Most comfortable clothing post op?

Hi Mary, I agree with Natalie, I have lived in sweat pants for the last three months, of course it has been winter here so that killed two birds with one stone - comfort and warmth. I stuck with nightdress and robe for the first week or more, I even came home in them. I also found thick warm socks better than wearing slippers, at first it was awkward and painful to squirm the foot into slippers. Good Luck.

Thanks, Faith. Sweat pants sound perfect as it will definitely be getting cooler during my recovery time.

Here's another voice for sweatpants, loose shorts, and other types of workout clothes. Even though my second TKR was in January, I still preferred loose shorts paired with baggy sweatshirts or tshirts. Those were also the clothes I wore out for a long time--to the store, PT, doctor, etc. Why yes, I WAS a vision of loveliness, thank you! :hehe:

Folks are right about not being comfy wearing jeans or "hard" fabric long pants, like khakis. Seems like it took forever for jeans to feel good again.

I thought that I would want a robe in the hospital, planning to do the horrid hospital gown and my own robe routine; however, I discovered that I felt better and wanted to move more with my own baggy knit shorts and tshirt on. Didn't have to hassle with a robe and was much more comfortable and felt much more "covered." Never wore the robe I made, even at home. The shorts and tshirt routine was just easier.

LandsEnd sometimes has great deals on knit shorts and exercise wear this time of year, but I found my favorite shorts at Penneys in the men's exercise wear department. Loved em and they lasted through two TKRs...the drawstring waist was great because they would be really wide to easily put them on, and then cinched up so I didn't feel like they were falling down.

Great tips, Weezy - thanks! I will check out Land's End right now - online shopping is definitely easier on the knee.... though I can't wait to be able to enjoy shopping in a store again. I went to the dentist this morning (all clear - no infection - yay!) and managed to do one small dash into a shop. I could have done more, but decided to go visit my 88 yr. old dad instead - much higher priority! After that, I was done in, came home, got in a gown and crashed! I had to have the car for all this, so I will have to make myself presentable again when hubby calls for a ride home from work.

Ok, this is a public forum, so if this is TMI then I apologize ahead of time.

The first week or 2, I was at home, I had a few... um, accidents, because I was still hobbling on crutches and had to fuss and fiddle with the pant/shorts thing while balancing on one leg and well,my bladder is impatient.

Problem solved when I changed to a short nightgown sans undies while at home.

At PT and outdoors I wore shorts with undies integrated (nike, adidas, champion all make these). One pull and done:wink:

I found for the first few weeks, I could not tolerate anything on my knee.

As the weather is cooling, that might not work for you (I dont know where you live), but if it is cool, sweats would be good. I did need to cover the scar for a long time because it was so sensitive.

Best of luck to you.
Sandy

Sandy, I think that in this forum we need to be up front with each other and honest sharing only helps prepare us to better face what may come. So, thank you.

Mary,

I always wore exercise pants from Addidas or Nike==but Land's end also has some--I bought several in the capri length. I don't wear shorts since i have knee scars!!!

I found the capri pants more than comfy--and sometimes, I would skip the undies too!!! I just wore my normal size---I think bigger pants would be saggy and uncomfortable in the legs!! I like the lighter polyester pants than the heavier ones--the lighter the better. But, I never noticed my scar being uncomfortable at all---I wore long pants after the first week or so when I would go out.

So, in the hospital, I changed my clothing about 20 min after I got back to my room--I was NOT going to go anywhere in that hideous gown. Wore capri pants and tee shirts--brought along a light fleece as well, which I did need. I did not have an IV, just a port, so no lines on me at all.

I wore crocs in the hospital. I wanted to make sure that everything I took with me could be laundered when i got home--even the shoes. I did not want to bring any bad germs into my house from the hospital. I did not take any of their stuff---basically because I did not want it in my house.

When I got home--on day three---I could get up to go t0 the bathroom--I never used a walker--just crutches for long hauls--around the house, I just walked around.

I could get my own ice, make my own lunch and coffee---after the first week, i drove myself to pt. I never took extra pain meds for pt---my pt was never painful and I wanted to drive!! I think you will be surprised at how mobile you are after the surgery. You will be tired and need to rest--but you can get around quite well. Kelly

Thanks, Kelly, for all of the helpful info. It's nice to know you did so well post op. Also good to know are your tips about not bringing germs back from the hospital.

I haven't had my surgery yet but for my surgery I found some sweats at Pennys on line. They have capri's too. I got long ones too for when I'm cold. I love my jeans and hope I will be able to wear to wear them again. I also bought a coordinating jacket to go with the sweats because they say the post op anticoagulant medicine makes you very cold.
Donna

Thanks, Donna, I'll check out Penney's. I just found out that my surgery is on Oct. 5 - a little over a month away. Boy, does that scheduling phone call make it seem real!!! My mind is racing with all the things I need to do to get ready, and the emotions are all over the place!

I like to wear capri workout wear that I purchased in Target and Dicks Sporting Goods. They were light and have elastic waist bands so easy on and easy off. I purchased Nike, Adidas and Champion brands and wear them all the time. I usually roll up one of the pant legs to keep it off my scar since it is still sensitive.

Thanks, Jerseychick - and Target is one of the easier large stores to shop in as they have the "scooters" - otherwise I can't walk that far.

MaryC-I love those scooters and use them all the time in Target. Our store in being remodeled and they are putting in a fresh food area. It's supposed to be done by Sept 12th. I can't wait to go, I may never go to a food store again. Target is wide open and easy to scoot around. Our food stores have the scooters, but they are so crowded. Got to love those scooters!!

The thought of appearing in public in shorts.....!!!!! Oh, well......small price to pay to regain my life, eh? How long before you were able to tolerate pants (meaning loose soft ones, whether cotton knit, sweat pants, etc.)?

I found that I was not able to go out after. It was like having a FT job--CPM machine 3 times a day for 2 hours each, in-home PT 4-5 days a week for an hour, the nurse, 2 times a week, naps, icing, elevating. I think it was about 4 weeks before I was able to get out. I did not care about what I looked like :D, just happy to get out. Honestly, most people looked at my scar and were commenting about pain, lol! Comfort, comfort, comfort. I say loose shorts! Although at PT you may want something that does not ride up so your pink undies are not showing with the loose fitting shorts, lol--not that I know anything about that!

It will be fine, come on here and write about it. It helped my nerves tremendously! I agonized over a pair of slippers on here the entire weekend before my surgery, lol!:D
