THR Need a friend who has been on the other side of a late infection

The good news is that I am on no medication right now whatsoever except for Estrace (estrogen topical cream) to help with my bladder pain and discomfort with menopause. I am hoping to be able to manage my IC without medication.
I "feel" like myself. Wish my hip wasn't so painful.
Oh and adding insult to injury more teeth problems. Things will not settle down for my teeth.

Hi Barbie,

A while back you had mentioned physical therapy and I wondered if you had been able to get assessed and get feedback on what some of your hip pain issues might be related to? Well, obviously the surgery, but anything that might be helped with some PT therapy work...

Nice to hear you say that you "feel like yourself" I hope that continues.
Take care,
Cardie

PHYSICAL THERAPY
I am now starting physical therapy with a new physical therapist who was referred by my urologist. This one is one of the very few PT who is trained in pelvic floor therapy for women with bladder pain. I think I will benefit from this. My PT seems very interested in getting my core to be strengthened. She noticed right off in her assessment that my pelvis is higher on my operated side and that m hip flexors are very tight esp on that side. I am starting with a leg lift while on my stomach using a belt to assist my leg into a gentle stretch. Also relaxation techniques to quiet my autonomic nervous system. After a few visits I am going to be instructed also in manual relaxation for my urethra and burning in that area. I will be honest, I am nervous just thinking about that session.
Thanks C Mac for asking.
I still believe the root of my problem lies in my prosthetic hip. Too many strange chronic syndrome popping out of the blue; IC, gastroparesis, chronic itching of my body especially the left side leg shoulder arm and neck. i think the origin of my issues started with transient bacteria from my teeth problems which still won't settle down. I am now having chronic irritation of 13 and 19 molars again with no evidence so the dentist is taking a wait and see approach.

Hi Barb, good luck with the new PT, I am following your thread with much interest :)

I am trying to go as long as possible on absolutely no medications in order to gain clarity on my problems. I am only using estrogen cream right now externally twice a week. My identical twin sister uses the exact cream for a few years with no problem so it's nothing to do with that. That also goes for no cortisone injections. I want to definitely know I do not have a late infection before complicating things with the injection. I am managing my walking just fine for now.

I heard a doctor on public television say that the secret to a long life was making good decisions. I guess I did not make good decisions. I have forgiven myself. I trusted my GP, OS, and dentist to guide me and they all said that they did not see any reason for me not having this hip replacement. Endo said he saw nothing and dentist said ,I don't know what to tell you."
I wish someone had said "run don't walk away from this surgery."
Now that I have been able to stay off all antibiotics for 4 months, I wish I could get another blood test for C reactive and sed rate.
I feel better now that I am off of everything. I was hoping that the itching and stinging of my skin, the bladder pain, anal rectal pain and stomach pain would go away. But they haven't. I know these are chronic life long conditions now.

If I could get rid of that, I would live with the limitations of my hip. I can walk. Just not for long. I have to limit my walking. For instance do one errand a day. Not all day on my feet or all day lying down.
Traveling seems like a distant dream. Last night I chatted on the phone with my daughter. She is so lovely. When I hung up the phone I buried my head in my lap and began wailing, I could not tell her that I have gastroparesis now. I always looked forward to dancing at her wedding one day and lots of wonderful times.
I will be honest. When I dreamed if how I would be after this surgery I had high hopes. I am left dealing with a tragedy and an uncertain future.

Me with Cubbie. [Bonesmart.org] Need a friend who has been on the other side of a late infection

I just took Cubbie for a walk. I felt a few raindrops, but not enough to get us wet. Cubbie loves to greet everyone on our walks, and I received a few "what a pretty dog" comments. He is such a dear little doggie. I could hear the birds calling to each other, especially the cardinals. I am so glad that winter is over. April, come she will. The sun is shining now.
Happy Easter everyone.

BarbieJ, I am so sorry that your so down. After my Cancer surgrey I had the same rolling coaster that you are now having. I too felt that any little success was great but what about the dreams I had. Slowly day after and day I found that I had to make it thru because I will make it. I found that after a year I was still so weak and with tooth problems I cried so much because is this what I worked so had for. I could drive but for such a short distance I was so scared that I would fall asleep because of being so weak. Then year and half later some friends took me on retreat and I was so scared. But I found that I could be with them for such a short time that I wondered if it was worth it. Then one day we went shopping and I had a brust of energy like you couldn't believe. I went for a walk afterwords because I wanted to cry because I felt like I did before the Cancer. From there on I felt that every inch I gained was a blesting and more did come. Patience does pay off. I 'm so sorry that you have to go slow like I did but that is our path and I believe it must be traveled. I will be here cheering you on because I know of the saddness and disappointment that I think you are feeling. You want to dance it will come, just believe it. I was very interested in what the PT said. Have you seen a OS so he can see this? Sometime little miracle comes when we aren't looking. Please know everyone here is also pulling for you. Take each day and set one goal like what I did. I also had a dog at that time and she was my coach and took me walking a little longer each day. I found when I was down I hugged my dog and she in turn gave me the strenght to get back to a normal life. Please know it will happen. I fill than whenever we have something so major happen to us like joint replacemeants or cancer it takes a lot of strenghts to beat. take care Tashia.

Oh Barb, honey, it is ok to feel sad, the emotions have to come out, don't keep them locked up inside.. You are doing it tough right now and there seems no end to it all, you know I get that right?

Gastroparesis is difficult to manage on its own, let alone the IC..

I know sometimes I want to scream at the world and especially at the medical profession who let me down and caused my chronic kidney disease.. I dread getting my kidney markers checked.. I have the request to have a bladder ultrasound to check for abnormalities due to familial bladder cancer..

Life is tough, but you know what. We are strong women and we don't give up!

Occasionally I post that I am going to have a 'self pity party' ... Works wonders.. We all join in because we all understand...

Hang in there honey xx

I came over to say HI and hope that you are feeling better today. We will get there. Slow but we will make it. Take care. Tashia.

Hi Barbie,

We do the best we can given the information that we get and the circumstances that we are faced with. I hope that you have "forgiven" yourself (your words, not mine) for choosing the THR because continuing to beat yourself up about your choice and where you are now will *not* make you feel better.

You are making progress by seeing the specialists that you have chosen to help with the different conditions that you are experiencing -- getting diagnoses, gathering information, trying treatment options and taking time to take care of yourself. If you are able and the weather is good enough maybe having a walk with Cubbie each day will also help to clear your head and lift your spirits a bit too. I find I get quagmired in bleak thoughts when I cannot/have not been able to do something that is "active" even if that's just raking for 20 minutes or a walk up the long block and back -- :console2:

I hope that you are able to continue with your PT and that it is providing you with a sense of connection with a caring professional and some helpful, therapeutic movements and exercises.

Take care,
Cardie

Barbie, How are you doing with the mouth? I hope you are feeling better. When I first had my first knee done there were times I wondered if this was the right disision. But as days got further away from the operation I knew I did make the right choice. Now I am very happy I made. When your mouths starts feeling better you will become more postive. I find I can get overwhemed when I have to many things going wrong. But you wonderful dog is there for you. No mater what is going on he is there. You are so lucky to have him. Try to do something every day. Read a book or watch a funny movie. Remember we are all behind you and we all will get to the finish line together. Take care. Tashia

I have had a horrendous time for the last 5 days. I have been using a cane all of the time now because the pain in both of my hips, yes even my hip that did not have a hip replacement, is unmanageable. I now have sharp pain like a shard of glass is stuck in my hips at the groin, butt and hip bone - pelvis. I had little red itchy dots on my replaced hip on Saturday. They come and go. I have been mostly in bed all weekend. I can achieve some relief lying down. If I move my leg it still painful.
Something sinister is happening. It's like my body is attacking itself.
My pain is so much worse than before my hip replacement. I could never have imagined this outcome. I have been having a cascade effect of problems. I have been to my general intern and my OS so much they cannot seem to know what my problem is.

Oh BarbieJ, I am so sorry. Have you thought of getting a second opion of a OS. I know now is so overwhelming for you but I really think a second opion or maybe a third to get on top of this. Are you taking pain medication? It sounds like you could use some. Maybe even a different intern for a different opion. Please keep us informed on whats happening. We do care. Tashia

One week ago I had Sedimentation rate and C reactive protein checked and results were normal.
Today I go to my dentist for more dental work. I will premed before. Possibly a piece of tooth left when I had it extracted. The plan is to cut it open and try to remove whatever is under the gum that is a hard small bump.
Took my cane to work yesterday as it hurts to walk.
Hard to feel optimistic about any of this. Wish I could have a do over or mulligan.

BarbieJ I'm so glad that you are getting the month taken care of. Sometimes it takes a while to get things all taken care of. Some people had a ruff time and it looks like you are one. Please know that we will be here for you during your recover. Please take care. Tashia

Hi Barbie,

When I got to this point with my hip I asked at the OS who they referred people to when they continued to have trouble with their THR but all seemed to be well with the hardware installation. I got a referral to another doctor that was more global in their approach to my dysfunction. This was really in regards to musculoskelatal dysfunction as I'd ended up with quite a bit, possibly because of my dysplasia issues.

I hope that the dental appointment went well yesterday and that your dentist was able to take care of the problem.

It is hard to feel optimistic when you have a cascade of problems. You are doing the best that you can in trying to seek solutions to each item. That is good news that your sed rate and CRP were both normal!! It doesn't give you an answer to your problems, but does look at those markers that can relate to inflammation/infection.

Just wonder if your PT has assessed any of your sharp pains for the possibility of bursitis or tendonitis?

I hope that today will be a little better for you.
Take care,
Cardie

Thank you C Mac, that was good information for me.
Yesterday I scheduled another appointment with the OS at Mayo. It will be a few weeks before I can get in. Plus since I just took premeds for my dental appointment, they may want me to push the appointment back even further.
I walked Cubbie using my cane yesterday and I was so a achey last night I could not find any comfort to sleep.
It didn't help that we had a terrible thunderstorm and Cubbie spent the time panting and shaking and wanting to be as close to me as possible.
When I called the OS Department at Mayo I asked if my doctor did complex revisions due to late infection and my reply was that I was in excellent hands and that he does.
:puppysmooze:

BarbieJ That is good news about your doctor. I have found that when a storm is coming in I do hurt more. I know that you are frustrated but you will find the answer. Its like climbing a mountain. You will get there and it is ok to take a rest along the way. We will be there for you so do keep us informed. Take care Tashia

THREADS
Can anyone tell me how a thread becomes Closed for further comments? What is the process to make that occur?
When I read one and it ends that way it's so hard. I want to know how they are coming along.
