TKR Post surgery - Finally!

Your body has been through a huge trauma with your surgery and it takes time to bounce back. All your body’s strength right now is going toward healing and it leaves very little for a lot of activity. Although it wouldn’t seem like it, a trip to the doctor’s office (or any errand out) can tire you out and make you light headed. Give yourself a few more weeks and this should pass. Just go with the messages your body sends you and don’t try to push too hard. It’s still very early days for you.

I suspect it will make a big difference for you to have your incision exposed to the air so it can heal properly. Fingers crossed for you!!!

The dehydration thought is a good one. You might want to try to drink Gatorade to help balance out your electrolytes. It certainly won't hurt you, and its getting more fluids into you.

Hopefully you've rested all afternoon and are feeling better.

Sorry you had that little episode at the OS's office. While dehydration is a good possibility, a sudden drop in BP can also happen if you stand too quickly from a sitting or lying position. It can also be a side effect of Opioids. Also, if you were feeling anxious or stressed about the appointment it could have triggered a drop in heart rate and BP. Thankfully you were in a safe place under a watchful eye when it happened and you're feeling better now.
I hope you had a good nap. :)

I was sitting when it happened. I definitely think dehydration and opioids are playing a part in this. I bet I'm not drinking enough water. Just had two big cups of tea this afternoon, so that should help! Thanks for being there for me everyone!!

Just a slight caution…..tea is not the best for helping with dehydration as any drink with caffeine causes you to pee more. A better bet is just plain old water or an electrolyte drink like Pedialyte or Gatorade. It also helps to eat watermelon. It’s a tasty way to increase water intake.

Good for you….decaf is definitely better.

Had PT today. I am scheduled to see the PT sometimes and the PTA sometimes. I have found I appreciate the PT, but the PTA is old school. She makes me feel bad about my ROM and tells me I need to do more at home, even though I am doing stretches and gentle exercises twice a day if I'm feeling good. The past two times I've seen her (including today), she's measured my flexion in the beginning of the session, right after I've warmed up on this pedal machine thing (don't know what it's called) and of course my flexion is worse than the previous session I had with the PT. The PT always measures me at the end of the session after we've done lots of stretching and bending and I told the PTA that. Today the PTA wanted to use some electrical thing to stimulate my quad since it isn't activated as much as we'd like. I told her to give me another week or so and that I'm not concerned since I know I'm making progress. Does anyone know what that machine would've been and should I consider doing this? She just made me nervous. Of course when she finally measured my flexion at the end of the session like the PT always does, my number increased from last time! My next session is Tuesday and I'm back again with the PT, which will be good since she doesn't push me, always gets results, and includes a wonderful massage at the end!

Since you are uncomfortable with the PTA and on good terms with the PT, tell the PT about your experience with the PTA next Tuesday and ask for other arrangements….either see the PT each visit (what I would recommend) or try another PTA. You have the right to request a change if you don’t “click” with any person you are seeing. Remember, these people are your employees…you’re paying them for their service. And, by the way, when you go for physical therapy, you are entitled to see a PT at each visit. PTs and PTAs have different levels of expertise and they are supposed to be billed to insurance and different rates. If you’re being forced to see a PTA, that person is only responsible for carrying out the treatment plan established by the PT and they should be billed at the lesser rate. You might want to check on that.

You are doing the right thing by going to therapy on the assigned days and then doing less on the “rest” days in between. Those gentle bends and stretching along with a little walking are all you need in these early days.

There are some risks with a muscle stimulator and, given that you don’t have confidence in this person, I would decline the use of it at this early point in your recovery. Unless it’s specifically listed in your treatment plan, she shouldn’t be making these recommendations without approval from the PT. It’s not going to hurt to not use it right now anyway. Your body is healing on its own schedule and it’s important to let it do its thing. Your quad strength and firing will return in time. Sometimes it’s just a little slower than everyone thinks it should be. As long as you feel you are making progress, you’re good. I’m glad to see you were assertive about that and doing what you feel is best for yourself. You get the BoneSmartie Gold Star of the Day!

Hi BarabooProud,
Your situation is unfortunate, but it happens. While it may feel uncomfortable, I agree that you should speak directly with the PT by telling her you appreciate the work you've been doing together and you feel like you're making good progress with her approach, then asking if it's possible to schedule only with her moving forward. This way you won't need to criticize the PTA. Or you could talk to the scheduler telling them you prefer to schedule only with the PT going forward, if possible. They may not even question you, but if they do you can say that you feel you respond better to the PT's style of treatment.
I hope you have a wonderful holiday weekend!

I’m happy that worked for you. I hope you were able to explain why to them. That feedback is something they need because if that assistant is doing it to you, she’s probably acting the same with all her clients.

Hi BarabooProud,
How has recovery been for you over the past week? Hopefully your back with the PT you like and your sessions are going smoothly. You're one month post op (to date) tomorrow so wishing you a Happy One Month Anniversary! Have a great Sunday!

Hi Layla,

Recovery has been going well lately! I'm over 4 weeks post op and my pain is much better, I have more energy, and am able to do so much more. I still get tired out and rest a LOT, but I'm still very early in recovery! PT is going well. Working on my flexion, but I reached 105 the other day with the physical therapist pushing my leg with my permission and 102 by myself. Baby steps, but progress nonetheless.

Thanks for the update.
You're doing great! I worry hearing the PT pushed on your knee, even with your permission.
I trust that you will scream and bite, if she pushes too hard and hurts you, lol.

Kidding aside, keep in mind that steady progress is best, not forcing gains too quickly.
Keep on keeping on, you're doing it! :thumb:

Oh we definitely have an agreement that she stops immediately if I say so. I will not let her hurt me, nor does she want to. Thanks!
