I am really, really hoping that someone has some input on this...I am sure that you thought that since I've not been on here for a couple of weeks was because I was out and about physically living life again. Well, its been just the opposite.
When I was 9 days post op from the scar tissue removal I woke up in the wee hours of the morning with horrible stiffness and pain in my entire leg in addition to my knee with greater swelling in my knee. It was just before the Labor Day long weekend on August 30th. I sent my PT a note asking if what we did on the 28th could have caused this. He felt sure that we didn't overdo things and instructed me to compress, ice and elevate all throughout the day. I did this and still did not help at all. By Sunday I could barely walk, so much pain. Didn't matter if it was weight bearing or not. I called to the on call doctor for my OS. Of course he could not diagnose me over the phone, but after asking me a number of questions that would rule out infection and blood clots. He instructed he to keep up the the ice and elevation and to use the CPM to keep my now stiff knee to keep moving so ward off new scar tissue growth. He paved the way for me to get in Tuesday morning for an appt with my OS.
I got myself into the doctor and was all I could do to keep from crying as I was so uncomfortable. I have to wait over an hour to see him, I didn't mind as I was just glad to be worked in. When I finally go to a room and saw the doctor, I did cry! It was so painful to walk from the waiting room to the exam room. I was worried that he would just dismiss it as pain and swelling due to surgery (now 13 days post op). Well he did take me seriously and he poked a big needle into my knee and drained out a bunch of bloody fluid. He said that would help with the pain to take down some of the swelling. They sent samples to the lab to test for infection. He extended the rental of my CMP for another 2 weeks. I heard back by the end of the week that there was NO infection. He had told me to come back the following week if I was not improved and if I was doing better to come back in 2 weeks.
Yesterday (Sept 10) was one week and I returned to the doctor because I was still in so much pain. I could not sleep at night, could not move in bed with out pain, trouble walking and the day before on Monday of this week, my ROM was 98 (measured by my PT). Where I had been using the CPM at 120 degrees, now I had to start at 70 and work my way up, not getting past 105 which was of last night. So the doctor has referred me to some other specialists thinking that I have Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. Of course I knew nothing about CRPS and he explained a lot to me. In a nut shell he said that some of the nerves have gone haywire, they are signaling my brain that I am very much in distress and thus the brain sends out the pain signal to the affected area. The pain is disproportioned from what the surgery/trauma/injury. The surgery I had should not have this much pain associated with it. He likened it to when your computer freezes up and you have to shut it down and restart it, then it works. He wants me to see a couple of doctors (same practice) who specialize in injecting the nerves involved to numb them, put them to sleep so when they wake up they will be reset so to speak, just like shutting down the computer and restarting. I have to have a consultation appt with them first and as I type this I am, phone by my side waiting to hear from the as to when I can come in. Meanwhile, my doctor said that the scar tissue is getting a head start since I don't have enough ROM. He talked about my scar tissue again saying it was the worst he had seen, that is was intwined through every section of my knee, a big thick sheet of it that also went after some tendons too.
So now I sit here in pain, waiting for a call, ROM about 90 to start the day, and worrying about scar tissue going after me again. So please, has anyone ever had anything like this or know someone who has had CRPS? If so, how was the treatment and did it work?
