TKR On the other side of finally!

I'm 5 weeks post op and I'm getting a pain in my ligament in the right outside of my TKR. I think when I put on a sock, shoe etc if I twist the leg at all I get get a sharp pain then it gets sore.
I had an xray at follow up yesterday and everything looked good. I'm going to PT today I will ask maybe I need exercise to loosen up.
Has anyone gone through this type of pain, my knee feel good just back of knee hurts.

It may or may not be the ligament---it may actually be the lower part of the IT band.

Have you iced it directly? I would try an ice massage---fill Dixie cups full of water, freeze them, and then apply the ice directly on the area. As the ice melts, peel the paper away.

I merged your two threads as per forum protocol---we really only prefer one recovery thread per member, as it makes it much, much easier to access where you have been, what has been going on, and what new issues or concerns that you may be having if we do not have to jump from one thread to another.

It is more effective, and more efficient so that we can get you the advice you need---and it also prevents double posts.

Thanks,

Tim C.

I had something similar on the inside of my left knee. It was tight and painful. The Physio said it was the ligament which was too short now that my leg had been straightened. She got rid of it with lots of massage. I never feel it now, and haven't for a long time. Could you get your Physio to try massage?

I had IT band problems, still having sports massage which is helping. My discomfort went from thigh to the knee, thought l had hip problems! Hope you get sorted soon.

I am icing it right now, @ PT she told me to ice it when I got home.
I was so discouraged because it was my first out PT session and I was in such pain at times. I wanted to do better. I go Back in a week I should be feeling better then.

I thought about using the same thread but I didn't know if it would get read right away, now I know

The pain is behind the knee on the outside band. If I turn my foot the wrong way to put on a sock or shoe it hurts this morning I really did it to myself. I just need to ice and rest it. hopefully.

and I will add that PT should not hurt. Let your pt know when you are hurting and ask for an alternative exercise. Mine always has several ways of doing the same thing---so should your PT. Most of all, do not let him push on the knee to get more Rom---that is counterproductive, will result in more swelling--and LESS rom.

Hi Linney619,
I have that lateral pain too. My PT feels that it is Ilio-tibial band syndrome. Some things that have helped me are a message that my pt does on the band and at the lateral side of my knee, and some stretches he has given me. I still get that pain putting on and taking off my shoes, but it is much better. I also have a dickens of a time getting out of the drivers seat of my car. I use my full repertoire of swear words for that. Ice behind my knee and hip also seems to help quite a bit.

Then don't twist the leg. :snork:
Seriously though, the soft tissues are very sensitive for a while to certain motions. They were for me. You may need to be a bit careful and focus some ice on the area.

I hear ya, I iced and messaged the area and it feel much better today. I'm being careful getting dressed putting on socks and shoes are a challenge for me right now.

My husband drove me to BJ'S today it was my first time shopping since my surgery six weeks ago. I used my cane but I felt great no problem I put the cane in the cart and walk around and shopped.
The only thing I can say is I was very tired when I got home but it was worth it.
I have a month of PT ahead twice a week so I should be walking on my own without cane soon.

Hi @linney619 - just found your thread. Sounds like your recovery is really going quite well, despite your concerns about being tired and the pain on the outside of your knee. Do give yourself permission to be tired - so very normal, given the major construction job done on your knee! One day you will simply realize you feel so much better. I too had a lot of IT band issues on both legs following my replacements. I had developed a severe valgus (knees bending toward each other and feet further out), which effectively allowed the IT bands to "shorten." When my legs were straightened out with the replacements, that put a lot of stretch onto the bands and other muscles and tendons on the outside. Extremely painful. Ice, elevation, and lots of massage helped enormously. Rolling a tennis ball in the area or a rolling pin helped a great deal.

Wishing you a continued great recovery.

my outside PT starts tomorrow, I am really excited to go and alittle nervous too. I will report back how it turns out when I get home. It does mean things are moving forward in the right direction and that makes me feel good. Also I see my surgeon next Tuesday for my X-Ray and hopefully final clearance.

Good luck. Just remember, if it hurts - stop. If your PT insists on pushing too far, get a new PT.

Sounds like the shopping trip went well. Haven't been to BJ's in years:) once I got mobile after my TKR I would go to the local store and walk the rows holding on to the shopping cart. Would heel to toe all the aisles ...I have been shopping in this store for 20 years and pretty much know everyone so they didn't think I was crazy going 2 or 3 times a week:)

6 weeks post things are getting better, I not using the cane at home still take it when I go into a store. The ligament or IT band whatever I pulled out has been much better I have to be careful lifting my leg up or putting on socks, shoes. but all is good at this stage.
I had one PT appointment this week and they called to cancel ( secretly I was happy) I do exercises at home everyday anyway. For the next month I will be going twice a week. If she is there!!!
I'm in N.E the weather has been great so I can get out more often without worry about slipping on the ice.
Life is good

It is nice to read a positive update! I am day 8 post op and your post just help me keep positive. Thanks!
