Yep cathy

You know thats the tell tale sign of the recovery being on track when you leave the crutches in the car. Onwards and Upwards. :thumb:

Wow! Cathy, you are really doing a lot now! I remember not too long ago when you were just *thinking* about riding a bike and doing more things. You go girl!!

Thanks everybody for your sweet thoughts. I do feel pretty good, yet of course have the ups and downs and weird things that happen. Like when we went to Canada we walked (w/cane) all day long, I felt good, next day, same thing, then we got home and my foot started hurting, then the toe, took off my shoe and several toes were all black and blue and it hurt to walk. I guess I am just getting used to these types of things or I have more of an acceptance these days. Of course, it is easier to have more acceptance when I am able to do more because it means I have more options. When I said walk on the beach, I meant from my chair to the water w/out cane, not long walks on the beach YET :)

Suki, very funny, and I would settle for 10 right now haha

Z, so true, though not really ever not aware of the hip yet, but less focus for sure

Ellie And anyone else who does not know about the meteor showers and is interested, here is a link https://www.spacedex.com/perseids

Cathy, have you gone out shopping for new shoes yet? No guarantee that it would have made a difference on your black and blue toes (ouch!), but if you are still wearing pre-surgery shoes and having any problems, then new shoes are in order. I had a terrible time with shin splints after my first THR, and it was either Jamie or Jaycey who pointed out that the uneven wear on my old shoes could cause that. Sure enough, a new pair of Keens solved the problem. Just a thought, in case that's a factor for you. I always welcome an excuse to go shoe shopping. :)

Meteor Showers (of course a MidWesterner would be into a meteor shower!); wish they would show up here in FL!

Sounds like you are doing GREAT, Cathy. Enjoy your time, your LIFE, your new life with your new hip! What could be better?

Shoes: I mentioned this in another post, but I am HOOKED on a UK brand called FitFlops: they make sandals, clogs (love them); and they have this "wobble board" (TM) which gives me so much support! I've worn them since January (the clogs), and had the sandals before. I can't live without them, and I have found them to be more reasonably priced on Amazon or on Ebay if you can "get lucky" with your bidding.

Keep enjoying EACH day. There is something GOOD in each day - even though we don't always realize it.

Alicia

Thanks Sharon. About a month ago I went out and bought 2 new pairs of shoes. One pair of keen water sandals so I would have more secure footing when I am in the water and for kayaking and another pair of cushy trail shoes for walking. I needed a pair that did not have too much extra stability support because I had a pair already that I bought before surgery and those seem like they are trying to correct my foot and hurt my back. The ones I bought felt amazingly wonderful and all of a sudden something changed. Par for the course with recovery. I seem to go along and then my foot bothers me or my knee acts up, but I am rolling with things a bit easier now. One day I post how good I am doing and the next I go for my walk and something acts up. So now, instead of focusing on what I am struggling with, I say first, "I am doing really good AND I am dealing with "this". Seems to help.

Thanks Alicia, I am going to look up those shoes. I am always on the search for confortable shoes.

You sound as though life is well and truly recovering along with your shiny hip... Good for you hon :)

Sounds like you are doing great. But the bruised toes Ouch! Hope by now they are better. Isn't it great to be able to walk again. I am not there yet without knees given me a little pain with the first couple of steps but most of the time pain free. Sounds like you are getting into recover and loving it. Keep it up and have a blast this weekend. Take care.:puppysmooze:Tashia:bicycle1:

Well, of course this counts too!! Remember we celebrate small steps like getting into the shower, tying one's own shoe, going up the stairs with alternating steps (like an adult). You gotta start somewhere...:thumb:

Keep up the good work and I hope your toes are doing better!!
Take care,
Cardie

Howdy everybody,
Had a great vacation. We sure do love the Adirondacks
[Bonesmart.org] New hip 3/7/12

(for those out of U.S. The Adirondack Mountains are contained within the 6.1 million acres of the Adirondack Park, which includes a constitutionally protected Forest Preserve of approximately 2,300,000 acres. It is huge!, and full of lakes and streams and rivers. )

Did a lot of relaxing and a good amount of kayaking. 2 times I was actually able to get out of my boat myself, which delighted me. Doing a lot more walking without cane but still cannot rid myself of it UGH! Actually was pretty pleased with how my body held up. By no means painfree, but since I knew I would be pushing myself, I took along some pain pills, which I did use a few times. Sometimes fun just needs to be had, even if it means a few extra pills once in a while

I looked back on our vacation log and was reading about our trip in 2010. I was journaling how frustrated I was with my body and the trouble it was giving me. Made me realize how long this has been going on. It has been -about 6 months since my surgery. I do have to say I am really really glad I waited to do anything about the LLD. Those of you who have been on a while tp know how much trouble I had with my SI joint from limping. I still have a bit to go but it is soooo much better. I still need the chiro 2x a month but the LLD is so small now. Am I where I want to be? No, but I have come to grips with the fact that for me it will probably take the full year at least. I am grateful, though, that I am back doing things I love, even if I am doing them a bit differently for the time being.

Now I need to catch up on all of you

Sounds like a great time, Cathy...and you are right, sometimes fun just needs to be had.

As long as the pain/damage is temporary, we can make those trade-offs with our eyes wide open.

And if it takes a year, big deal. It's not like you are spending a year completely immobile, missing life. You are having fun AND working out the kinks at the same time!

What a great way to look at recovery, especially as we get into the later months. I'm going to tuck this observation away to bring out and use on others here on the forum on the knee side who might not see this.

Thanks for some inspiration for my day.

Thanks Z, I like the way you put that. I have also adopted from someone else's thread a new way of looking at my recovery. I am 6 months out, which is 50% of the way to my year. Am I 50 % recovered? If I look at it that way I feel I am ahead of the game, feeling more than 50% healed. Funny how saying something differently can bring a new perspective.

Hey Cathy

Your trip sounded like a lot of fun.. so thrilled for you that you got to kayak.. from your avatar photo, it is easy to see how much you enjoy that activity. Good for you :)

Oh Cathy, What a way to enjoy your life. So glad you had a good time. I'm sure more are to come and enjoy even more. to be able to move around and do what you love is the way to live. So glad its come your way. Take care and continue to have so much fun. :puppysmooze: Tashia :bicycle1:

Aww Cathy, how lovely that your trip was great fun and that you managed to get out of the kayak yourself, I'm not surprised you were chuffed about that :egypdance: Good to hear the LLD is improving too, you are coming along just swell.

I have one year as my full recovery aim date so halfway there but still plenty of time to strenghten that leg and those muscles eh!

Take care

Ann

Hey Cathy, I love working on my percentage for recovery..

I Have always said that I wanted 90% by 12 month and 100% by 18 months.. They say with anything, it is always that last 10% that drags on..

I checked our the link to your Yamuna Body Rolling... I love the look of that, haven't seen in here in OZ, but need to do some more research.

Are you considering the Nordic Walking? I thought I read that you were looking into it.. I

am writing a thread on the topic for the library.. Dragging my feet on that one at the moment - but hey the w/e is here.. Time to begin :) xx
