Bilateral PKR Pain After 1 Year

Thanks for the replies. I told the PT they were causing pain and I wouldn't do them. But I wouldn't have had the courage without this forum. Thank you SO much.

One more question - today I am officially 5 weeks post op. On Friday the PT started me on wall slides - 3 sets of 10. I feel it is way too soon for this type of exercise. What do you all think? Had anyone else been asked to do this at 5 weeks?

I was never given that exercise but they are basically a squat and squats are not good for a 5 week old knee.

As always, if you are uncomfortable with any aspect of PT, you don’t have to do it. PT can be helpful, if it is the right PT. PT is an option, not the requirement we are led to believe.

@halesgirl, I’ll echo @Jockette. I did those exercises in my pt sessions the last week or two (between weeks 5 & 7). However, I felt relatively comfortable doing them. I did not squat down so far that it stressed my knee, but just enough to force solid engagement of the quad muscles. The critical question is “what are YOU comfortable doing?” It doesn’t matter what the exercise or stretch is, if it causes you pain at a level you don’t like, don’t do it.

That is truly my new mantra!!!! Lol. I was excercising at home yesterday and the right knee was really barking. So I just stopped, grabbed my ice packs and laid down with the knees elevated. Knee feels much better today so clearly your way of doing things works. Thanks so much for all the advice. I have a friend having a TKR today -as an outpatient!!!! - and I have already referred her to this site for when she gets home.

More and more of these are done as out patient now. Tell her to make sure she has a way to contact someone if her pain control isn't working.

Great for suggesting she come to Bonesmart. She can go ahead and set up an account so she'll have us when she needs us.

I hope my next one is outpatient, less time to hassle with PTs!

The idea of outpatient scares me!!!!
It scares me, too, but bad PTs scare me even more!

I was only in the hospital one night, and I will admit I had a minor problem. Minor because I was in the hospital and they knew what to do to fix it. Due to the anesthesia I could hardly pass any urine after surgery and by 4 am the next morning I was quite bloated. They put a catheter in just long enough to drain my bladder and that fixed it and I didn’t need it again. That could have become a big problem if I’d been discharged the day of my surgery and been home with no ready fix.

I had issues as well. Apparently my blood pressure was too low and the first time they got me to stand I fainted. I can't help but think how awful that would have been had I been at home. I ended up staying in hospital for 4 days because as well as the low blood pressure they discovered I was anemic. After doing both knees at once and so much blood loss they were considering giving me a transfusion. Thankfully it didn't come to that.

So yesterday was 7 weeks since surgery. Thought I was doing really well so I went to Target today. By the time I was done shopping my right knee was swollen to twice it's size and SO painful. I've been icing and elevating since this afternoon and still in pain. Even after 2 Tramadol. Is this normal at this stage? And is it normal for one knee to be healing so beautifully and pain free and the other to hurt so much?

FYI - The pain starts on the right side of my knee and radiates down into my lower leg. Unfortunately I don't have anything stronger than Tramadol to take for it and it's not working!

I only had one done, but I know that other members who have had two done say that they can be very different, even if done the same day. Your right knee may have been in worse shape and therefore had more work done on it so it’s more upset.

Any knee can still get upset with shopping at 7 weeks.

How long were you shopping?

Probably about an 1.5 hours. After sitting at my desk for 4 hours (though I did take a couple breaks).

Oh, that’s way too much, no wonder your knee is so upset. It’s also a wonder the left is not! :console2:

7 weeks is still really early. A desk job seems like it wouldn’t stress the knee, but this early it does. I could not sit for 4 hours with my feet on the floor for months.

I couldn’t walk around Target for an hour and a half either at that stage.

I guess I keep thinking I'm further along than I am - and now I'm paying the price! Looks like it's going to be a long painful night.

It does get better. It just takes way longer than we want. :bored:
