PKR Patella femoral replacement fails after 1 year

I was wondering if there are any other members who have gone through BTKR at 47 as I see the members who are in their late 50s and 60s.

THANK YOU @Jockette I needed that hug trust me . You are pretty lucky as you are a lot older than me which is what surgeons usually recommend to hold out as long as you can. Replacing only the damaged part has a lot of advantages pertaining to the function of the knee as you are keeping everything else. If the surgeon is careful during the surgery and is accurate when positioning the implant because it is a crucial part for the outcome of a successful surgery.. You should be fine . I have read a lot of successful stories on PFJRS and had I known better I would've had robotic surgery. Keep me posted and let me know about your continued recovery. God Bless:egypdance:

You could try googling "40-50 year olds bilateral tkr Bonesmart" and see what comes up. In the past months I googled whatever my question and always added Bonesmart at the end and it worked well.

Well 47 is not that far off of 50. Joint replacement has no age discrimination. We have teenagers who needed these procedures.

Spend some time in the recovery forum. Look for the green Bilateral TKR title in front of the thread title. Chat with those members. I'm sure they will give you good information. One of our newest members of staff has had BTKR. I'll tag her for you @SusieShoes .

And I submit that 47 is not all that far off from 64. :) :-) (: Age is only a number when it comes to the knee joint. An older knee is not a better candidate for replacement than a younger, or vice versa. The reason doctors used to hesitate to operate on younger patients was because it was thought the implants of that era would only last so many years. As thing turned out, implants lasted longer than they thought. My OS said he didn't know how long my implant would last, but he reckoned I was good for 30+ years - less if I became an NFL running back or took up running marathons. :snork:

Lots of people younger than 50, or even 30, get their knees replaced. If a replacement is needed to give them a working knee joint, then a replacement is what they must get. Doctors are often conservative with younger patients and will wait until the need to perform a total replacement becomes overwhelming.

Having both my knees replaced has changed my life... and I'm just four months post-surgery. So if I come off a bit like a cheerleader at times, it's because I'm thrilled with how my knees turned out.

If you're interested in my recovery, here is my recovery thread.

I'm also happy to answer (if I can) any questions you might have.

@Jockette I agree 47 is not way off from 50 but it is from 64 thats for sure. I'm trying to look to see if I can find any if you come across some can you let me know.

I'm 44 and I had both knees replaced this year. My surgeon originally told me to wait when he first dx'd me with the bone on bone OA. But I pushed for an MRI bc my running injury wasn't healing like I wanted and once he saw how misaligned my patella was on the MRI, he chgd his tune about waiting. My right wasn't nearky as bad as the left, but I went ahead and had both done so I could take one long absence from work and pay one out of pocket max. I'm finally moving from the recovery to the rebuilding stage and feel like I will get back my athletic pursuits. I walked a mile twice this week! So no, life won't end with fake knees in your 40s. I am so looking forward to life on my new knees.

Hang in there. Keep getting opinions.

The hardest part of being younger and having TKR in my opinion is that I still have young kids at home, so having mamma out of commission for so long was hard. And as my fellow bonesmarties can attest, I probably pushed myself too quickly in some areas to keep up with kid activities (driving, special olympics, graduation stuff, etc). But they all learned to be more helpful than they were around the house, so there's that.

So after visiting with about 8 surgeons I finally found out what the problem with my knees are. I have been told that my tibia tubercles are out of alignment 20mm right left 19mm and that I could have a TTO but they don't recommend it because of the recovery.

So they would rather do TKR but I don't have significant Tri compartmental arthritis at all. Actually my femoro-tibial joint space is excellent. They also said this is something that should have been addressed before I even had my partial knee replacements. One doctor suggested Lateral faciectomy but this is not going to address the underlying problem and will create more instability.

Has anyone had a TTO after a partial knee replacement. Wouldn't I need to address this anyways with a TKR as my alignment would still be the same? This is not an age or arthritis issue.

As a fitness competitor what do you think about that. I've been into fitness most of my life.

Hello,

I am wondering what has happened since the last post on this thread?
I am in a similar situation....

I have two patellofemoral knee replacements. Right in Dec 15 and left in June 16 with left hip surgery in between. As a keen exercise enthusiast at 49 I now feel it's all over. The pain is just becoming too much particularly the left knee. There was talk of a TTO being done on the left initially, but now it's just said it's painful because the hip needs replacing not convinced. What does the pain in your knee feel like - exactly??

The pain is like crunchy , grinding, pain. Since my kneecaps are subluxed, the plastic is wearing down and my bone is grinding on the metal component.

Hi, @surgchic17 , my Patellofemoral is going downhill, actually, it’s never been all that great to start with. I am about ready to schedule that second opinion. It’s been 14 months.

14 months is way too long to have waited. I waited longer because my surgeon didn't care enough to help me. She left me in this condition for over a year and counting. That opinion I got 10 opinions and they all said well look at them, they speak for themselves

I feel your pain and it's been a nightmare that I can't seem to wake up from. Complete failed surgical technique.

Do you have revision surgery scheduled?
