THR Mayhip8's recovery thread

Good Morning!
As its 9am here!
All this food talk! I actually put on fitted pants this am instead of all the stretchy ones I've been wearing and they fit!!! Woohoo! Going to Mass soon and will pray for healing of all our hips.
I walked one slow mile last evening with my cane and my husband at a local park
My first time to go that far Dont know the kilometer equivalent?
No hangover from our night out in fact I slept like a log!! Whew ladies could we have turned a corner?!
I love to cook and bake.
When my girls were on school I gave cookies to all their teachers for Christmas.
Teachers here get nice Christmas gifts @ChrissyW !
It sounds like having your girls with you was wonderful,@Mayhip8. My younger daughter is coming today and we are having pork chops, mashed potatoes and salad for Sunday dinner with chocolate chip cookies for dessert.
Have a wonderful Sunday, more later!

@Mayhip8 what you're feeling sounds similar to my weird, uncontrollable sensation but mine felt cramp like, as if I wanted to pull my leg off ( well wave it around actually) it's just that feeling of your thigh doing its own thing and your brain having no ability to control it.
On another point Apple crumble and custard alongside petit fours sounds lovely and I'd like to believe you are going to actually have it today. @ahipgma you too are having dessert so I'm feeling jealous and my little old roast chicken feels lonely without a pudding as all it has to keep it company on my plate is kale, carrot and swede!! If I could bake I'd say I would see what I could rustle up out of the store cupboard but as I can't I think it might have to be another cereal bar, caramel rice cake or frozen yoghurt. I tend not to have yummy food in because 5 years ago I was literally double the woman I am now! In an attempt to take pressure off my hip I lost 9 and a half stone over 3 years and have managed to keep most of it off, although sitting on my bum, feeling sorry for myself looking for treats might change that! At least my husband gets potatoes and Yorkshire pudding (aunt Bessie's however as he has been trying to make them himself for a number of weeks and unfortunately has only perfected the stodgy pancake version! I could volunteer my services as I used to be able to make them but that would put aunt Bessie out of a job.
Lovely to hear you have been in slim fitting pants @ahipgma , I actually tried some loose fitting jeans today but only managed them for an hour while we had popped out before they felt uncomfortable so I'm now back in yoga pants. I was so excited to wear proper clothes then so excited to get them back off ( now now ladies no joking please!) and watch some more episodes of Riviera.
Catch you later and have a wonderful Sunday with both your families @Mayhip8 and @ahipgma
:friends::wave:

@ahipgma what encouraging news to hear you had a good walk and slept well . I'm rubbish at converting to KM I learnt both values but still' think ' in miles/inches/ lbs etc.
Thankyou for including us in your prayers.
I hope you have a lovely time with your daughter and family :loveshwr:

I do a super simple "dump cake" when I want a warm pudding dessert. Personally I use the Taste of Home Peach Cobbler recipe online. Divide the recipe in half using my scales to weigh 1/2 the cake mix and use the smaller can of peaches and a 5x8 flat casserole. I get 6 modest servings with a bit of icecream. It is so yummy and honestly is less than 10 minutes on your feet. Add vanilla & a good pinch of nutmeg.

Chrissy, not sure if ever allow a treat day but this really satisfies a sweet tooth. Huge Congratulations on your weight loss!!

@Carriemay60 and @Mayhip8 thank you. I do have treats occasionally but keep an eye on everything as I can ever risk getting anywhere near the weight I was. A piece of dark chocolate every couple if days and a caramel snack a jack rice cake for supper work for a general sweet tooth but I have to be honest that I do like some pudding if we go out for a meal and I'm really partially to sticky toffee pudding however your peach cobbler sounds nice if it is like the cobbler we used to make at school ( fruit or savoury base with a scone topic arranged on the top, like cobble stones). Not sure if yours is the same and I've never heard of 'dump cake' mix but could that be similar to scones or rock cakes ( butter, sugar, flour rubbed together then bound with milk or water and you can add dried fruit or other things?) wow I sound like I know what I'm talking about but I think I'm actually waffling now! So it is supper time as I write, jasmine tea made and caramel rice cake ready and then it's that time of day when I pretend it's time to go to bed and sleep (well who knows it might happen).
Sleep well lovely ladies and hopefully we will catch up tomorrow, it is highly likely I do believe. Xx:friends::yawn::sleep:

It's 04.42 and I haven't slept more than 20 mins -if that! Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh my Unoperated hip,is so,so irritable and I'm in such pain I could cry . I'm so very tired .

Oh @Mayhip8 did you manage any sleep? I don't take my iPad to bed or I'd have replied earlier just to keep you company. I'm here so whenever you feel the need to rant, scream, cry, moan, want hugs ( virtual) I'm here (some of the feelings I often get, especially in the early hours when clock watching:gaah: )
Xxx:friends:

@ChrissyW ...that went too soon (my previous post.) Don't know what happened there - gremlins in the machine.!
After I had textually vented I went downstairs to make myself a cup of tea and sat and watched a little bird in the hedgerow and the beautiful sunshine on the flowers in the front garden and cast my eyes around the lounge and ignored the dust!
I guess I was just frustrated as I couldn't get comfortable last night at all those waves like pain or spasm just kept coming, in the end I applied some Voltarol gel to my right hip and took maximum dose of pain relief . I can't get to ice as its in the cellar and I'm not able to get there safely
I need to walk around to keep the joints moving and I understand the mechanism of pain relief but none of that matters in the wee small hours when I couldn't even lift my leg without crying out.

I suppose I did quite a lot over the weekend and have decided that I'm having a lazy morning with it being Monday as well. It's very tough to find that balance of doing just enough and not too much. I'm supposed to be ringing my boss today and discussing a return to work but I think I'll put that on the back burner at the moment as it's an added pressure I don't need.
So now I'm back in my nest.
I know today will get better it's so lovely outside it brightens the spirits just to see that sunshine.
Thank you for your virtual and actual support - it really does mean a lot to me considering we've not even known each other for very long!
Hubby has just brought me a fresh brew And I think I'll doze
Happy Monday everyone I'll pop by later X

@Mayhip8 , not a problem at all :console2:
I bit the bullet today and sent a text to my line manager as I've just let a friend pass on updates so far ( they had asked through HR to be kept updated). I couldn't actually face speaking to anyone because all I seem to do at the minute when I speak to people in person is cry while I try justify my recovery.
It just feels reassuring we have our little support group who do know where we are coming from and do understand the sheer frustration.
Enjoy that brew and the sunbeams shining down. Lovely to see the patterns they make as the sun shines through the blinds and the cat is chilling on the sofa catching them rays, looking so peaceful:mooncat:
Hugs xx

@Carriemay60
@ahipgma
Here's the recipie I promised

Bara Brith / Tea Bread - sorry it’s in “old money measurements”

12 fl oz Tea (HOT)
2 oz Butter
12 oz Mixed Fruit
13 oz SR Flour
6 oz Soft Brown Sugar
1 tspn Mixed Spice
half teaspoon Bicarbonate of Soda
2 Beaten Eggs

In a large bowl put in the hot tea, butter, sugar and fruit, then mix lightly. Cover bowl and allow mix to cool. Then add dry ingredients, mix well, then add beaten eggs and mix well. Put into loaf tins.

Bake Gas 4 for 50-60 mins (depending on size of loaf tin used

This mix makes 3 x 1 lb loaf tins, or 1 x 2 lb and 1 x 1 lb loaf tin......however if you double up on all the ingredients you can make 3 x 2 lb loaf tins, then freeze two of them!

I'm supposed to be ringing my boss today and discussing a return to work
Surely you are not thinking about returning to work so early out! The recommended time off post THR is 10-12 weeks and then a Phased return to work. Please don't push yourself. It only results in genuine fatigue due to Energy Drain.

Yes, I'm rethinking it now! I can work from home and was thinking of arranging a phased return of short shifts initially by week 4 - mainly because I underestimated how long the recovery would take ( I've no idea why I thought I'd recover quicker than anyone else in my position!( perhaps financial implications and a need to not let my service down -as a nurse I should know better but as a nurse I also feel compelled to support my colleagues and patients?!)
Thanks for the link and info and especially for responding so quickly and making me feel supported -I'm in awe of the advice and professional approach on this website and forums. It truely does fill in a knowledge and support gap here in the UK .

I totally understand and if there are financial implications it is even more complex. But you can't support your colleagues and patients if you are still a patient yourself. Even working from home can be very taxing. I did a phased return post RTHR by starting to work from home part time at 4 weeks out and phased return to the office at 6 weeks. Very exhausting but I listened to my body and stopped when the energy drain set in. It's all about finding the balance in the early days.

There is real energy drain with the op and also typically a “blues” period 4 weeks in... you must think of yourself and plan to return to work with a phased return but give yourself enough time to recover properly. You will hinder your longer term recovery if you don’t and speaking from experience. I have a desk job and found the first month of returning to work quite hard. I would imagine that returning to nursing is tougher! You should find your OH dept will support you re the phased return....

Unfortunately there seems to be a misconception in the UK that we will all be bouncing around like Duracell Bunnies within four weeks of the op and this is very rarely the case. The NHS guidelines themselves are not too helpful either.

After one of our fellow hippies here challenged the site it was changed. . It now says “you can usually return to work 6-12 weeks after your operation depending on the job.” But unhelpfully says “possible to return to light activities or office-based work after six weeks”.....

No wonder people hinder their recovery going back to work too early!

You're not necessarily going to experience the blues @Mayhip8
I didn't and many others don't either. Sure, I had a rougher day here and there, or a hour when I felt like I wanted to throw something across the room out of frustration....or sheer boredom, but nothing more.

The Phased Return is ideal if it's feasabile. Hopefully you're able to get the time off and the rest you need
to get through this without any setbacks. We're all rooting for you. :yes!:
I hope you have a pleasant Monday and lovely week!

Oh so sorry about your pain, @Mayhip8 !!
I took a short walk with my cane last night and realized it's more the unoperated hip I need the doggone cane for! When I say I feel your pain I'm not kidding! Onward to June 13 when I will see my OS and strongly encourage him to set my next date!
It is discouraging about the pain in the native hip because we know there is only so much pain relief you can get with means other than surgery----thats why we had the surgery!!!! Oh BTW speaking of a pain I hear our president is lunching with your Queen--- you couldn't arrange to keep him over there could you:loll:
Dear @ChrissyW I spoke with my boss last week and I was surprised to feel so little enthusiasm for returning to work---
If you held a gun to my head I couldn't work an 8 hr shift let alone the 12 hours that most of the other nurses do. I just poop out so quickly, and dont have the stamina---so frustrating.
My OP hip is feeling a weird pain along the femur where the implant is and is still so sore--i get discouraged waiting for this pain free hippity-hopping thru my day to occur--part of me knows it's a journey and a process I really do think I'm past the stage where I feel the surgery was either unsuccessful or I botched something--
I bet its simple overdoing.
@Mayhip8 dont you go there!!! I think as women and nurses we are almost hard wired to think of others first and think of ourselves last in our care. This is not that time to hamper your recovery. I'd do everything I could to phase myself back in gently. Your colleagues will survive. We work such a physical job and we aren't 20 any more you know.
This week I have some a activities planned that take me almost halfway back to my normal schedule. Some shopping, friend over for dinner, taking my mom out to buy shoes ( shes 87 and she assures me she will help me at the shoe store if I can't bend over--- good old Mom). And my daughter and granddaughter are coming at the end of the week as a dear family friend is graduating high school and we are attending her party.
Whew I just got tired listing it!
Praying for pain relief and hope for us all And sleep for you @Mayhip8.
We'd better plan another fantasy night out and we can all send our hips to Dubai!
