TKR Pain 2 years after TKR

Can i get a bit of your husbands to inject into mine..

Well today hasn't been good. Don't know whether I am coming or going. Totally disorientated. I need help and advice please.

Started to feel very sick this afternoon. Couldn't get food down. Came to bed at 4pm and I am still here. Was so not well I phoned the hospital. She says probably the morphine but they are concerned I haven't had bowel movement since Tuesday despite medication. Seems nausea is a side effect of this.

Now she told me I still had to take the morphine and paracetamol as prescribed and the oral morph during the night. Plus take the senna they gave me. Wants me to phone doctor in morning to ask them to come out to me. Can't really put up with this nausea though so what do i do?

Trying to get some toast down but it's not working.

Now knee wise. I can't get it to bend at all. Can't to the leg raises hospital told me to do. Can't for the life of me lift my leg off the bed. It's a ton weight. It's this normal? I managed the day after operation but by the next day not a hope. What do i do?

I have re read all the post op posts.

Starting to struggle again to type up this and stay awake. Worried is this is normal?

Sorry for long post but must finish as not making sense again

I had nausea and poor appetite after surgery. I got nausea medication from the doctor( zofran). Constipation is also common, there are article on BoneSmart that address that problem. You will get through this journey!

Morphine can definitely cause nausea. It's also the cause of your constipation.
Can you phone your GP and explain, and ask for some anti-nausea medication and an aperient?
Maybe he/she could also prescribe an alternative pain reliever to morphine.
It's rotten when you feel sick all the time.

Even if you can't eat much, do try to drink plenty of fluids.

Don't worry about your leg being stiffer, more swollen and un co-operative right now. It's probably the result of coming home and being a bit more active than you were in hospital. That happens quite often.

I couldn’t lift my leg by myself for a couple of weeks. Don’t worry. It will come back.

Do they have Miralax in Scotland? It helped me when I hadn’t gone for about a week. You should also drink plenty of water. I found it worked to have a basket with my essentials (bottled water, meds, tissues, phone, glasses etc.) that could move with me when I went to bed and then back to the chair. Are you elevating while sleeping? That helped the swelling in my leg.

My leg felt like a dead tree stump for what seemed like weeks afterwards. It was probably only for a week or so but it was a little scary especially since it was working much better in the hospital. Elevate and ice is the best thing you can do for that. Medication makes me sick too and sometimes the only thing I could keep down was ginger ale or a Coke - the real stuff - not diet or zero or whatever.

As I've gotten older, I can't handle a lot of emotional stress; could that be true for you now too? Your body has had something of a trauma and on top of that, you're worried about your grandson. The combination of those two things might be making things worse for you...not sure if anything can be done about the stress but it might be worth mentioning to the doctor?

Thanks folks. Still feeling very nauseous this morning. Tried to eat weetabix but just couldn't get it down. I am normally a diet Pepsi addict and can't even gave that right now. Plain water is all that is going down.
Knee pain isn't too bad as long as I keep on top of medication so even though they are making me nauseous and disoriented I will keep taking them. Can't believe how spaced out I feel. Typing mails is very hard as the brain won't function.

Bruising has come out. It's rather a mess. .

Just want to sleep really.

Just rest for now and ride this out your way. The meds make a mess out of most of us, sadly. You still need them for now but soon you won’t and then you can cut back and see about regaining your appetite.

The bruising looks awful but it will go away and soon be just a memory. Sleep will do you so much good you might as well nap most of the day. Hang in there!

The meds gave me a terribly loopy feeling, but it was only for the first few weeks. If you’re still nauseous the dr should be able to prescribe some anti nausea medication. I like Diet Pepsi too, but couldn’t drink it for a month or so after surgery, it tasted bad. Water is better anyway.

I had issues with morphine in the hospital. For knee #1 they gave me anti nausea medication and after the first couple of days switched me to percocet. For knee #2 after the first  they switched me right to the percocet. It worked for me, though I did always take it with a couple of crackers or something. Made me nap a lot, but that was ok in the first couple of weeks since you should be resting anyway. :) :-) (:

Do what you can to keep your fluids up. Ice chips and flat 7Up was what my mom would give us when we had stomach issues. Weatabix sounds a bit intense for right now--but good for when your stomach settles. Maybe a little dry toast?

You might try a little regular (not diet) Pepsi (a bit flat) if you really want the Pepsi.

Molly - did you contact your GP and get something to stop the nausea? If you haven't done so already, do it now. There's no need to keep on feeling sick.

Celle I tried calling today and they were to call me back but didn't. I need to call them in the morning again. I am sure they can give me something else. Not been able to eat today. Managed a yoghurt earlier and a small cheese sandwich about an hour ago. Normally I love my food so this is strange.
Still took the morphine tonight as pain starting up and don't want to get to a stage its out of control. Got a headache too now.
Feel like I have been very lazy today. Keep falling asleep. Again falling asleep while typing this. Haven't done much walking at all and haven't done the excercises I was meant to do. Knee feels very stiff. What are the problems I am making for myself if I don't get up and walk and exercise?

After not eating for so long, you are bound to be tired and sleepy. Can you drink protein drinks? They might help with your nausea. I had it, too, and found that motion-sickness pills helped a lot for me. You can pick generic ones up just about everywhere.

Mollymax, have you been drinking lots of fluids? I've been unwell after major surgery (not TKR. yet) with nausea, pain and fatigue to the point of just lying there kind of out of it. Dehydration can really exacerbate all that. Even if you can only choke down ginger ale or Gatorade.

I really hope you can get it all figured out and settle in to your recovery. This is hard enough to recover from without all the side effects and I hope you can find the correct type and dose of anti-nausea meds for your body. They've had problems in the past finding the right combo for me, but they figured it out and mostly managed to control it and/or keep it to a minimum. If you can get the anti-nausea meds figured out, then you can keep the pain meds down and that'll go a long way towards helping you settle in and feel better. I'm really sorry you have to go through all this.

Another thing that could be causing your nausea, Molly, is taking your medications on an empty stomach. I know it's hard at the moment, but if you could manage just a bite or two of something like a savoury biscuit, it might help.

All I did was lay around, ice, elevate, binge watch TV and repeat. I did drink lots of water. I also could not lift my own leg for at least a week, maybe more and the leg raises were impossible for several weeks. When you are living it, it seems that it will never change, that it will always be this way but then one day you notice you picked up your own leg for something. Then you see that small improvements do happen. Hope you are feeling better.
