Hi BarbieJ.. So sorry you have IC.

Squeeze half a lemon into a mug, add 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon powder and fill it up with hot water, then if you are game, sit down and read through my thread.. I warn you it is long! :)

IC is a dreadful condition and can be caused by a myriad of reasons.

For me, Long story short, I was prescribed NSAIDs for two years prior to my surgery. My OS and GP were conducting the blood tests to check for kidney function, which is a major and serious side effect of NSAIDs. However, no one actually read the results!

Prior to surgery, In the course of two to three months, my kidney function marker eGFR had gone from 100 to 41, my Creatinine had shot off the scale. I was referred to a Renal specialist and I was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease. If one's eGFR drops to 50 there has been a loss of 75% kidney function!

It was touch and go whether I would be able to have the surgery, or if it dropped one more point then I would be on dialysis and the kidney transplant list.. There is no treatment for CKD it is all a matter of monitoring PB, weight and the kidney function indicators.

It stablized at 41 so we went ahead with the surgery. My Renal Specialist worked with my surgical team to ensure that I wasn't given any antibiotics that were metabolized via the kidneys as that would have shut them down completely!

My surgery went very well, however they had trouble when they moved me to recovery.. so I spent 6 days in ICU fighting for my life. I don't remember it, but my SO has vivid nightmares of it.

I had an indwelling catheter for 6 days. .. Fast forward...

My first kidney infection showed up at 3 months and I have had quite a few since, I am 15 months plus.

My IC was diagnosed quite recently.. There is no med for it in my situation. I have to be extremely careful regarding pain medications, I have a life long ban on ever taking any class of NSAIDs, over the counter or prescribed. I can take an occasional Paracetamol if I have pain, which I don't from the hip.

I am a Naturopathic Herbalist ( but cannot give specific advice to any members, otherwise I would be de-registered under the Common Law Act) so I use all my knowledge of natural medicine to manage my condition as best as possible.

IC is about managing one's food intake (and if course those other life interactions with your husband/partner etc) this is probably the most critical factor of it. Finding out what your own personal food triggers are Barb and staying clear of them. Google acid/alkaline foods and you will get comprehensive lists.. Incorporate these into your diet, stay away from foods that when ingested produce acid ash.

A lot of foods are acid outside of the body, take lemons but when ingested they have an alkalizing effect on the blood and ultimately the kidneys. Cinnamon is a wonderful spice and very alkalizing in its own right.. That is why I mentioned the fresh hot lemon and cinnamon drink at the beginning of this novel :) both are very alkalizing and very soothing! Lots of water, flush, flush, flush "The solution to pollution is dilution"....

I try to keep myself in a slightly alkaline state. I stay away from my personal trigger foods, chocolate, coffee, sugar.. Fortunately I love fresh foods, vegetables and fruits and think of meat (red or white) as the side dish to my veggies or salads. I love fish and am fortunate to be able to get wonderful deep sea fish not heavily contaminated by mercury where I come from. I don't eat processed foods at all, but then that has been a life long theme. I am also a Coeliac, so don't eat gluten products, so it is easy for me to stay away from breads, pastries, biscuits, pizza, spaghetti etc etc.. I have worked that component of my diet out very well. I tend not to eat much of the gluten free cakes, as I have found there is usually one ingredient that may not be 100% gluten free... However I digress off the IC!

Knowledge is power with IC Barb, so hit Mr Google and become familiar with the condition.

I find that using pure coconut oil topically after going to the bathroom (and cleansing) is fantastic and takes away the burning sensation... For a while at least. I am fortunate to be able to get the pure oil.

IC is an underrated condition as is Chronic Kidney Disease, both of which need monitoring and self awareness. I feel for you, I know how debilitating IC is and yes I would be fibbing if I said it doesn't get me down... Like right now as I battle yet another Kidney infection!!!

I have no regrets from having the surgery, only regrets about the NSAIDs.. My Renal Specialist is very outspoken about them and he collaborates internationally with the world wide network of Nephrologists.. so I am in good care.. But quite frankly I know that I am my own best practioner, I know and understand my body..

I wish you good luck with your IC. :)

Poppet,

I'm glad you stepped in to advise. Barbie's conditions to me seemed like they could be a result of mainstream medicine, and needed treatment from an alternative medicine provider.

Not enough is written about the dangers of NSAIDS. They work well for chronic pain, but at a high cost. After I had back surgery in my early 30's I used to take them like candy to keep going. I ended up with Sciatica and permanent numbness because the nerve root was damaged after my surgery. No one would believe I had a ruptured disc, until I was non-ambulatory and had emergency surgery.

Fast forward 13 years and I end up with aggressive diverticulitis. Turns out all the NSAIDS damaged my Colon and I ended up having a foot removed. So no more NSAIDS for me. The last 10 years of my career were a struggle, because back pain wouldn't let me stay in one position very long. I used a lot of creative solutions to keep working like sit/stand workstations and zero gravity chairs with tray tables. I also was on Tramadol for 5 years, and I don't like that drug.

NSAIDS aren't meant for daily long-term use. I tell my parents all the time but they don't listen. My father ended up with Pulmonary Embolism from taking Celebrex for years. He had multiple blood clots in his lungs. His Dr. took him off, and he doesn't take NSAIDS anymore.

And I'm very sorry to hear what they did to your kidney function, Poppet. NSAIDS are something I get on my soapbox about, because people aren't getting enough warnings about how bad these drugs can be.

And my other soapbox topic, which is finding cures that aren't so harmful to the body, which I strongly believe in.

I hope Poppet's advice helps, Barbie.

I worry that using too many when you don't need them, could set you up for trouble when you do, like if you had a serious infection.
You are confusing things. If people take unprescribed antibiotics for conditions that don't require them like colds and flu, or if they don't take a complete course as prescribed, then you have this issue.
The rash and overall itchiness are symptoms of Candida.
Also signs of reaction to any number of drugs or foods.
Now isn't there a med for the cystitis that isn't an antibiotic?
There's are over the counter remedies containing sodium citrate which is an acid preparation, the objective being to convert the abnormally alkaline urine to a normal pH.

Josephine,

Wouldn't taking antibiotics randomly cause similar problems? By that, I mean either the high dosing for medical procedures frequently for procedures or circumstances they aren't usually used. My Dr's only use antibiotics for infections that need antibiotics as confirmed by blood work. I was given about 6 pre med dental doses, and was given that much with the caveat it was only for dental work, and not anything else unless I checked.

That's my experiences with my Dr's because MRSA and other antibiotic resistant strains are a real problem. I had the bad flu 3 weeks before this surgery, but only reason I would have antibiotics is if I had a bacterial infection. I think I only had high dose antibiotics for 2 days with this surgery. Their preventative is to get you out of the hospital!

And I agree, rashes are signs of many, many things. I just thought Barbie shouldn't be taking antibiotics without confirming with her Dr. that the procedure called for their use.

Thanks for checking in, Jo. As I said, I only know what my Dr's tell me, and they're very conservative with antibiotics.

NO. NOT A UTI

Well, I have been busy the last couple days going to the doctor for a urine test. The clean catch dip stick test showed trace so the doctor did not put me on anything and wanted to wait two days for the culture results.
The two day wait was agony and painful and I had to "go" 14 times a day. I even went back for another dip stick test on the very next day since my symptoms seemed so bad. Well, urine test number two showed trace with no nitrites or leukocyte. So this morning my symptoms were a little better and I got a call with the culture results and its negative.
I guess what I just experienced is my first IC flare.
So I have an appointment to go back to my urologist to discuss changing my treatment plan.
I am so relieved to have a negative result.
Within minutes of my call with my lab results I received a call that my husband's lab for his PSA is high. It has climbed every year. So now I can think about that.
I have been so careful with my IC diet. I did have a ginger ale on Friday. Crazy if just that little misstep caused the flare. I am so sick of water as my only beverage.

MORE PAIN
Just when I thought this just cannot get any worse my pain has increased. My hip is experiencing more intensely deep sharp pain with certain movements like stairs, exercises, etc. I get a few a day. They are short lasting, just seconds but horrible. My walks, which used to be mostly pain free are becoming more painful. Also, I am scheduled to go for a follow up with my urologist for IC pain. That alone is unbearable. Add in head to toe itching and increased pain in almost every joint in my body, plus off and on nausea and chills each day.
I went to my internal medicine doctor and she is showing that she is sick of my frequent visits. Every test she does comes back normal. She has ordered in the last twelve months numerous radiological tests and blood tests.
I have read that chronic late infections are very hard to diagnose. It has now been 4 months since I have been on a full course of antibiotics. I did have two premed doses in that time period. One on Jan. 4 for my tooth extraction and one two weeks ago for a colo rectal exam. Colo rectal doctor did not diagnose or find anything wrong. I have chronic burning in that area.
Josephine mentioned that one must be off any antibiotics for 4 - 6 months before blood tests would not be affected by the antibiotics thus giving false negative results.
I have my 6 month dental cleaning in mid April. I wonder if I should keep that appointment. Does anyone know if the 4 antibiotic pills for pre dental cleaning would also throw off the blood work and for how long. I definitely feel that my symptoms suggest something is definitely wrong with my hip. At 15 months, I should not be getting worse, and given my history with dental problems post op and a UTI, it's understandable.

CONFESSION
I have not told my husband that I have joined this forum. I never keep things from him, but he is worried about me and has his own problems to deal with.
Sounds dumb but I don't keep things from him. I talk in this forum because he doesn't understand.

Josephine. Have you ever seen a situation where the prosthetic infection also goes to other joints in the body?

BarbieJ

Just dropped by to check how you are doing .. Yes our hips are roughly the same age, Nov 2011. We have much in common.

I thought you might be interested in the following link from the CDC, which is a site I subscribe to.. Lots of interesting information.. incidentally, 'World Kidney Day' was 14 March 13..

I celebrated in the knowledge that I still have both of my native kidneys and am so well informed, I probably have more knowledge about the side effects than most General Practitioners. Research is one of my strong skills, and as I mentioned, 'knowledge is power' and we really must be our own health advocate.

broken link removed: https://www.cdc.gov/diabetes/projects/kidney/

The following link provides more in depth information into the research of NSAIDs and CKD.. A very interesting read and study!

https://www.annfammed.org/content/9/5/423.full.pdf

I have recently completed a second course (21 days) of antibiotics for my latest kidney infection, being very careful to take live probiotics with each dose, so have suffered no side effects gastrically... Most important! I will continue taking my probiotics for the next several months to repopulate the good intestinal flora which is very important for the gastric component and side effect of taking Antibiotics!

My next urine culture timeframe will depend on the 'half life' of the antibiotic I have been taking. This is very important as there is not point in having another culture until I know the antibiotic is fully out of my system.. In my case with the antibiotic is 0.3 to 1 hour as the half life, so in one weeks time, I will be clear of the antibiotic and able to have a repeat culture to ensure it is not a false positive and there is no remaining infection! Every manufacturer of any drug will supply you with the 'half life' information of a drug. It is important to go to the actual drug manufacturer site rather than just google the information.

The link between NSAIDs and Chronic Kidney Disease is extremely real and GP's need to become more aware.

I challenge my Doctor every time when being prescribed a new antibiotic.. I take my IPad with me to the consultation and draw on my extensive scientific information bank to discuss the metabolism pathway of each drug..

I believe my GP has benefited from my research and in fact acknowledges it to us.. I am no longer treated as an overly anxious patient, but now seen as a source of valid research information and knowledge that 'time poor' GP's do not have time for with this condition...

I continue to wish you well Barb and will check by your thread often, please tag me if you have any questions and I will attempt to provide the relevant, scientific evidence.

Water is your best friend, squeeze half a lemon juice into it and you now have a far better alkalizing drink than any of the other 'over the counter' meds :)

I would imagine the immune system would kick in to other joints if there is an infection...

So I have been researching this question. It sounds like it can happen. Only thing is, I can't ascertain what happens, in that situation to the native joint.

Hard to tell really Barb, there would be so many factors come into play.. State of ones general health, what type of infection, strength of immune system... try not to cross bridges if you aren't at that point hon :)

Right. I am frustrated because my pain is intolerable yet no one can find anything wrong. I have had probably a dozen blood tests this year with most checking ESR and sed rates, and a dozen different times I have been xrayed. Also MRI and cat scans. Now I am scheduled for a nuclear gastric emptying test for my nausea.

Oh BarbieJ ... You really are having a bad time of it... Sending ((( hugs ))) from down under

Hi Barbie,

I saw you mention in someone's thread that you'd made it to PT recently. Were you able to get any information from your therapist there about the pain in your hip that you are continuing to experience??

If you are feeling guilty about not sharing your involvement on the BS forum with your husband. You could always casually mention that you've found a place where you are able to offer support to others and receive support as well in regard to your THR and other health issues. He may feel a sense of relief that you have an additional source of support in cyber space. Aside from the thread where people show their scars, it's a pretty benign forum filled with lovely people.:thumb:

Take care,
Cardie

It's 3:00 am and I can't sleep. I have been experiencing more and more pain with every passing day.
glynis I was trying to find your thread but I guess I am not very techy and I cannot find it. I was wondering how you are doing since your second stage of your two stage revision?
How is your walking? Did you ever find out which bacteria you had? Was it gram positive or negative?
Right now I am a mess. I have had a mysterious rash appear this week. I have had crazy itching for a while now, but it's getting worse. All over my back and my back is killing me.

Now both of my hips hurt. My right leg never had a pain ever before my surgery 16 months ago.
I had a nuclear gastric emptying test yesterday and I guess I have gastroparesthesis or something. My food digests tooslowly and I have bouts of nausea.
It hurts just to go to the grocery store. I return home and lie in bed for the rest of the day.
My entire body aches. Am I correct that you only had pain in your hip?
Please tell me how I can find your thread? Thinking of you.

So I did finally tell my hubby that I have found this wonderful forum where there are others who have been through hip replacements. I wish I were one of the delighted ones with my new hip. Mine has been a nightmare. I am in more pain now than before my hip replacement. Plus now I have a myriad of other chronic health issues that I never had ever heard of before.
I used to be a crazy healthy person before my hip replacement.
Low blood pressure, ideal weight, physically fit other than a bad back and hip. My back surgery in 97 went great and I had been pain free.
My teeth are still a problem and I may need more work, I never dreamed this would happen to me ever. I had to have two teeth removed in the last 4 months and things still aren't right. Will I need another tooth pulled? I thought I would keep my teeth for most of my life.
Let me tell you, having dental worries and pain and hip replacement surgery is terrifying. Also having bladder pain syndrome/IC and hip replacement is terrifying times two.
So I want to end on an up note. I was an upbeat person before, so lets try. I enjoyed my visit this week with my son. He will be graduating in May from college. I hope I can be well enough to attend his gradation. He brought his doggie with him. His dog seemed to love me and spent every second cuddled up by me at my side. I think my Sheltie was a little upset that another dog was taking his owner.

Hi Barb

Gastroparesis, also called delayed gastric emptying, is a disorder that slows or stops the movement of food from the stomach to the small intestine. Normally, the muscles of the stomach, which are controlled by the vagus nerve, contract to break up food and move it through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The GI tract is a series of hollow organs joined in a long, twisting tube from the mouth to the anus. The movement of muscles in the GI tract, along with the release of hormones and enzymes, allows for the digestion of food. Gastroparesis can occur when the vagus nerve is damaged by illness or injury and the stomach muscles stop working normally. Food then moves slowly from the stomach to the small intestine or stops moving altogether.

Have you tried Chamomile tea.. It has a direct effect on the vagus nerve soothing it... It won't cure...

You are having such a bad trot.. I am so sorry for you :)
