Mitzi if they have a recliner bike I found that pedaling backwards for a while made it much easier and far more comfortable to pedal forward......

Thanks Vinny, I can go some forward and some backward. Will be awhile.
Have a great evening!

@Mitzi Glad to hear that you are taking things gently. It really does work wonders!
Keep at the gentle stuff with lots of rest, ice and elevation and you'll be great.

@SuperSnapper ...thanks! Yes. This bike is up close. I wander of one that stretches ought in allowing the legs then to stretch out. Pluck'n along day by day.

Mitzi I find that the closer up you are on the bike more bend is required....I always start further back to get loose and then gradually move the seat closer until it is a little difficult to turn the pedal forward..I then pedal backward for awhile before going forward again and it is much easier. If that makes sense...when they check my ROM afterwards it is usually better....

Vinny

My ROM isn't that good yet ......it was. They just put me in the bike with no questions asked. I will ask if there is a seat adjustment.

Had a very tiring day being out some. My knee swells up & is painful. More care. I am 8 weeks out of surgery and learned everyone is different in the healing level. Some days I feel good like I am getting there then I go backwards in my outlook.

Thanks for your comments......you sound further then me....enjoy!

Thanks Vinny, I can go some forward and some backward.
Keep rockin' out! Simply keep rocking back and forth---and many found that it was easier to go around backwards than forward in the early going.

I would also move the seat back as far as necessary and even then, "cheat" a little---rock your hips back and forth to help out. After you do this, then ice and elevate.

Yep---everybody heals at different times and on different schedules---and in different ways. Take your time, do not try to rush things, and do not get frustrated.

Please remember that recovery is also not linear---it is more like this:

Mitzi, recovery is a process---so, if you do too much, your knee swells which decreases your rom. It is frustrating to think that you have to move slowly, take rests and keep pt moving---but not at the cost of extreme pain.

If you try too hard to bend the knee, it makes the knee swell--it is basically "angry". When the knee is swollen, your rom decreases. Try this---my doc told me to rest for one hour for every hour up. So. prop your leg up with three pillows, throw on some ice and just rest for several hours during the day.

Elevating your leg to control swelling and pain
Using ice

@skigirl ....thanks I needed that! I am swelling in tears at the moment over myself & the pain in my knee. I went to get my hair cut..it needed it. I stood too long....could have sat some where. My husband was picking me up. I was exhausted when I got home. Ate and layed awhile. I felt horrible yet. I screwed it up & paying for it! I have rested in the help I got here & fell backwards. I know I will get back...I am upset. Well I blew my nose and will take pain pills and rest. Thanks for being there.

@referee54..thank you for graph...I needed that. I am in that beginning stuck hoping to bloom like Spring when it comes. You know, because of helping myself to get up(not over weight just arthritic). My thumbs hurt, my other knee & I am getting a shot in my right shoulder next Thurs for it is a tear in rotator. I have done good with the shots. After back surgery I did the same thing & I healed. Rust or ashes to ashes and dust to......

Referee is a word for a timely word or chart....thanks!

Mitzi, don't worry, we have all done it---over doing is hard and it takes a while to have the knee settle down. I spent one four hour period in agony. Just take it easy tomorrow---spend a day on the couch or in bed with the knee propped up and rest.

@Mitzi I had my PKR the week after yours and I too find that standing still for long makes my knee swell. I've got used to it and am finding each time it swells less and doesn't take as long to recover. I've got used to the idea this will happen, ice and rest will sort it and it's boring but it will improve. I try not to stress my knee or expect too much from it and have really had to slow myself down, reduce my expectations and just keep plodding along, increasing the things I do very, very gradually and taking a day in bed when I need to. One day this will all be much better :yahoo:hang on to that !
Good luck with your recovery

@skigirl ...always love feedback of another's knee happening. Helps to feel not alone. Thank you. I am paying much more attention today to it...feeling better.

Don't know if I'm doing this right, but Mitzi, I've been reading your posts and my heart goes out to you. I've already had pain pump surgery for my back, female surgery and other surgeries but never anything this complex. My prayers are with you and I'm following you on here and rooting for you! Wanted you to know--Linnrobb

@linnrobb thanks for your prayers...always appreciated. You sound like you have been thru a lot. For me it is as I get older there 's for stuff to repair.

So many nice people here on this site and out there in medical field that can help us. I say mostly one day at a time or one foot in front of the other here on this site. Blessings in your journey. Sooo much mat 'l in library to answer questions including people's experiences. All has helped and when I get twisted up about something they are there getting thoughts straight. Nice meeting you!

@skigirl am looking, reading, trying to "pre-"educate myself as I go to my primary care tomorrow. So greatful for lists of questions to ask that I'd never have thought of. When I find out more from Dr., is there somewhere to get info for assistance if you live alone and on the specialized recliners, etc. that post-op patients may like to sell? I see there are alot of Texans on here and I'd love info on the items people no longer need that us "newbies" could make great use out of and make this an even bigger win/win:loll:

Sounds like a plan.

I am doing good. Some Fibro two days. Now rain/snow gas started I believe I feel a relief. Doing new things at PT not so painful but helping me to walk more like other leg etc....

Parry all Texans come together to help the helpless in chairs.
Helping each is rewarding!

@skigirl Hi Mitzi here, not doing well. Took time tonight to read over basics again. Also things in library. I am having trouble with PT again. He hangs my leg over his arm while braced by good knee. Gravity helps it fall some but mostly he pushing it down at foot. He says 45 seconds. It gets uncomfortable and then pain starts and it is reated. Not long back at same procedure. Tears start to form and he says...are you alright? I say no. He says we have to do this. I said my surgeon said to cut back! He goes counting seconds and I am crying considerably. It hurts I say. It is over. It all sounds well. So who do I see? I am schedule for PT Mon at 2pm. Truth I don't want to go! My junk I have worked so hard at is getting in the way of healing.

I will call surgeon again Mon. Say it again. I fear to sound like I am a pansie. There is a child in this older body that's needing someone to stand up for me for they don't hear and it keeps happening. Pain does funny things. It pierces deep enough it hits nerves! This sounds a bit more then you have heard before forgive me. My physical pain is bringing out emotional pain that a nightmare occurred.

Long back I had a pain counselor for almost four years. He was good for me. Explaining so much about pain & it's affects. Some time later he died.

Does Bone Smart have people to suggest I could go to near me? I have special transportation I was awarded in my disability case & can use that. It is local though.

I am praying God will show me a way to help & understanding so my knee heals properly. Bend in exercise for healing knee hurts other knee. Today I had to get a pain shot for my right shoulder for since surgery I used it to help move here to there.

Maybe someone else gets a piece of what I am saying or has experienced any thing of this.

You all are great!!
That's why I feel better to wait for feed back.

Mitzie, It is so difficult to challenge a person who seems to think he is in charge. but, he is not in charge of your recovery. If he hears that your doctor said to cut back and that you do not want to be in pain, but does it anyway, he is an idiot.

Here is what I would do---when you go to PT ask for the owner or the manager. Tell him that you do not want to be in pain and specifically, you do not want the knee forcibly bent by the PT. Your doctor agrees with you and also wants them to cut back from pain to discomfort. If the PT does it again, you could sue them. It is assault like a person in a bar hitting you in the face. A medical person cannot do anything to you against your will.

Tell him/her you want a different pt--one who will listen to you, the person who is paying.
the customer is always right. If someone has the audacity to do it again, I would get up and walk out of there.

Remember--You are paying for this service---the PT needs your money for his salary---he HAS to do what you say---it is actually the law. I would hate someone who would bend my knee until I cried and he would only do it once.

We all want someone to save us when we are in an unpleasant situation--but really, we have to save ourselves. If necessary, print my response and read it to them. But, they do not need to bend your knee until you are crying--that is really stupid.

If they bend the knee to the point that it is irritated, it will loose rom not gain it. If your knee is swollen and painful after pt--have they helped you at all???NO they have not. My doctor told me that my knee would improve for upt o a year. What is your rom? flexion (bending) and extension--the ability to put your knee flat on a table. If you can ride a bike, it is over 90 degrees. If it is 100 degrees there is no excuse whatsoever for someone to force a bend like that.

I think you can handle them--- just remind them who is paying the bill. Would you let a clerk at the drugstore twist your wrist? Be careful not to overdo at this point too. You simply cannot sit or stand for more than 15 minutes right now, so do not put yourself in the those positions. Rest. if you go to the grocery store, ride around in those little carts and have some fun.
