PLEASE NOTE: I GET MORE THAN ENOUGH TAGS WITHOUT BEING TAGGED IN THE COURSE OF CONVERSATION - THANK YOU

I have not had a good day to start. I thought I was doing so well, and I went to the physical therapist today ( he had been on vacation for the last 2 weeks) and he went ahead and measured everything etc, and re-evaluated from where the pt assistant saw me. My ROM was only 114 and my extension was -2. He is very concerned that I may not get full ROM and that sorta depressed me. I came home and I wanted to cry, but I didnt. He said we should work very hard to get these numbers to 130 and -1 by next week. OMG.
I also have what they call quad lag so I am doing that russian stimulation. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get this knee to cooperate.

What do you consider `full ROM'? It comes down to expectations. If your expectations are too high you will get depressed even though there is absolutely no need. We would all love 140/0 but can manage quite nicely with a lot less.

Hi @jbucks - I have just caught up on your thread. I think your ROM is good for your time out. I am at 105 and celebrating 7 weeks today. Your PT should clearly read the BoneSmart forums :) Everyone heals at a different pace. If you are doing the best you can, your ROM will get there. I am starting to realize this now. Patience is difficult but required as we go through this crazy recovery.

I take Tramadol and Tylenol together and it seems to work okay.

@71Beetle thanks for the info on the tylenol and tramadol. that did seem to help the pain I know I might take my phone out at the next session so that he can read the bonesmart forum

@patient 99 I think because of my age and level of activity they want me to get the most out of my knee

I want to get the most out of my husband for the same reasons but I learned that beating him up once/twice a day was counter productive :rotfl: I apologise. I am not trying to make light of your situation.

Virtually every person who finds their way onto Bonesmart is told the same thing `You/Your PT is doing too much too soon. Slow down. Your knee is in recovery not training. I am now beginning to think that this `no pain no gain' philosophy (that seems to be universal) is not just a hindrance, but something much more serious. Carol

@patient 99 I love the joke so true so true. I am all for slow going but I am hoping that things begin to get better

I agree with @Pumpkln and @patient 99 - slow and steady wins this race. Although I would replace race with journey. As long as you are doing the very best you can your ROM will come. Be patient with yourself and don't push.

Oh he said "we" should work hard on it, did he? Well I suggest you tell him "that's fine, you go and work hard and I'll do it my way!"

These are the facts: you are 10 weeks out. 114/-2 is fine for 10 weeks. You still have about 6 more months to get it good. No need for 'hard work' at all. The only thing that will accomplish is more swelling and pain and less ROM!

thanks everyone. I do hope you are all right. I told hi e we need to take it slow and steady

took a trip to the lake this past week and I thoroughly enjoyed the change in scenery. it was great. but my poor knee. I have been icing and elevating for the week but I still have swelling and lots of pain. I am really having pain on the outside of my knee. I am thinking of going to make an appointment with the surgeon as this pain has been here since week one. everyone says IT band but I don't know. it radiates down my calf at night.. I had to go back to pain meds this past week

Honey, you're only 11 weeks out. It took me about 16 weeks for all that to start subsiding and I took my full whack of pain meds all that time too! You have to adopt the motto "have pain will medicate"! Even if it's only a moderate pain.

And the IT band is a very big structure that wraps right around the side and front of the knee, plus which, any inflammation doesn't generally stay in that one spot but affects adjacent structures as well. And it can also cause a nerve entrapment which could account for the radiating pain down your calf.

However, just for reassurance, I suggest you get your GP to check you for DVT though I think it's unlikely.

Well, I have caught up with your journey and you seem to be doing well. Just relax and let it happen. My rom was 100/0 at three weeks when my at home PT left. We had a long discussion about out patient therapy. I have RA and he said if I pushed the unfixed knee too far I could end up with real problems. So, I didn't go going I would get range of motion just doing everyday life. I iced my knee, rested, and did daily things like dressing, walking to the bathroom, did minor exercises. I am like16 weeks out. My doc says I am in great shape. Yesterday I got a recumbent bike for a lot of reasons....knees, cardio work, leg strength etc. the first time I pedaled my new knee went completely around with no issues. You don't need to hurry your knee up.

Hope you are enjoying your summer!
