Hinged Joint Revision Complete, recovery continues

@71Beetle , here's the recipe I use.....

Individual Potato Gratins

4 to 6 servings

Ingredients

  • Vegetable spray
  • 2 large russet potatoes, roughly peeled and very thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup grated cheese or mix of cheeses (your choice)
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 3/4 cup heavy cream*
Directions

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Spray 8 muffin tins with vegetable spray (I use 3 ramekins-I think they're 12 or 16 oz each). Layer potato slices, cheese, and onions into each muffin cup. Season with salt and pepper (I season each potato layer very lightly) and top each gratin with 1 or 2 tablespoons of heavy cream. Cover with foil and bake for 30 to 40 minutes, removing the foil halfway through cooking time. (it may take longer than the time alloted-depending on the size of your ramekins, etc. I also turn the oven up to 450 after they're cooked through for 5 minutes or so to brown the tops a little more) Invert gratins onto plate and serve.

*I use half and half instead of cream-and it takes a little more than 2 tablespoons of it per ramekin.

@lovetocookandsew thank you so much. That would be so good with a roast chicken and some beans. I will have a go of it when I am up to it. Or maybe I will see if my husband wants to try it. I have taught him how to make a good number of meals as he does most of the cooking for the family. I work later than he does so he usually has dinner made as I come in. It is really nice.

The Potatoes gratins looks delicious! I like the individual sizes, more crunchiness.
I am sleeping a lot lately, nap after lunch, nap after dinner, and then ready for bed. Both naps had complete dream cycles. I wonder if I am making up for lost sleep?
Just am glad that I can sleep when I want.

I am so glad that you are sleeping when you want. When you sleep is were you heal. I do have to say that I haven't sleep as much with this hip as I did with the others which I find very interesting. Also this has healed faster. As they say every one is so different. Keep up the good work. Take care. Tashia

Sleep is a good thing. If your body's telling you to sleep, then you need it. I'm not a doctor, but I think sleep is a big part of healing. I am glad you can sleep all you need right now. I've noticed this month that sometimes I fall asleep and immediately have dreams too-normally I don't even know I'm dreaming. Must be part of the whole cycle. The individual gratins are crunchy on top, bottom and some on the sides, they are much better that way.

@Pumpkln Isn't sleep grand?! Happy that you are getting some. It is necessary for the body to heal.

I am sleeping more now as well. I am still on the couch but I will try the bed again tonight. Our bed is really high and it is too painful to get my leg up. I also don't want to keep my hubby up as he is up at 5:00 am every morning. He also snores which bugs me at the best of times. Who knows what I may do if I am weepy and tired and he is snoring. :)

Feeling discouraged this morning, woke up to sharp spasms over the outside of my knee, right over the joint line.
Have done some stretching and they seem to have settled down a little bit.
Getting frustrated as I seem to be getting no where, every day is like the movie Groundhog. Just wonder when I will get it right.
Thanks for listening sorry for the pity party :cheers2:

Sorry you are feeling this pain @Pumpkln. It is good that the stretching alleviated the pain a bit. Must have been the way you slept. The good thing is that you slept :)

@Pumpkln Sorry you are having a bad day. there is no need to apologise. Its very discouraging I know. You are just shy of the 5 week mark and this is the time when progress seems to slow down. Give it time, I know its hard, slowly slowly does it. Think about the summer and how much better you will be in another month.

Thank you for this.
I just need to take it easy and let my knee heal, these revisions are a challenge.
Busylizzie I am hoping yours will be as scheduled, and that it will be behind you soon.

Have been feeling a little nervous, there is a small fire west of us, blowing this way. They have a crew up there, hoping they get it under control. Being so limited you realize you can only take medications, ice machine, wedge, and walker if the fire gets out of control. Temperatures are cool, that is good for getting it under control.

I'm sorry you're having a rough day. This is the place to share that as we understand. Hopefully as the day has gone on the knee has loosened and feels better. Hoping the fire gets put out or is already put out and you don't have to leave. Keep up the good work.

Oh, I am so sorry that you are in that place and time of recovery. With the wind blowing it makes me nerves too. I don't have any fire near me but I still don't like it. I hope the fire is out and now you can rest. Today isn't my best day either but I think we should go and get a shake the internet way. Hee, hee, Take care and please rest. Take care of that kid. :snork: Tashia

Today was a better day, the fire is settling down. The weather has cooperated, the winds died down, and the humidity went up, it should be out tomorrow, and it just started sprinkling.:yes!:
I have been using a knee wedge to elevate, but since I have started moving around more, I was slipping down into full knee extension, which was irritating my knee. I put the wedge aside last night and elevated on a pillow, WOW, my knee felt a lot better this morning and the rest of the day. I will save the wedge for my brother to use when he has the screws removed from his ankle later this year.
Going to spend the rest of the evening :chillpill:,

I'm so glad the fire is under control and you're safe. Also glad you figured out a way to help your knee. I sleep with one pillow for support as I found myself too uncomfortable with stacked pillows and sleeping, but still use them stacked for elevating and icing. I've had a couple of lazy days-haven't slept well so don't feel like doing anything, plus my tummy is still working on getting all the way better. My peddle exerciser came today so maybe I'll try it tomorrow. I won't try to go all the way around for a while-just a little back and forth for a few minutes at a time at first. My kneecap and hamstring has been hurting more for some reason-likely part of the healing process. Take it easy-rest and ice. Kim

I am so glad that you are making great progress and that the fires did not reach you! Tomorrow, I go in to see the sports medicine therapist to get clearance to go back to training. I walked on the ellipitical today, but only for a 10 minute mile. I hope things are coming along for you my friend! :0)

@lovetocookandsew ,@RestAssured @71Beetle ,
Thanks for stopping by, still feeling better, we have rain today to take care of the fire :yay:, but at a small cost of a falling barometer , which my knee is not so happy about. Tomorrow it should clear and then everything will be right again!
Kim, again it sounds like our recoverys seem to be on a similar schedule, sharing the same surgery day and all that goes with this experience. Hope your tummy starts to settle down.

Hi Chris, I am thinking what you would say to me if I were where you are right now. For starters you would tell me not to get frustrated because its very early days. You would remind me that recovery doesn't happen in a straight line; that its a roller coaster and bad days are to be expected. I suspect you would also congratulate me on trying different things out to find what works. And lots more besides. So now you have to say all these things to yourself.

You have had a mountain to climb. IT WILL ALL BE WORTH IT. xx Carol.

Yes, @Pumpkln , we seem to be on the same path, although we've each taken a few different scenic byways......My peddler came yesterday-I tried it today. I can go back and forth but no way can I go all the way around yet so I guess that'll be my next goal. My knee seems to be more swollen these last few days and a bit more painful for some reason...sigh...I guess I've slacked off a bit in the icing and elevating area so back to the pillows and ice. My tummy is slowly getting better...the problem still remains the am-it takes hours for me to be able to eat food so I go without pain meds until then. Luckily the pain isn't terrible now-I don't like it but can bear it until I have food in me, then I start my day. It's a pain to do it this way but I have no choice for now. Sure brings back yucky memories of pregnancy morning sickness...lol. How's your stamina and strength @Pumpkln ? Mine sure isn't great, but I suspect the flu caused most of it, not the surgery alone. First day of outpatient PT is tomorrow-not looking forward to going up there in my current state but at least I made a late afternoon app't. No way I could do it in the am. But my OS app't next week (amazing-we're 6 weeks already by then!!!) is early am-it'll be very hard to get going and get there in time.
