THR Sarak - There's Life After a Hip Replacement

After a difficult 2017 I’m sure you’ll have a brilliant 2018. I’m very impressed with what you’ve already achieved following your hip replacements. Wishing you a happy and healthy 2018

So is the plan to be out swiveling those new hips tonite?
Or maybe that was last night....
I know you're were living "life in the fast lane" Friday night....Wild Woman that you are :heehee:

We're going to stay in tonight. I like me some champs a couple times a year and tonight's the night!
Hope you have a nice NYE!
@SaraK

@Layla - Yes, Friday night was the bonus outing. Tonight is the big one - pulling out the floor length gown and glamming it! Same group is going out to eat, drink and, most importantly, dance at one of the local banquet centers. Since my favorite alcoholic beverage is champagne, this is my night! My son is driving me there and I'll take a cab or uber home but plan to dance, dance, dance!

Enjoy your night in! When you have someone special to spend it with, that can be even better than going out!:loveshwr:

Blowing New Years kisses and bubbles your way. Big hugs Sara. I just adore you. Shake that booty for me!!!!!!:cheers2::happydance:

Hi Sara
I hope your NYE is / was special.
Dining, then dancing while tossing back a little bubbly sounds fun!
You'll have to pamper those two new hips tomorrow after all that excitement.
Wishing you a peaceful relaxing first day of 2018!
@SaraK

I just got back from my first post-op visit (unless you're having a problem, my OS doesn't see you until a month after surgery). OS laughed at me going out dancing at 6 days post-op but said that, as long as it didn't hurt, it was good exercise. He was happy with my gait and my activity level and released me from all remaining restrictions other than "if it hurts when you do that, don't do that." Next visit in March.

The hip flexor still flares up some (and I stop the offending activity when it does). The piriformis is still tight and makes it difficult to put on socks and shoes. Both will loosen up over the next few weeks and are currently about on par with where they were at this point with the first THR. I'm walking further and faster and increasing the resistance level on the cycle on a regular basis. Last night I cycled for 4 miles and walked for another 1.5 miles on treadmill. Tonight will be a "weight training" day and I'll be able to increase the weight on the machines a little (I had been limited to 30 lbs previously and can now increase but will do so gradually, assessing how each new level feels).

I'm seeing a nice long bubble bath in my very near future!

Wonderful news! You continue to amaze me.
It's great you realize your limitations and adjust activity accordingly.
I saw a sign the other day that I may wear out on BoneSmart
"Pain is your body asking for change"
Good one.....know you'll agree. Wishing you a great day!
@SaraK

Great checkup @SaraK. Sounds like your surgeon has a sense of humor. Your devotion to exercise is great. I am playing around with resistance levels on my new bike. Rather interesting finding balance between what good hip likes and what bad hip tolerates!

Enjoy that bubble bath.

@MammaT - My "devotion to exercise" is fairly recent. I was somewhat of a couch potato before I started having problems with first hip. Then onset was severe pain (at one point, I couldn't rotate that leg at all without pain so severe I felt like I would pass out). I found out later it was a femoral head "insufficiency fracture" but wasn't seen on x-ray or diagnosed for a year. After the worst pain improved, it just gradually got worse and worse (as the collapsed area of bone was scraping away the cartilage) and I started doing less and less. My doctor was always on my case about needing to exercise and couldn't understand that I couldn't without making the pain too intense. She thought it was just bursitis but I knew it wasn't because there was no external pain. Along the way, she sent me to PT and I lucked into someone good. At one point, he was the one advocating for me and indicating in his report that there appeared to be a problem with the joint.

When I finally found out what was wrong and got the THR, I went back to him for PT. Between PT the summer before and after the THR, and discovering a mild heart condition during my post op testing (to go along with my mild case of diabetes), I knew I had to get serious about "maintenance" of my body if I wanted to stick around long term.

So, when PT done after first THR, I joined a gym and started working with a trainer. I also joint a group that goes out dancing to rehab the hip and get some fun exercise. I lost 20 pounds and got into OK shape. I tried to keep going as much as I could when the second hip started barking. At pre op for that hip, my doc made huge adjustments in Ned because of how well I'd done.

So, short story long, that's the reason I've pushed myself so hard after surgery. As long as it wasn't causing pain and setting me back, I'm determined to get back where I was as quickly as possible to not give back too much ground from a health standpoint.

Well you have certainly done a fine job @SaraK. I am fortunate that cholesterol, heart, etc. are fine. I have my joint issues and a variety of thyroid cancer, but other than that am healthy. I used lack of thyroid as reason for weight issues, but I have disproved that. I want to keep my mobility so rest of system stays good (nice being in 60s with no bp issues or meds except thyroid replacement and vitamins).

I have learned it is better to try to stay ahead of the problems if we can. Looking forward to getting both hips back to fully functional and actually be able to take care of flower beds this summer and complete some household projects.

@Layla - I draw the line at running! The only reason to run is if something is chasing you!

I agree. I haven't tried it. Don't plan too either.
I've read a few surprised themselves running to dodge rain. Old habits die hard.
I know some continue to run after replacement. Never been into running and I'm glad
because I'm sure I'd give it up, had I been into it. I want this replacement to last my lifetime :fingersx:
@SaraK

Really pleased for you @SaraK.
As for running that was the only thing my OS said I should never do! Such a relief a I hate running and yet have so many friends who love it :walking:

Wow, Sara...you are doing phenomenal! One of the reasons I want to get this surgery done is to start exercising again too. My thigh muscles have atrophied so since exercise now just makes it hurt worse. How can a person get in shape if pain is the end result of exercising? So discouraging. Hope I do as well as you post op.

@MammaT ....I'm with you I want to get back to tending my garden...go down and get back up!
