TKR On the other side of finally!

My husband drove me to BJ'S today it was my first time shopping since my surgery six weeks ago. I used my cane but I felt great no problem I put the cane in the cart and walk around and shopped.
The only thing I can say is I was very tired when I got home but it was worth it.
These little forays into the real world is what it is all about---normalcy. You are slowly returning to a lifestyle that is normal ans pain-free---and the view is wonderful! It is giving you a small, but delicious taste of what is to come.

I felt very much the same way after my first trip out---exhausted---but that will slowly go away.

Great update! I am at 4 weeks and loved to hear yours too!

I think it's important for readers if happy, good reports are posted too. While I see this forum as mainly support for those with issues/serious questions, it is read by many others too and we all like to see that it can work out well with only small issues - especially great to be able to see others had most of the same things and you are normal and not in trouble!

Hope 7 weeks is even better!

This forum is for everyone having knee replacements, not just for those having problems.
We like to hear the good as well as the bad.

I only meant is has a higher percentage of people with issues but is very important for people to see the positive stories like linney's

We do get people who come here because they have a problem and they are looking for help. They tend to stay until their problem is resolved. People who have an uncomplicated recovery tend to go back to their normal lives and, consequently, move on, away from BoneSmart. That's a healthy thing to do.

However, as you've noted, @charmed-life , this does tend to give greater than normal emphasis to the problems. That's why we love to hear stories of good progress and good recoveries.

I have made good progress after all my knee replacements and I stayed on BoneSmart to tell my stories of normal recovery.

I have been reading stories on bonesmart the good and bad months before my surgery the successful stories gave me the encouragement to have my TKR I went into the hospital very calm very ready with everything set up at home for my recovery that was a big help.
I read and prepared Ice, elevate and keep ahead of pain.
Before I new it the time started flying it is 6 + weeks.

I agree, getting my knee done was the best decision ever!! I am having the most wonderful recovery. I went for my first outside PT session yesterday and the PT could not believe how well I was doing for 4 1/2 weeks out. She watched me walk and started to laugh, "I've never seen anyone walking so well after such a short time" My excercises went great, I was sore when I came home but I just iced and elevated and today I am fine. Don't get frustrated with your recovery, some are faster than others, BUT it is so worth it in the end.

I haven't drove yet almost 7 weeks and I had my right knee done. I am not on pain meds but I am nervous about driving. I'm not sure when to get behind the wheel. I guess if I can pick my leg up with out pain I can try.
When did RTKR people start driving?

I was about 8 weeks I think (I had some other health problems going on). The best thing to do is go to a deserted parking lot or road and practice! Be sure you can slam on the brakes easily - that is the hard part and the most crucial part. Has your OS told you that you could drive? I waited until mine told me I could.

My surgeon informed me that I am not aloud to drive for 2 months because I am considered impaired (RTKR). The biggest concern is the strength and time of reaction to slam the break.
In my case, I don't have a choice because if I were to get into an accident before being cleared by the surgeon than I could be charged and my insurance would not cover me.
I recommend you ask your surgeon or confirm with your driver's licence bureau about any laws with this regard in your area.

I'm glad you are posting how well you are doing. There really should be a balance for those of us with continuing problems. It gives me hope too that I too will eventually get better.

I saw the NP two weeks ago I didn't ask I knew I was not ready at that time. She told me to make an appointment with OS in 6 months. I will be ready by then I will call the office to find out if I need a release from my OS
My PT ask me if my OS gave me the OK to drive. I think it is still to early for me.

It was 12 weeks when I started to drive my automatic car, that's when I got my confidence back. I had to push my chair back to get in & then push forward again to get comfy. The movement from gas to brake was hard at first, but good exercise.

My PT feels that laying on your back and sliding your heel toward your butt gives you the best ROM but I get the best by sitting on a chair and sliding my heel back with the help of my other leg.
Any thoughts?

It seems to me that both accomplish about the same thing. My PT had me do the heel slides with a strap or towel under my foot so I could "pull" it slightly more, when I was ready. Sitting on the chair will get you so far - perhaps 100-110 degrees; when you perfect that and want to try for a bit more ROM, try laying down for the heel slides since you get a more acute angle.

June 30th it will be 5 months since my surgery. I can say at this point I have had no complaints, I went back to the gym at the end of March and started driving about the same time, it was my tight knee so I was a little nervous but I had no problem. The only pain once in a while is in the back of my knee on the outside.
I recommend having TKR done yo everyone I t as lk to, it was the best thing I did. To be able to walk normal again without having to bow my knee has been fantastic.
Going to see my surgeon in Aug. for a follow up I have seen the NP and had XRAYS two months after surgery everything looked good then, hopefully it will be the same when I see him.

So great to hear how positive you feel about your outcome and progress! Another satisfied customer!...

Outstanding @linney619 ! You are all set to walk the beach:) I am so happy it is all going well.
