots of things they were not designed to carry - I carried 3 small cartons of yogurt from kitchen to desk in the den today - just put them in my pockets along with the spoon, napkin, a can of coke, and a bag of chips. If you have a lot of things you carry around frequently maybe investing in a carpenter's apron with lots of pockets would be helpful - here's a picture of what I had in mind .... https://www.duluthtrading.com/store...-tool-belts/shop-aprons-shop-coats/85021.aspx

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Hiya Dave

A better day coming up :)

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Great suggestions Deb!! I am a coffee addict so I used a coffee mug with a screw on lid, with a slider to open/close the drinking hole and a handle that I could hang on my crutches.

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Dave, It sounds like you are doing very well. As most of us have floundered on "Over Doing It", Patience turns out to be a major lesson through all this. You are getting some good tips on carrying stuff with crutches. I cycle some so I put a handle bar bag on the front of a walker and duct taped a water bottle holder onto the walker and eventually a crutch (do you have duct tape over there?-it's a national treasure here). I used a light back pack some if I had to go any distance. Holding hot drinks was a real hassle (I just love my morning, coffee Americano). So I spent a a good deal of time (during my sleepless stages) doing serious research on coffee cups and came up with one that was sealed, wouldn't tip over and kept liquid hot for 8 hours (lesoning trips to the coffee pot)..
So you have to be patient, but along with patience you can utilize ingenuity. In fact, exercising that ingenuity or "experimenting"-even with all our limitations- is a big part of maintaing self esteem and some degree of confidence.
Also, I had to take sleep where and whenever it came. Sleeping only on the back was frustrating. Gradually this all changed and it was a wonderful day when I could sleep on my side.
Well, I'm sure things are going to progess for you even as you have to ride this recovery horse gently and slowly.
Best Wishes, Jim :thumb:

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

My thanks to you all for your recent comments.

Roger - The hospital stay was shorter and the pain whilst there was less on hip No 2. Since being home it is a similar pattern to last time - up and down progress but I think after less than two weeks some discernable progress. I think my recovery at this stage is possibly slightly ahead of last time but I know things can easily change.

djklaugh, Jimbo and Haldox - Thanks for the really useful suggestions. I've already discovered the usefullness of pockets and bags but not thought of different type of containes and cups etc. I'll look into these.

Smja and Nannyles - Best wishes for your forthcoming surgeries

Jacey - Your right - I overdid things. Slow and steady wins the race!

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Hi Dave

I guess there are those days during our journeys... one step forward, one or two steps back.

I have learnt so much from the varied experiences of people on the forum, it is so helpful to me.

I am sending you better days winging your way from OZ :)

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Sorry to hear you overdid it Dave, hopefully it will be a short-lived setback for you. Being patient is definitely the hardest part of the recovery. Hopefully as there are lots of ideas re carrying things for you to utilise you can be more careful? (Says she!...who is just as guilty!)

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

It's easy overdo it Dave - I think we all do it.

I carried everything in a backpack - still find it handy actually - and had a screwtop Thermos mug too. It's amazing how ingenious you can become.

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Second update after 16 days

Well its now day 17 after the op so here is a brief progress report.

The swelling of the leg and ankle which followed me "overdoing" it last week have subsided although the bruising particularly behind my knee is still there.

The resulting discomfort and pain has also subsided helped, I think, by a couple of days of little activity.

Since then the walking seems to be improving and I feel happy using one crutch much of the time inside but still two when outside.

I feel comfortable having cut back on the Tramadol but am still taking the full wack of paracetemol.

All in all I am happy with progress which seems to be ahead of where I was 6 months ago with hip No1. Perhaps its because this time I know what to expect and do not have the same unrealistic expectations.

I still know there will be ups and downs and just over two weeks is nothing.

I've been spending some time by scanning old family slides. Family history back to the late 1940's early 1950's. Parents and Grand parents who are no longer with us, memories of childhood holidays etc. Its all quite nostalgic!

Best wishes to all

Dave

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Sounds like you are doing very well Dave! I agree - you know what to expect this time. Long may your progress continue!

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Dave, your recovery is coming along very well. You are just impatient. The worst for me were 6 weeks non weightbearing. But looking back it was worth it. I attached a lunch bag with a velcro strap to my crutch, and carried my glasses, phone, coffee mug with lid etc. in it. Hang in there, and take it easy. You know, each week will bring new accomplishments, even though they are small. Time will fly.

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Dave, have begun following your progress as I have my second surgery (L hip) scheduled for Nov. 15. R hip done Feb. 28. Remember you have had 2 major surgeries in the past few months so that word "patience" is probably one of the most important. You are still healing from the first hip. Please keep updating, it is so encouraging to hear others progress and yes, even the setbacks. Helps to know we will all get through it and have much better mobility and lives. Keep up the good work!

Second update after 16 days

Well its now day 17 after the op so here is a brief progress report.

Good report Dave. I'm pleased to hear your setback was, as suspected, just you overdoing it. :wink1:

For a second hip and only 17 days out you still seem to be doing remarkably well. I just hope I can report such good progress in February. :happy dance:

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Good one Dave

As you say you are benchmarking against the first surgery and have a sense of being ahead with your progress. I am thrilled for you. :)

I have read all the useful tips of carrying things whilst on the crutches I now have lofts of ideas.

Safe healing from now on Dave :)

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Well Dave--you seem to be in great recovery mode! I have to admit I did enjoy having to decide which carefree activity I would pursue during early days--without any guilt.--and Judge Judy became a great pal!

I found myself comparing second recovery to first recovery all the time-measuring progress and each setback and every little ache and pain. But I also was way less careful and hesitant with the second--feeling so confident and brave--and also got a bit more healing time in the end to pay for my arrogrance--so I guess it is an effort not to overdo. :wink1:

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Don't beat yourself up....we all overdo things at times during recovery. It's natural to push the limits a little (or maybe a lot). You have the right idea to rest and take it easy for a bit and then go right on with a great recovery.

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Dave ...keep up the good work! Realizing you have over done it makes it easier to understand when you are doing it the next time. Everyone else here has offered any advice I would suggest. Pay heed, they know what they are talking about!

Re: Second replacemant completed and home now

Thanks for your updates, I am scheduled to have my 2nd THR in January and its nice to hear from someone still early on:thumb:

Its good you found something to keep you occupied, it will help you stay out of trouble(overdoing it that is)
