Welcome to Bonesmart! I love your username :) Congrats on the new knee!

Patricia, I would suggest you contact your GP and discuss your post op meds. He/she will have your post op letter from the surgeon and is best placed to prescribed the appropriate pain med given your medical history.

Take care :)

Hi there.
Welcome. I'm very impressed you can do stairs at all! Sleep is an elusive creature after this surgery. Once you get your meds sorted out, and as time passes, your pain should start to decrease. Go easy at physio, and good luck on this journey.

what a lovely soud my husband downstairs making tea and toast and more importantly getting me ICE. Another broken nights sleep but certainly not as painful now. Last of my blood thinning tablets today. I was so pleased i didnt have to inject myself. Taking a tablet is so much easier. Guess i shoud change my thread title but not sure how to do it. Two weeks tomorrow since op and getting there with help and advice from this site. Thanks:angel:

Patricia,
The moderators are the only ones that can change you title for you. Just tag one of them and they will be glad to do that.

Thank you everyone for your comments and advice. Things seem to be done so differently here in the UK. No one has ever mentioned elevating the knee. I was told NEVER use pillows under your knee whilst in bed and only one pillow was advised when sitting in a chair on top of a small stool. As for icing i was told no longer than 20 mins ever and wait 2 hours before you start again. The only relief i have had is from lots and lots of icing and elevation so i am so glad i found this site. The swelling is going down well and the pain getting more managable. Of course i havent started physio yet. That begins wednesday. Im not sure how to tag a moderator to change the title of my thread if anyone can help. Thanks.

Hi Robynhood,

Glad you are getting some relief with icing and elevating. It really does work!

The way to tag someone is put the @ sign in front of their name and it will tag them: Jamie, skigirl

Let them know what you want your title to be and they can help.

Wishing you all the best,

Dawn

skigirl could you please change my thread title to onwards and upwards my journey continues. thanks.

Robyhood, Patrica, Hi! Sounds like you are doing well, I have found this site to be a blessing in many ways. Everyone in here has great advice and I for one have listen to them. Going up and down stairs what an accomplishment! I'm not sure I can do that. I walk everyday, do my exercises twice a day, and stationery bike three times a day but for only five minutes or until the knee says stop! I listen to my knee! I hope everything keeps going well for you! Just my two cents!

nice to hear from you. I had no option with the stairs really. On the 3rd day after op you are discharged from hospital and they show you how to climb five stairs and come down them and thats your lot. As we dont have a downstairs bathroom and i didnt want to stay upstairs i just got on with it. Its very scary the first couple of days tho. Im taking it very easy like you with the exercises. Keep in touch and let me know your progress redbird. take care

Yep, Jo got to it first. We just had the computer tech in house--it took $178 to buy a new Apple airport and$200 and four hours to install the new router!! My husband thought I should have bought a new computer--but I pointed out that he still would need wireless!!

I can do most things on the computer, but routers are beyond me skill!!!

O I leave anything technical to my teenage daughters. They sort everything out.

Congrats on the new knee. I'm glad you're finding the icing and elevating helpful.

Hey there Robynhood...I'd like to add my congrats on your new knee. I think you will find this site so very helpful as I have.
Everyone here are just like family. They help you in any way they can and know what you're going through and gonna go through. Don't be afraid to ask anything that concerns you. Please keep us posted on your progress. We do care! Hugs!!

Firstly can i aologise for being such a WIMP but I am in such a tizz. Ive mentioned before how squeamish i am and dreading the dressing coming off. Well tomorrows the day and Im making myself sick thinking about it. I TKR is my first op and i just cant imagine the scar and how im going to cope with it. Stupid i know. Ive tried looking at the pictures on here at the scars to prepare me but couldnt open my eyes. (Really!) I dont know if i will be able to cope with the exercises etc without hurting my knee. Even as im writing this i can see how stupid it is but I am so so squeamish. I didnt look when they changed it in hosp or when they took the staples out. Please can anyone reassure me it will be ok.

It will be okay! I didn't look at it in the hospital either, so when I did look when the staples came out, I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, it will be a long incision, and it will be puffy and a bit wrinkly-looking as a result, but I doubt it will be as bad as you imagine. There will be scabs, but you've had scabs before, right? If it's too much for you, you can buy some dressing-type bandages and keep it covered until you are ready. I kept it covered a bit longer because having the dressing on there gave me a sense of security somehow.

The exercises are going to hurt. But listen to the advice everyone gives and gets about not letting yourself be pushed to the point of tears. It is really really important to take your pain meds so you are ahead of the pain, not catching up. Take them about an hour before physio.
and rest, ice elevate.

It's a long road, and won't always be easy, but you can do it! :console2:

(Before I had my surgery I watched several videos of how it's done. I'm guessing you didn't. )

Thank you for your support. O go no i didnt watch any videos. Ive had six kids and cant watch a baby being born. Silly isnt it. I think i will do as you said. Take the waterproof dressing off and maybe put a bandage type dressing on until im more ready. Im guessing it wont hinder the healing process too much. Maybe a couple of days and i will be ready.:thankyou:

Moaning definitely helps!!!! Ask your GP's advicea bout pain control rather than doing your own thing, but definitely get something that works for you, you can't start a proper recovery without pain control meds.
