Thank you SO much...I need a Pep Talk....one who's been here & done it!! I need someone with me ...I know God I yet in the flesh helps. At 43yrs of age when my Mom died a evening before this moment of me being with my father I wanted to leave when I saw his anger come alive. I went reach for my coat & so quickly he came at me with his fist & yelled "sit down"! I sat while a recovering person of abuse was standing up. It took prayer, fear mixed with anger that said this is enough when it took every muscle for me to push myself out of the chair, knowing I could get beat like he did to my Mom, and reach for my coat and turn it to him walking very fast thru the living room while h chased me yelling at the top of his voice! I was so frightened & shaken till I got out of the house & into my car. I drove to my church where I had worked for my Pastor. A man I knew so well & who counseled me was there & he grab me & held me. I was a mess for days. Power figures are hard for me & as much as I worked in all this it still raises up in some moment. For this that I lived with & other sick situations I believe to have Fibro. Trauma is number one in many things I read & hearing others speak of it in their lives. Never thought TKR would be soo painful. The reason I was having it done was to get out of pain. Joke isn't it. I will pray & see how God will set it up. So many too many angry people in my life journey. Never knowing at first. At 68yrs it is amazing how this is in my present life.

Thank you! You are strong & I like you say if as it should be said. This is for me that when situations like this rise God sends help. This time it is you. I know I needed to talk it out. It clears my vision to see things in a right perspective

Mitzi

Yes, maybe take someone with you at the next PT session to support you when you say no. There is no excuse for a PT continuing to push while you're crying. So long as you are trying (which you are) there is no need to hold it for an arbitrary number of seconds. My pt always just said try to hold it as long as you can and never held on when I said "enough."

My husband & I talked it over & we want to talk to the one in charge. This an is nog always there. The one who dies nog listen is there. Another snow storm is coming Sun into Mon. My husband is a trucker so he lives towards eve. We both are looking to God to bring it all together.

I like your PT's way of thinking. You are blessed to have him.

Again I am grateful for this site!

Hi @Mitzi It's a good idea to talk to the person in charge. Can you ask for an appointment?

Meanwhile, don't let that bully-boy PT touch you! If necessary, don't keep your appointment with him, but wait until you have seen his superior.

I understand that you have had bad experiences with authority figures, but really that PT is not one. He works for you. You are paying his wages, either directly or indirectly. He has no power over you. You do not have to do what he says.

This is a time when you have to speak up for yourself, and for your knee. Ask God to give you the courage to do that.

Mitzi, I had an abusive mother, so I really do understand how hard it is to challenge an authority figure. That is why I suggested writing it down first. I sometimes do that and give the person the note to read. It empowers me to be able to do things for myself.

You have the strength to do this---just as you did when you left your dad---good for you. If that guy hurts you again, just stand up and run for your life!!! right out of their office. Believe me when you hit them in the pay check---I will not continue to come here and pay if this continues---they will respond. Money always talks even to bullies.

God helps those who help themselves. Here is my ideas about this---if someone is going to walk away unhappy after this experience---why should it be me? Talk to your pt in no uncertain terms---"If you continue to hurt me when I say no, I will find another PT and will no longer pay for your services." He will listen.

You will soon be past the pain of this experience and into the oh my gosh---I can climb stairs like a normal person side of a TKR. I am glad that you have a supportive husband.

  • Thanks for cheering me on. I try now to walk steps. May you have a wonderful Valentine's Day!

Hello, it is over 4 months since surgery Nov 17th. To my surprise I feel good & doing well. Soon PT is done. Feel time will be the best healer. I have a elliptical here at home & am doing 5min on it. I asked PT about it. I love that machine. Working on downstairs in a more normal way. Doing exercises they taught me. I maybe will go back to gym in future.. Sure would like to do Zumba.

Great! I like that you're taking it a step at a time so to speak. You're progressing nicely. :ok:

I always thought till I get where I am I would not know I be experiencing this healing. Haven't driven car yet. Have learn to get my leg in the car...it is my left leg yet it is not there yet. Thanks

Hi @Mitzi I have just arrived on your thread and wish I had found you sooner but you have such a good outlook it is easy to see how much you are trying. I know you will do fine as you have come such a long way already and looking back you can see how many things you have accomplished. I had my first surgery in April 2013 not having any idea what I would feel like after surgery not knowing what to expect think most of us feel the same way it is all new and feeling our way along as best as we can. Bonesmart has helped me so much to it is where I found the answers that were needed and kindness and support you are not alone we are both in good caring hands here.

I had my surgery and then came home all went well no real amount of pain that could not be managed with the pain medication my pain began when pt came for home pt and then the worries and pain started. I like you did not know I could say no thought as people I talked to that without following all of the instructions exactly the way they showed them I would not walk again. I found out that the worst thing I did was allow the pt to make me feel like enough was not enough so started to push myself more and they pushed to thinking this was the best way.

What they said about needing to push hard was not true causing swelling and more pain and a very unhappy me cried so much so discouraged and before this I had been happy came home and felt positive. I could not take it anymore so uncomfortable that when she would come back she would not be happy and then more crying and more swelling trying to do it right but doing it too much and doing it wrong. I cancelled my pt after 4 weeks no more just too much.

At 6 weeks my surgeon signed me up to the hospital pt at that time I was not comfortable telling him no pt at home now feel very comfortable with him he is great. I was put on a waiting list at hospital took two weeks and in the meantime signed up with pt at his clinic . This pt was even more aggressive and after my 8th week visit my surgeon told me he was suspending pt all pt suggested going for massages these really helped both mentally relaxed and physically and looked forward to them they resulted in my being so relaxed that my movement increased without the force that happened with pt.

I was told at the visit with surgeon that sometimes when left our knees improve on their own. just gentle exercises walking is his choice as the most natural choice as this is what our legs do for us. He offered me two choices leaning towards the second of these. One was that he would take me in and under
anesthetic he would bend my knee the other was prescribing gentle walking and going slow doing it something I enjoy walking. I took the second selection he agreed hoping that would be my choice.

Do not let anyone hurt you force your knee stand up and say no it is your right to protect you and your knee you deserve this . As they say and they are so right do not feel that you cant say no they work for you paid by you just as any service you pay for they are supposed to do what you need but not doing what they want not if it is causing you pain. Just simply say no and not to worry even about what surgeon says if they support aggressive treatment you are the one the matters it is your knee and if your surgeon wonders why you are not doing this pt explain you might be surprised that he is not supportive of aggressive my surgeon does not believe in anything but gentle care on these new knees we have.

I have just had my second knee replacement this time more aware of the things that I would do different such a different surgery outcome. I have had less pain although I did have lots of pain it was due to surgery not to pt. I have felt so much happier less crying feeling more positive and doing the gentle approach my knee is happier to . My surgeon during my 8 week appointment this time mentioned swelling. I did have some or lots even this time but was confused about pt as at my appointment with my surgeon we had discussed before surgery what would not happen this time around this time we agreed no pt not like the past pt and better pain medication.

Two days before my surgery I had a visit at our home for assessment. Then after surgery the same person called she was coming it turned out hospital had send pt. I explained to her that my surgeon did not support the type of pt that I had last time he did not support this and surprised she was coming. She said they did not do this type of pt so kept her for 4 visits she was supportive and knew that anything that would cause the swelling and pain again would not be allowed. I had no problems with this pt till last visit and then when she left how much pain just from a 15 minute visit she explained that they are required to do this as this is what surgeons expect they are supposed to do what ever they need to in order to accomplish the numbers that surgeons expect and needing to report progress do it impress the surgeon that they have managed to get these numbers Now understanding this was her last visit my surgeon at hospital visit found out she had come and he said cancel her no more. I had he reminded me that this time we had agreed no pt and i told him that wondered why the pt came after our talk and he said hospital must have assigned her tell her not to come back not all knees respond the same way he said my knee did not respond to pt made it worse

I hope this helps you have the right to protect yourself not worrying if you offend them as you are very important and you tell them nicely but plainly when they do something to hurt you . I am now walking with my walker outside inside using my cane or nothing . I have very little swelling and not on medication for pain things are going great still working on the bend just by walking and seeing things getting better. They are right here at bonesmart this is the place where my gentle treatment started as learned to decide when too much was too much and thankful they were and still are there. the bend will come my first surgery knee is now bending just needing time not thinking about it and then surprise more bend.

Hoping for you to have gentle care you deserve it so much knee happier just like a baby when given care and treated kindly best outcome and happier you. Spring is coming it will make things easier to get outside and move easier nice to get a change of scenery to and not closed in. I hope this is not too long I write long posts but wanted to visit with you as you were saying the same things that I felt know how hard it can be when trying and things are not moving as fast as you or the people you deal with want them to just makes it frustrating. Although people try not easy to understand what someone going through these surgeries is feeling and unless pt have had this surgery they do not really understand what something they do to you can make your knee feel need to tell them maybe making it easier for them to understand and maybe making the next time easier. You are not alone you are part of this wonderful bonesmart family qreat place to come to with questions or just to talk about how your knee is feeling lots of us who have been through the same surgery same feelings and nice to share.

I found my recovery turned around found bonesmart at 3rd week recovery and my situation changed for the better happy to have found you hoping all goes well you are in good hands here so many wonderful:yes::yes: people who make this pathway a lot smoother. Best wishes for a great recovery you are well on your way and doing great. :yay::yay: Holly

I love your story & time you took to say it all step by step. This the type of writing I believe should be made into a handout to all soon to have surgery. Wouldn't it be great feel the surrounding love & care that can only come by sharing. When I went thru my cancer surgery & recovery I experienced the wrap around blanket like heated & given before tests & surgery. Love & care of others who had come thru shared in so many ways. God was so good as I would just have Divine Appts when I would get visit from a lady, or packets of mat'tl filled with all kinds of care in each one & staff & doctors who even hug me. Meeting someone who went thru it was a special gift for their words of encouragement were gold. I was blown. It is great to even have a phone conversation with them. PT in hospital was as you describe...harsh. Working on "this is the way it is to go" **** were from those with no arms no heart. At home of was 2 weeks & each were gentle. The pt I went to that I am in started out great then came the tourniquet. My husband said to call & express myself to the head of it. When the call came my husband was present & I turned it to speaker phone. I told this man that my husband is with me as we talk. Describing my experience & that I was involved with Web Med & learning bow this approach of. when I hurt & said story was not listened to WS not working with me crying he started to sy how that it is true docs & pts listen to the average report of how it is to go. I said it is not individualized then & the care is not appropriate for each one's healing g. He agreed & saw me personally. Hot pack to start, ultrasound warm with lots of jelly applied for ma ny minutes. Next worked one facsha tissue to break up knots. That felt good! Exercises I did just myself followed by hot pack. They had a van to pick me up & to go home. Again a pamphlet put out to give to those soon having this surgery is something I personally would have liked. Not everyone is computer savey so the info given would HP them. I am so greatful to cine Bonesmart in my search.
Thanks again for sharing & glad to meet you as others.
My next steps are driving again, visiting a close friend & hopefully return to a gym. Today I am having a bad flareup of Fibromyalgia. Very much paid. Need hot shower, pain meds & heating pad with rest. It has a depressing side of depression to go with it. Have it for years & have made great strides in it yet it never truly leaves. So I appreciate your msg to me very much for this moment!!
Blessings to you!

Hi @Mitzi Nice to receive your post and hope you are doing fine. I was reading and noticing you have also been through cancer surgery how difficult handling that would have been. This surgery takes a lot to get through. So much involved thankful to have not had cancer but how strong you are to have went through that to. I usually am a happy person but during this recovery so easy to get a bit down feeling confined more dependant then independant and appreciating all the help from my husband so much but still feeling different not doing some of them myself causes the feeling of helplessness.

I feel better now at 10 weeks things are coming together now often not thinking about my knee aside from the tightness sometimes and seeing my scar which is now getting more faded less sore. I think you are so right about someone making a phamplet and explaining how things go even though we all go through this recovery and surgery different something like this would really help. Telling the real story good and not so good so many could be more prepared and not feel like they are alone just not managing when a lot are feeling the same way.

Happy you talked to your doctor and think it is good for them to hear when things are not going along they way you hope they will. They would want the best for you would not want you to treated anyway but with kindness. I have lots of support from my doctor they support the gentle approach to. Happy you found bonesmart best thing to help along the way it has helped me to so much to have a chance to share with others to feeling depressed at time as we all do during this recovery not often but sometimes and we all have the same feelings. Hope all goes along smooth for you and so nice to have met you wishing you a wonderful pain free carefree day. All the best Holly

Hello again, I thought of it being cabin fever being layed up not going anywhere at first. The pt ladies who came to the house helped. Then going in van all via my knee. I think not being able to do things was difficult and had to train my eyes to not look and stay in moment or what is in front of my nose that passes time. As I get older these thoughts come around to think on more. As I mentioned my arthritis and fibro are unwelcomed friends. At first today I was doing good. Then will waiting for a bus service to pick me up I had to call for it was getting late. Here they did not put it down or lost it as the one aso coming up on Fri. I thought calling them to early may not be good yet I let the thought go. I had to call the doc office to say I was running late.....they put me on hold sooooo I went to my car(which I haven't driven since before the hospital) to see if it was ready to get off the ice. Our side of the street is the cold side. My husband worked on it a lot with all the snow we had. I am spinning tires when my neghbor from across the street came out to say he'd help me. He had some salt & then would push the car as wheels were directed by his instructions. The phone call disappeared in the midst & I called back about the appt. She answered & said no more appts. today. I told her how important it was to me. I am spinning tires and she says how about 11am tomorrow. YES!! I said. My car went backward off the ice and I was free to go around the corner & park in sun. I thought I am going to ask him if I can hug him.......I did and he said yes. I was sooooo thrilled for it took all this to get me in my car to see I am ready to drive it. More freedom and it is 4 months & 1 week today! A miracle only designed by God plus I have an appt tomorrow. I can cancel the bus service. It was awarded to me in a court case for PTSD & Fibromyalgia. Never to return to work again. (another story)

My husband was sleeping in Maine today as he is an over road truck driver. He called later as I text him earlier about my neighbor & miracle. I use to do all the grocery shopping and he has taken it up on weekends which lately I can join him. It's a lot for he's only home Sat nite & back on the road again with his 18 wheeler.

We have two entrances to our corner home. One in front is a two step & path to an L shape porch and the other is on side of house with high gate and steps going up. These steps do to age & weather recently feel thru one day as I was on the step.....scary! I was alright. He got an orange cone to warn any who would open gate to come up. Soon having more painting done to porch this is an expense we did not care to be doing. We have interviewed a very nice man. I like him & praying for the extra to pay him. I prefer using these steps for it is the shorter route to my kitchen. My husband after shopping all this time sees it too.

Hour by hour there is more power. I did some crying in my recovery and had terrible pain. People told me that I would come to this part one day. I could only believe it when I would get thru for it is my first knee replacement. It followed one year after by back surgery L3 & L4 with pins & screws. Thank you Arthur........

Blessings Lavender!!

Hello, today I was told I have osteoporosis in right hip....diet is one, exercise is two which I am slowly getting back to and a med named called Binosto. Has anyone taken this & how is it working? I get stomach aches easy & this the first symptom on reactions.
Wait to hear fed back.
Mitzi

Hi @Mitzi It is so nice that you are doing so well nice to hear that your neighbor helped with your car and so nice when someone does this makes you feel good someone cared and nice for the person who helped to have someone who appreciated their help. I understand about how you said you pick the easiest route to get in your house it makes sense to do the easiest less stressful on your body way not needing any extra pain if you can avoid it. I also have osteoarthritis and know how hard it can make moving around now noticing it in my fingers and not wanting this as use my hands for making my cross stitch pictures.

I have never used Binosto up till now have used Celebrex and it has really helped but now my doctor wants to have me stop taking it will be missed as has helped with pain and swelling during recovery and since first surgery . I think when you can see things moving a little easier managing to walk easier and driving what a nice feeling when you can drive again. All the best wishes to you Holly

Hi @Mitzi Just reading up on osteoporosis and the reason why. I in 5 women will have this men to how much our bodies go through making it past this but happy they had a way to help with knee replacement many years ago people did not have the chance to have knees that were not moving well fixed so they could keep going. My knee problems were caused by things that happened at work. I used to work 9 hours shift standing for them worked for 38 years in retail and never had a problem.

My husband and I used to walk a lot for pleasure just for fun went for long walks and enjoyed them . Not as much fun when our knees get sore now planning ways when this happens to get places the shortest route just the easiest way to get around. We decided after so many repairs on our car one year and then the steering went to try to without a car for a while not wanting to spend the money to fix it again and not wanting to go into debt for another.

Then switched at our store to a night position more money more hours but much harder on our bodies worked hard through the day time in our departments my husband and I worked for the same company but also more ways to get hurt fast pace which we were used to heavier equipment and this was what made knees damaged. We were out for a walk one night coming home from somewhere and crossing over a grassy area not seeing a large spot where grass dipped into a gully spot came down and bend ankle knees and ankle never as strong after that.

This was where my knee issues started. Then after years of work and wear and tear knees needed to have surgery. I think of all the time we have on our knees how much we all must have enjoyed the places our legs took us hard when they get hurt not as easy to go where we did now have a car so nice managed without but with knees this way easier to be in a car. I think we take our knees and bodies for granted never thinking they will have stresses and happy to have enjoyed what we did while we could. Are you needing another surgery how is your other knee.

I have had both done now happy I did but wishing had knees of years before these knees how grateful to have the movement again and going to enjoy the places they will take us. Are you using ice during your recovery never thought I would but how much better it can make them feel. Now next goal getting into bathtub again managed last time around and going to try after having my recent surgery how nice a hot bath feels. Hope your snow and ice are melting easier to walk on bare ground now spinning tires on the ice. Hope you have a great day wishing you the best and will talk again nice to see your posts good to hear from you. Holly

Thank you...I have osteoarthritis & now osteoporosis. Years ago when diagnosed with Fibromyalgia I had taken Celebrex. It helped for a good while then was unto another med for pains increased. I guess we all have something as we get older yet it is hard to hear another & another. I still feel this med I read about causing stomach pain for most I can't but sit with ...indecision is a decision and keep adding more & more calcium.

Glad to hear from you & your kind remarks. Also about you & your husband sharing nice quite moments together...what a blessing!

Hi @Mitzi I know how you feel as getting a little older always seems you get a handle on one thing try to anyway and then something else feel the same. Up till five years ago no pills not tests just living now seems always something. I am trying to cut down the celebrex my doctor does not want me taking it worried about side affects but finding without it my knees are telling me they are more sore. I am still taking one a day but think still early just trying to see how it works. Seems that everytime you go to the doctor another pill is added and this gets expensive. I am trying to use tylenol to help but understand the pain you must go through with the osteoarthritis and osteoporosis fibromyalgia not so comfortable with these to deal with to. I tried tonight usually since surgery using a transfer bench for bathing and tonight being my knees and joints were sore just found myself sliding into the bathtub.

Had a little lavender bath stuff and had put a little into our tub ran water intending to let my feet feel the nice water and then in I went. Thinking how would I get back out but managed how nice the hot soft water felt came out feeling so relaxed first try this time felt so nice. Is your weather getting a little warmer hope so so good to see the ice melting and sun shining makes you feel so nice to. Off to our favorite park to have a nice walk me on my walker. I have a walker for in the house but my Dads walker is what I take outside . My Dad died just before my first surgery we had bought me a walker hoping my Dad would still be alright then he died so on my walks think so much about him how much I wish he could have spent his last months going on the walks we go one he did not have this chance.

Walking for him feeling he is with me and missing him. I wish you all the best for pain free days how hard when things are sore. I think it will be good sleeping tonight tired but happy and so good to feel the fresh air and sun and how much we enjoyed it. Met two nice people along the way . One lady was walking her dog she explained that this little dog was her best friends little friend Her friend died and this little dog came to her and they are now together. The lady lost her dog at the same time her dog died so they are making their way together had a nice talk enjoyed this this little dog is afraid of dogs so she is trying to help her feel more comfortable. Another man was walking along beside him was a carrier they type that you see sometimes attached to a bicycle and usually in this you see little kids. He stopped and we noticed that the carrier held a little bull dog beautiful soft toffee coloured coat she was lovely. He told us she had been found along the highway she was in bad shape think she was from a puppy mill around 3 years old or a little older she was without one eye poor little sweet soul.

Lovely he had adopted her just since last week hoping he could make her life gentle and he was talking softly to her he let her out of the rolling carrier and she came over to us a little timid but sensed we would not hurt her I guess. They are so smart this way . Nice experience seeing people who love and are caring and kind made me feel so nice to see how they love these dogs made me want to cry there is so much good in people most are great. Some spoil it but most are very good. Just a little glimpse into the walk we had today hope it is alright to share on your thread but such a great day. Have you found out about the medication you mentioned I have never heard of this but so many now that do all different things so hoping it will help you and no side affects. Now getting ready to go to bed and wish ing you a wonderful nights sleep enjoy reading your posts and wishing you the best. Holly

Hi Hollie, Sorry to hear of your loss of your Father.
Dog stories are all interesting. The one eyed dog....that's a blessing! Sounds like our Kato we have from a friend who died Dec. 14th & was found in apt on 19th. Kato & a cat were in there all those days alone. This man was sickly and asked if anything happened to him would we take Kato....we said yes. We knew Kato quite awhile. He was put in Animal Resc. Lg here. Charlie found out and went there to get him. Today he and our dog Pumpkin went to beauty parlor. I put their pics on FB. Kato is a pure schnauzer & Pumpkin is schnauzer mixed wih Dashund. She we got at our Humane Society when she was 4 1/2 mos. old. She is 9yrs & the other 8yrs old. They get along well.
We like to walk around our museum as it is nicer. Their gardens & trees are beautiful. We garden around our home in flowers, bushes & some trees. Flower pots of anuals & perentials too. Walking & meeting people even around our neighborhood we notice if a dog is present it's what gets the conversation started.

About osteoporosis med....I decided not to take it for stomach pain is real I found out. I got lots of calcium info incl foods and today went to restart my gym membership. It was frozen. Met with trainer I had before. He told me of several he is working with and what they do in a slow pace & gentle. Weight bearing equipment helps osteoporosis. I'm understanding it may not turn around completely but alot.

While I am typing my back muscles are getting worse. My Fibro is getting me. I started gym attending years ago. My Fibro was very debilatating and exercise helped a huge amount. So I am hoping to for the gym to help this too again. I have budget to work on yet, so off I sign.
