How is the coconut oil used?
How do I test my urine for PH?
My itching is horrendous. It is definitely worse when my pain is bad and I get anxiety. But i can get it when i am quiet and calm too. Since I am following the IC diet strictly, how am I getting acid in my system. I have been thinking it is either my body reacting to the implant and causing an allergic reaction or a result of low grade systemic infection somewhere. They don't really understand IC.
Thanks, Poppet

I called my ortho doc in town and he is out of town. Called Mayo and they moved my appt up to Tuesday. I am counting the hours until then. I have been advised to go to ER if things are bad.

BarbieJ

You can get urine dip sticks at the chemist to test your Ph.

I find that even with my diet which is basically leveraged towards alkaline, my system is acid.

Stress and acidity is a vicious cycle Barb, you get stressed, your body may become acidic, when you are acidic, you become stressed.

I am looking forward to hearing how you go at the Mayo next week.. I am thinking of you :)

p.s. you can ingest coconut oil, and also use it topically as a body lotion. Remember that at below 22C it will go solid, you can pop the container in hot water and reconstitute it to a useable liquid.

Hi Barbie

I am just back from a - disastrous! - holiday to Portugal, and checked in on the threads I follow.

I'm so sorry you're feeling so low.

My medical knowledge is confined to lightweight articles I read in women's magazines which I pick up in waiting rooms, so I really can't comment on what might be the causes of your symptoms. My whole education and career has been in literature and the arts, and I reckon my first surgeon must have thought he was dealing with a not-very-bright 8-year-old, considering the daft questions I asked.

I do know however, that working yourself into a state of high anxiety about everything can only have a negative effect overall. You have said a couple of times that you think you have made the wrong decision having the hip done. Tashia has made the absolutely wise and accurate comment that we all make our decisions based on the information available to us at the time. There is no other way to make a decision.

Yours might, in the fullness of time, turn out to be the wrong one. But it equally could very well turn out to be RIGHT. Try to adjust the way you always search for the worst possible scenario.

I'm so glad to hear you have your appt at Mayo next week. It seems to be an excellent organisation, and I don't think we have anything comparable over here. I'm sure I don't need to tell you to try and get everything you want to ask clear in your mind, and write down all your questions, as well as any dates and so on, which you feel are relevant and which you might forget during your assessments.

Do they give you a written report at the end? If not, make sure you double check your understanding of everything you are told. My husband comes with me to my appts, as I have not driven that distance on my own yet, and on the way home in the car I generally come up with a few "Did he mean?"s.

Very best wishes, Barbie.

Look forward to hearing how you get on.

What happened on your trip to Portugal? That's no good.
Btw, I have forgiven myself for this mistake. I failed to understand prior to my surgery that I should not have gone ahead with my surgery. I trusted my team of doctors to help me make the correct decision. I think they failed me. I should have waited longer after my crown to see how things would settle. My tooth decided it was not happy with the new crown. I now know that can happen. I would wait 6 months after any dental procedure now if I were to do it again. My crown never felt right. My dentist and GP, said it was TMJ. I did not understand that the odd vague ache was actually my tooth dying. It came and went. I could chew fine. Never having had a tooth die, I did not understand that the quiet signs were going to get progressively worse. For that I am at fault. But I did not know or understand and I was ignorant.
Hope you are settled now that you are back and your next trip will be better.

Josephine
I need your opinion. I have been losing my ability to walk every day. Today I can only walk to the bathroom or kitchen and then the pain comes on. It's a deep ache. Knee will get horrific sharp pain. I have nausea chills and no fever. No redness or swelling. Am I wise to wait until Tuesday to see my OS? I had my GP draw blood on April 1 which showed normal C reactive and sed rate.
My question is this. Is not being able to bear weight on my leg enough of a reason to go to ER?

If I lie down, the pain slowly subsides. It takes about an hour.
It feels like nerve pain all over my leg. Mostly on the front down to the knee. Also foot gets really cold. My body gets really cold and chills. No headache. Also, my good leg hurts now too! Both hips feel like I have shards of glass in my sockets. Stomach is nauseated. I have been dealing with nausea from my gastroparesis but this seems worse.

Barbie, I'm really sorry but I cannot make sense of your thread to answer your question. I was reading something that seemed pertinent and then saw it was posted in November! Would you summarise your problem for me - in more detail than you have? Like 'it's a deep ache' but where?

Yes. Josephine, the last two weeks I have experienced a rapid decline of ability to bear weight and walk. Today, I can only walk around my house for 5 minutes and then the pain kicks in. Deep nerve pain and intense knee pain.

It's extremely apparent that at this rate, I will be not ambulating at all within days. The pain is burning, deep aching. If I lie down it improves. I have not taken anything for pain. The off and on chills and nausea are worrying me. I am fatigued but otherwise no headache or body aches like viral. All just pain in legs. My stomach does not hurt. Just nauseated. Josephine

I have not taken anything for pain.
Why on earth not? A couple of Tylenol Extra would probably help a lot.

I can't figure what is troubling you, I'm afraid. I'd be more inclined to think you are coming down with something but unlikely it's to do with your hip. But I do think you should just rest and take the Tylenol and consider going to the ER if you feel that bad.

Josephine
As I walk, at first I am fine for about ten steps, the the outside of my hip, the widest part where my side of my hip bone is starts to feel sharp pain.
The front of my leg from my inside groin down the front to my knee feels a deep ache. The knee itself starts to off and on feel sharp nerve pain that is worse than all and on the outside if the femur about 6 inches above my kneecap a deep burning ache.

Josephine
Okay. I just wondered if I should wait until I have unrelenting pain or if when lying down I can get it to stop, if its reasonable to wait.

From what you've said, I was under the impression is already is 'unrelenting', no?

Josephine
Well I have been experiencing this consistently with no improvement. It's getting worse by the day. It calms down when I am lying down. I have been home in bed for a week to stay off of my feet. My OS is out of town so I could not get into him. I am trying to wait it out. Don't want to be stupid though. I get a sharp like glass sting jolt of pain just in the middle of my surgical scar. It's not red or swollen. It lasts seconds and disappears.

Okay, I have some questions to ask you:
1. what medications have you been prescribed, how much are you taking and how often?
2. how often are you icing your hip?
3. how often and how high are you elevating your leg?
4. what is your activity level? What do you do in the way of housework, cooking, cleaning, shopping, etc., and PT?

Josephine
Medications only estrogen cream externally twice a week.
Tylenol, rarely. Took one two days ago.
Analpram externally twice a day for hemmorhoid

Have not iced yet
Leg elevated on pillow all day very day
Called in at work and did not go to work all week, in bed for leg pain
This week my activity level dropped to zero.
My activity level dropped two weeks ago when I began losing my ability to walk. I worked on Monday April 15 and have been in too much pain to walk and be able to work.
Have been lying down most of the day for a week.

Tylenol, rarely. Took one two days ago.
have been in too much pain to walk and be able to work.
If you are in so much pain, then why are you not taking any pain meds? I'm really having a hard time understanding this ...

Thank you for taking the time to discuss this with me.
I guess I am trying to manage pain by other methods, such as staying off of my feet. I realize that this will not work long term.
Also, my question has been answered. If I need pain meds, then I go to ER. Note to self. Get pain meds from my general intern.

I hate to sound maudlin all of the time.
Honestly, I was never like this. My pain level moves around from 3 to 8 ( out of ten) throughout each day.
Maybe one day I will understand what is going on.
Until then, thank you dear friends for carrying me through all of this. Don't know what I would do without you.
