Yes, the ER doctor yesterday said it does not look like shingles. The rash covers my entire left hip going completely around the bottom and even under my bone under my butt and crotch. So it covers my entire hip from the top of my hip bone to the bottom of pelvic floor area. Front, back and side. I have seen shingles before.

Barbie, I'm sorry you're having such a difficult time. I just had a revision at Mayo. During my 1st visit there they also did a needle aspiration...Not sure if you're aware but in the end they inject a dye in all patients...it's just to prove they were in there and they take a photo with the dye present....Not likely, but you might have a reaction to the dye.

Hoping you get some answers!

Wow, that above bit of information about the dye injection is fascinating... Could it be that???

Barbie when do you see the other specialists?? I'm sorry it was such a bad weekend with all of this. :console2:

Take care,
Cardie

C Mac, in my opinion although I'm hoping it's not the case for Barbie it's very possible she could be having a reaction to the dye. They don't inject as a contrast like in some test, its only purpose is to show they were there...just like a signature. Before they injected it into me they asked if I've ever had a reaction to dyes.

BarbieJ I am so sorry you are going thru this. You do have the strength to go thru this, Just take a moment at a time. Its ok to cry over this. Its been a ruff road and do hope it gets better soon. Please keep me informed on whats going on. Please take care. :friends: Tashia :console2: :console2: :console2:  :puppysmooze:

Barbie, this is no good... Rash! Go away!...

I do hope the Doc gets to the source of this soon.. Thinking of you :)

Thank you special lady[/USER] for your concern. Also tashia your kind words are always a comfort to me.
I was talking on the phone to a friend and she said she missed the old Barbie. I started crying and said, I miss her too.
I am on day 4 of the mega dose of 2000 mg per day of Keflex that the ER doc put me on. All it is doing is keeping the rash from growing worse. It's not going away. My stomach is feeling bad too. I am eating yogurt and taking probiotics. I am so worried.
My pain is a constant and a worry.

ENDO
I went to the endodontist on Monday thinking I was going to get another root canal. He xrayed and did all of his diagnostics and then told me he would not do a root canal since he did not see evidence of needing one. I started bawling right then and there. He told me he thought I needed to be seen by a neurologist that he thinks I have trigeminal nerve or atypical facial pan or something.
Nightmare: having constant dental pain with a hip replacement
Nightmare: having constant urinary pain with a hip replacement from IC.
Nightmare: unable to walk without deep sharp pain
Nightmare: having an enormous intensely burning rash at the location of hip replacement with deep sharp pain even up my rectum
And all X-rays and blood tests are normal! ?

My twin sister has not been calling me much anymore, like once or twice a week. I think this whole thing has her angry and upset. I don't blame her. It is depressing to hear always bad news.
I had a wonderful surprise. My sister who lives four hours away came to visit on Monday without any notice. She told me that she had to come she was so worried. It was wonderful to have someone to wait on me and she also walked Cubbie. She even washed my glass pieces that were by my window that usually sparkle but had become quite dusty. She said to me that she knows I am very sick when she saw that, since my house is usually sparkling.

Poppet, can you help with my gut?
Anything else I can do?

BarbieJ, I wish I could wave a wond and have all this go away. Could your rash be nerves? Why I am asking is when my Husband was dying I would brake out in a rash when I really got upsest. Now I know I can't tell you not to worry because I know that you have a lot on your plate. If this was me I would insist the doctor get me pain medican that work so I wasn't in pain. Then go from there. Being in pain really gets the nerve going. I was in constant pain before my first knee replacement to the last knee replacement. Three years of crying and wondering how much longer was I going to be in this pain. I had to take a day at a time and sometimes down to a minute to minutes. I am here to surport you so please don't feel alone. We are all here. Please take care and hug your dog today. Tashia :puppysmooze: :console2: :console2: :console2:

Barbie, so sorry for all that you have been going through. I hear despair in your words....I have been there. It doesnt help when those people you thought you could count on aren't there for you. This is the place to vent your fears and anger. I do hope that you can find the energy to start a gratitude journal...just write down one thing that you are grateful for every day ...even if it is something as silly as having a sock without a hole in it today :). Take care and give yourself a hug.

The ER doc said it could be cellulitis. I did not know what that was and just now looked it up. Wish I hadn't.

Hi Barbie,

When you went to the ER over the weekend they put you on cephalexin, has that helped the rash??

Wouldn't that help if the rash was cellulitis Josephine?

Take care,
Cardie

It seems the rash is cellulitis, Cardie. The antibiotics should deal with it eventually. It's a horrible condition as I know first hand. Only time will bring resolution.

Oh, I am so sorry to hear about this. The good part is you now know what it is. You sure have a ruff hill to climb, do remember we are behind you helping you climb your hill. Take care. Her are some hugs for you. :console2: :console2: :console2:

Josephine,
Do you know what the recommended treatment of antibiotics is? I saw my internist today and though she is only just now seeing my rash after I have been taking ABX for 5 days she says it isnt looking like cellulitis to her. I doubt she has seen a case like me before though.

She gave m three more days of cephalexin, so, 2000 mg per day for ten days.

Barbie,

It's hard for me not to wonder if you're a similar case to mine.

I had an Anterior that was botched, causing extensive nerve pain from the middle of my thigh to the outside. It's called Meralgia Paraesthica. This can happen with an Anterior. You get burning, pins and needles itching, and bee sting pain. Sometimes it's worse than other times. My revision didn't fix this, and it's permanent. I take meds to keep it to a dull roar. I also had a loose stem, so walking and sitting were impossible for any length of time.

And they kept telling me my Hip was fine with the Orthopedists who were practicing with my surgeon. I don't know if you've gotten someone unrelated to your first surgeon for a second, third, or fourth opinion. I think I saw 4 to get a right answer.

My revision solved some of my pain issues, but not all. The hip is stable so I can do more and sit longer, but it's not perfect. An infection is very unlikely if your Sed and CRP rates are normal. I know I thought I had a smoldering one, but it was loose.

It sounds like you're trying to self-medicate with antibiotics. Not a good thing to do. If you end up with a revision, which may be the answer, it could cause real problems if you get a post-surgical infection. Ask if you can try Gabapentin. I take 1800 mg. a day. I couldn't function w/o it. It's all the burning and itchiness over a large area of your thigh that makes you feel like it's an infection. I can't speak to the rash.

Sorry you're having so much trouble,

HH

Josephine
The ER dr put me on 1000 mg of cephalexin twice a day for 7 days for a burning rash on and around my surgical scar which I had for three days. The rash appeared 48 hours after a cortisone shot in my iliopsoas tendon and hip aspiration ( yep both were done on the same day within a couple hours). I saw my internist today on day 5 of abx for follow up. She said without fever and without the rash being hot to touch she felt it was not likely cellulitis which is what the ER dr thought it may have been. My symptoms are extreme stinging burning of rash with increased pain when weight bearing. The rash is spreading like fingers across my buttocks and down my leg.

Ten days of cephalexin taken orally 1000 mg two times a day. Is this suitable to get rid of cellulitis. I was sweating and then chills and rash was very painful in ER. Blood normal, no fever, no pus. No one really knows exactly what it is. Day 5and rash with pain is not gone.
I have an appointment with dermatology in 7 days. Is ten days enough? Should I wait to seek treatment until I am febrile? Worried!

HappyHippy,
Today I was put on gabapentin for my nerve pain. I will see how it works. Hope I don't have side effects.
I am ready for this hip to be out. Unfortunately, with my chronic problems like my I unidentified dental issues, ongoing rectal pain from anal rectal fissure and Interstitial cystitis I doubt even after a revision, I will ever be well again. Now this rash, which may end upbringing a big problem.
Gabapentin is sometimes prescribed for trigeminal nerve or atypical facial dental pain and also for interstitial cystitis.
So if it treats m nerve pain and the other two problems that would be good.
How long have you been on it. Is it something that can be taken daily for life?
