You have to play the system which is awful. It's unfortunate that insurance companies won't just authorize the meds the docs want but make you try what they want first.

Hopefully relief in store soon !!!!!!!!!

Chef...what is the med you're taking now that's not working (and the dose they have you on)?

Happy New Year!
Hope you knee is feeling better soon. Have you seen Josephines thread on moist heat. I was going to try it for some of my muscular pain

Hi Chef,

I hope that the new medication will help you and that your knee settles down as well. Do you think that you are doing too much and that your body is trying to tell you to rein it in some? Just noticing that you are only about 3 months out from your hip replacement...

Take care,
Cardie

Hi Chef! Sorry to hear that you're having the pain/insurance issues. That is such a pain in and of itself. Keep the faith and know it will get better soon I'm just sure of it.

Take care of your self!

Cardie:

I don't think I'm doing too much. For my knee it will be 1 year the week after next. One of my problems is that I'm getting off the Percocet so I'm getting less relief there and my OS says there is nothing wrong. Well if he walked with my joints he would have a different opinion. I got, what I suspect to be, my last refill for 90 pills.

I think frustration is setting in (some of you others will recognize it as something else :wink1:).

Irritated, aggravated, annoyed, disappointed, weary, befuddled, vexated..... jump in anyone who has a new way of describing "frustration" for Chef (keep it nice though :)

:scratch::scratch::scratch::

acerbate, agitate, annoy, antagonize, boil, bristle, burn, chafe, cross, displease, embitter, enrage, exacerbate, exasperate, fret, gall, incense, inflame, infuriate, irritate, madden, miff, nettle, offend, outrage, pique, provoke, rankle, rant, rave, rile, ruffle, seethe, stew, umbrage

I love them, any more anyone?

Then we can let Chef pick his favorite ....

Checking in on my 1 year anniversary of my knee. Not much has changed. Some good days, some "not so much". Most of my knee pain is walking or going up steps. Inclines are a real problem with my LLD.

Just to add some excitement to everything else I am now experiencing some vertigo and substantial tinnitus. I'm thinking this is medicine induced but I'm seeing a ENT on Friday to sort it out.

The Friday after this I see the Pain Management guy to sort out the other medication. Currently I am down to 2 or 3 Percocet a day but feel really bad if I take less. This morning I woke up at 2:30 not feeling well at all. Took a Percocet and fell back asleep about a half hour later. Yesterday I only took 2 (10:00 am and 5:30 pm). As long as my doctor is on board with my reduction schedule I should be okay.

I hope everyone is staying as active as possible.

Thanks for the update. I really appreciate reading about other's responses to surgery. Mine is coming up next week.

Dorothy

Hi Chef

We have to get these Meds sorted out buddy, can't have you wandering around with vertigo, trying to climb stairs with LLD.... Just as well you are not flying planes like Kevin (Jetlag)

Xx

Hi Chef....

Do you think its possible since having your hip done its made your knee stiff because you have been adjusting to moving with your new hip?? Im finding my knee is stiffer and has less flex to it comapred to before the surgery. I plan to start out patient therapy end of the month for my hip my thought is my knee will also loosen up at that time. Maybe you could ask your OS for a new prescription for some therapy? Unless you think the pain is related to a nerve situation?

Ha as for the percosets, well Im the queen of sheba when it comes to pain meds if we were talking only about your knee then maybe a year later you would be concerned, however you hip is still very new. Im still taking hydrocodone couple of times a day. Im not a medical professional maybe Josephine, Jaycey, Jamie will jump in. I wouldnt feel bad in your case for taking the percs. Now the other stuff of getting dizzy is a concern. Hope the ENT and Pain doctor can offer some options.

I would wonder though taking percosets for a long time if they have the same kick surely your body would get use to them eventually...yes?

its pretty obvious having two big surgeries in a one year window is a big deal maybe you need a more time to get well!

Sending you lots of good thoughts!

Sarah

PS dont hate me right now you had mentioned gaining weight ahhhhhhh that also might be bothering your knee. I swear every 5 lbs I gain my knee gives me grief BIG time! Sorry its just all one big pain in the bum :)

xxooxx

Sarah:

The Percocet has minimal pain relief effect at this point. I'm taking Tylenol and Advil at the same time as Percocet to get "some" relief. I waiting on the Pain Management guy to help me with that. Right now I need to stop taking the Percocet. Again I woke up feeling all wound up and a bit sick. But I'm only a couple days in on a pill reduction so that will probably go away soon.

Memo to all...only take Percocet as long as you need to and for pain. Don't take it for the "ahhh" effect - although everyone needs to be able to relax for a few moments. But if you take it long enough, you won't get the "ahhh" effect anymore - unless you take more and that is a VERY bad idea.

"ahhhhh" gotcha Chef!

Happy Thursday Chef......

Hope you get your knee sorted out though thats not good and yes hopefully the pain dr will get you onto a good plan. I have a couple of friends who take pain pills for the ahhhh effect. I do like the ahhhh effect too, however in the past I've always been good at stopping pain pills, my OS has already shifted me down to a lower dosage and I think they will continue pretty quickly.

hows the work week going, are you back into a routine now meaning is it a little easier for you?

Take care...

xxooxx

Hiya Chef

With a half life of 3.5 - 4 hours (I know we have talked about this) the unpleasant feeling are going to reduce very slowly while coming off them.

If one is taking 20 mg of Oxycodone one needs to allow a 48 hour buffer to get the drug completely out of the system.

The other factors such as reduction dosage and body weight is going to affect the time frame.

You may remember the frightful time I had having to stop the Mobic (NSAID) due to it presenting as Chronic Kidney Disease...

This is a tough gig Chef.. You are so right the 'ahhh' effect is not worth it, but you on the right path now and I can at least reassure that you will feel so much better when you have reached the point of not taking them any more. I am pleased you are seeing the pain management doc soon, because the pain needs to be managed at the same time.

Good luck buddy, I am thinking of you, take care xx, Sandy

Chat soon.

Chef, that's a way out bit of advice. If people have pain they need relief and the only 'ahhh' they would get is when the pain goes away!

Besides which, it is documented that people with genuine pain don't get addicted to narcotics on that level.
Myth busting: on getting addicted to pain meds

Jo

Perhaps I didn't word it the best way. If you need it for pain relief - take it. Don't keep taking it just for the 'ahhh' effect after the need for pain relief is gone. Better?

I understood but my opinion remains the same :wink1:

It's interesting as I was reading one of the threads today where a BS was considering changing OS for a surgical approach that may lessen the amount of time taking strong opiates, due to a tendency towards addiction...

I am laughing as I write this thinking of the BS's who loved their morphine and the 'ahhhh' (high) effect of it..

Hang in there Chef, I know you are doing it tough right now xxx
