TKR Pain 2 years after TKR

It does hurt at first when you stand on the new knee. That pain will go away as the knee heals, so hang in there like everyone is saying.

It’s too bad your blood pressure continues to be a problem. Getting up to use the toilet is both an affirmation of dignity and good exercise. Your leg will feel a bit like a dead weight for a while. It’s swollen and you’re on some powerful meds. Your hospital staff will get you through this rough patch!

@Mollymax So good to hear you were able to walk some. Hopefully the other problems will settle in and you can walk a bit more. I abhor bedpans and commodes, so being in a regular room with a toilet, sink and shower again is wonderful. I agree with @SusieShoes about the dignity of a toilet; after I fell I wasn't allowed to even wipe myself the rest of the time in ICU (TMI?) lest I fall again. Keep up the good spirits!

Thank you. Have got a bag of ice on knee but not sure how long I should be icing it for at a tme? Any help appreciated. Been trying to also use it on my thigh to ease the pain. Is this right?

Usually we place the ice atop and/or underneath the knee itself. Is your thigh hurting more than your knee? If so it may be from a tourniquet. Perhaps you should ask for more ice so you can use it on both the knee and the thigh.

I requested and got a bedside potty chair really close to the bed. I was able to use using my arms to scoot onto it.
I have a really quick bladder and with all those fluids needed a bedpan about every 30 minutes. The chair was a wonderful addition to my room! You might ask for one.

Yes thigh is bad tonight. I didn't get a tourniquet due to my lymphodema. Leg is pretty swollen. Pain tonight is bad. Just had meds. Had tried to do without for the liquid morphine that I can take every hour. Didn't take it for 3 hrs. Big mistake as major pain right now. It isn't helping that I haven't slept for 3 nights so tiredness causing me to be weepy i think. Knee pain kicking in too. Think I will go try sleep and see if that helps me. I am a bad sleeper at best of times.

Managed to get just under 3hrs sleep there when the need for the toilet woke me then they took my BP. Oops 90/53. Back on iv fluids but this time a slow drip over 7 hrs. Pain mega but not enough to reduce me to tears but enough to stop me moving it in bed. Can barely string a sentance together and could not hold telephone conversion with hubby. As it's only 2.19am I will try get some more sleep if the pain let's me

OK so it's now 3.45amand I am reduced to tears. Rocking back and forward in agony. Good thing is I got to walk to toilet with the walking frame to see if it would help a bit Mind you trailing drip along too. Told I shouldn't have waited 2hrs before asking for more pain relief and to ask every hour when it is as bad as this. Nurse brought me a bag of ice too. So let's hope it all eases the pain off a bit. Getting to the unbearable stage now.

I am so sorry you are having such a rough time. I pray you get the pain under control.

Fortunately BP came up during the day so no more fluids at the moment. Managed to shower which was good. Getting back and forward OK. Physio came and changed the walker to crutches as said I was managing OK. Couldn't do the exercises as leg very swollen now. Been icing it all day. Pain not been too bad but thigh pain still a bit bad. Hopefully I will get a bit more sleep tonight.

Good to hear you're doing well. I also had a shower and a hair wash this am. My poor hair was a knotted tangled mess and the curls were total frizz. It took a while to get it tamed for the shower. It was a sit-down shower in my hospital room bathroom as they prefer I don't fall again, but the nurse did a great job on me. I hope you get some restful sleep. I still need a walker as the PT said I'm not good with crutches-which I already knew, so I'm glad you can use them.

Please don't let your pain get as bad as this. When you're in pain, ring for medications. If the pain gets ahead of you, as it did this time, it takes longer for the pan medications to catch up and playing catch-up is never fun.

They told you right - don't let the pain get that bad again. I'm glad the nurses brought you more ice.

Couldn't do the exercises as leg very swollen now. Been icing it all day.
Don't worry about that. It's normal. You'll be able to do more as your pain and swelling settle down a bit. Just make sure you do your ankle pumps.

I used to set my alarm to go off every 2 or 4 hours, or whatever the life of the pain med was at the time. That way I was medicated before the pain got so bad I was in agony thus was able to stay ahead of it (not including the reactions I had to the meds). My insurance even has a pain med app for that purpose.

This is a very bad night. The pain is a real stinging pain on operation site. Thigh is agony and leg is so very swollen and burning hot. To top it all my other knee is agony and weight bearing is bad. It 3am and I haven't slept.
OK so there is another reason for the no sleep which I would like to tell you about if that's OK. Sitting here in a hospital bed in agony, feeling useless right now. My 10 month old grandson was brought in to A&E just after midnight. Projectile vomiting. By 2am he was being transferred to Edinburgh sick children's hospital. My daughters phone is very low on charge so can't keep in touch a lot. So I am waiting anxiously on news. Meanwhile requesting meds every hour but they aren't killing the pain. Also 3 fingers of my right hand have been numb since around midnight. Strange feeling.
Sorry for long post folks. So very worried right now.

I am hoping and praying things get better and your precious grandson feels better soon. Tell the nurses about your pain and let them work on it with your doctor(s). You will have some pain, but it should be minor, not massive.

I have spoken with the nurse on night . She says I will be feeling the pain so much worse tonight due to the worry about my grandson. They have said they will keep on top of it as best they can for it meanwhile with the hourly meds and the ice. She very nicely brought me a cup of tea and biscuit 10 mins ago.

Don't you just love great nurses? Mine kept bringing my hubby coffee, snacks, etc. One of them even made him a warm chocolate chip cookie and vanilla ice cream conglomeration that he loved. It's wonderful to have nurses that really love to help.
