Missus, thank you! I didn't realize that but it sure makes sense. At 13 weeks, can you wear what you want? Odd question. What I mean is I can only wear sweat pants and sometimes even they irritate the incision area. Fortu ately they're black so I can wear them to work....day after day after day. LOL. So is your scar area less sensitive now?

Vicki, sounds like a party is in order! Perhaps a knee shaped cake?

Nanners and Katydid3,
I do remember recently being unable to wear anything that touched my scar. I started back to work in September, so I was about 8 weeks out, and it was still hot enough to wear capris, so that helped. But, my pt suggested using vitamin E oil on the scar every day, and that also helped with healing and sensitivity. Go with whatever feels right. Even covering the scar with a gauze or bandage pad to protect it from the rubbing of pant legs will help. Yes, my scar is still somewhat sensitive, but not nearly what it was at 8 weeks. It's still purple too. Best of luck to you.
Missus B

Nanners... I am 10 days ahead of you. Yes, I am still slightly swollen. Like most of us, it will yell at me when it is over worked. The incision site is somewhat sensitive, but not like it was weeks ago. For the first 8 weeks I only wore shorts. Think you know the routine. Rest it, Ice it Elevate it, and the swelling goes down. Prior to surgery, I wore a stabilizer brace. I tried to put it on a few weeks back to do some yard work, it didn't go well. Seemed to cause the knee to swell even more. Maybe it was a combination of things. My OS told me when I asked him after surgery, that I would no longer need the brace with the new knee. Some things I have to learn the hard way.

I think it depends on you and the recovery you are having. With my left tkr, my swelling was not too horrible and within 8-10 weeks was looking pretty good. At about 6 months, I hardly had any swelling at all- even after exercising. With my right tkr and revision, it stayed swollen for the first year (of course it was broken and I needed a revision, so there was that reason!) and now a year after my revision, I still have some swelling. I have little places that continually swell no matter what I do.

Hi there!
I'll be 3 months this week and I'm still swollen. I ice and elevate every, single night.
As for my scar? It never was sensitive. I could wear anything. I wore a TED for the first 2 months, but when i didn't have it on, nothing bothered my scar.

I think that with both knees, I noticed that the swelling was gone at about 6 months. Kelly

Thanks all! I kinda figured it would be about 6 mos or so. My incision doesn't bother me. I think thats becuz I massage it ALL the time. Hugs!

I'm at four months today, and my operated knee is still a bit larger in circumference than the other one. I still get swelling, but when gravity is allowed to do its thing without interference--by the end of a day when I must spend time sitting normally or being on my feet, my ankles will swell to the size of softballs and I sometimes get calf swelling in my operated leg to such an extent that I can actually see a demarcation between the bottom of the implant and the rest of the lower leg--almost as if I'd been wearing tight-banded knee socks. It doesn't happen as much when I'm walking a lot rather than mostly standing. Have you discussed lymph drainage massage with your PT or OS? I might go back to my PT just for that, as the rest of my recovery is coming along swimmingly. (Hmmm....swimming.....)

I stopped wearing pantyhose long ago, as I have the luxury of wearing pants or long skirts (or going bare-legged beneath shorts or short dresses in summer). There are a variety of pretty cotton-knit pants sets out there on the Internet (I shop on the plus-size site Woman Within) that are acceptable even for office wear (with a blazer they're even more professional-looking), and of course yoga pants have become acceptable outside the gym. Definitely more versatile than sweats. I've also found that cotton is gentler on the skin than wool, nylon or poly.

DDiva,

I get a mark on the top of my new knee that comes on with the swelling. My clothes have nothing to do with my swelling. I wear cotton all the time. Since I no longer work, I get to be comfy all the time:) But its good to hear someone else gets that mark when we have swelling. Hugs!

Tripped over the dogs leash yesterday, I didn't fall, thank goodness, but I did bend it a bit wierd. I am a bit sore today, but I have PT and hopefully that will work it out. I hope, I hope!!!

I know your PT session will help you! As far as the dog leash thing..... Are you trying to compete with my How to fall "Gracefully" on the cement, in the social forum. I mean we are tummy buddies, but you don't have to imitate me to be my friend! :rotfl:

Well had PT yesterday, and whoo hoo got my bend to 99, but....my flexing went back to -10. I think that was from tripping over the leash.

I will say I am VERY sore today. She had us do stairs, but had me do it the normal way up instead of one at a time and then one at a time on the way down. But my knee was smarting after class, and is still hurting and sore today. Since there is no PT today I am going to try to do a few stretches, but mainly just ice and elevate and take my meds today. I think the stairs may be the culprit for todays pain. Hope everyone else is doing well! Hugs!

Well today I have my PT again. Yesterday my knee was protesting alot. But not as bad today. Hopefully we don't do stairs again, I think that was the culprit. And of course my tummy is acting up today, hope that settles soon too. Had a bad night and was running back and forth to the bathroom. Thinking calm...........

Wow Gail you are doing great!:thumb: Your ROM is coming along quite fine, good for you and you're hard work!:friends:
I hope your tummy settles itself down soon!:console2:

Gail there are days when you feel like you have gone backwards and are afraid to go to PT. I know I have those days. I think you have done really well with your ROM lately considering all your tummy issues. There were many weeks where I didn't gain anything with ROM, but then the next week it would creep up a little. It will come. Maybe today if you are really sore, tell them you want them to do some deep tissue massage instead.

Well PT went pretty good yesterday. I got my bend to 101, but that was with a little pushing from the therapist. My flexion is still back to -10, but I think that was from Tuesdays PT session. I am not as sore today as I was after the last class. I gotta work on that flexion, but quite pleased with the bend. Hugs!
