THR Maryluibel's recovery thread<

Great news!
Let us know what your doc says about the nosebleeds. If you don't want to share, that's okay, but please contact him / her without hesitation.
They may need to change your blood clot protocol.
Hope you have a great day!
@Maryluibel

Oh I will. It was VERY light and haven’t had another. My BP seems to be more under control now. It had been running high because I had been off my bp meds since 2 days before surgery and about 3-4 days after. I will bring it up, and let you know. I find things like this are informative for others who might be going through this. Thank you so much for responding to me

Day 8 here. My house is quite the pit but that’s ok. My daughter has been an absolute saint staying with me during her winter break. My PT is coming tomorrow (she works very closely with my surgeon and I will mention the nosebleed, but have not had anymore).

Ok. Constipation. I have never in my life experienced it and today felt like I had a BABY! TMI I know, but uhm wow. Painful. I’m on no narcotics and haven’t been since after 24 hours after surgery. So is it those narcotics and anesthesia?

So my daughter brought me prune juice. 30 minutes after drinking I have an allergic reaction (spasms in my esophagus, which have lead to anaphylaxis in the past). Great. So I down Benadryl and Zantac and things calm down. Must have sulfites in it and I’m allergic. Have miralax for tomorrow.

But I’m wondering, do I need it since not on narcs? I am taking Tylenol 1000 mg every 6 hours. Nights are hard though. Pain. So I just don’t overdo it. I don’t care. I lay around all day and watch Netflix.

Do a few PT exercises. But now I’m getting the dreaded RESTLESS LEGS at night . But I’m noticing walking doesn’t feel AS weird. But I do think my right leg is longer after having it replaced. But apparently it’s common to feel that way I hear. Good night everyone

I think it’s highly possible that your system is still sluggish after anesthesia and narcotics. It takes awhile to get back to normal. Once you start moving more, things will probably improve.

And yes, I found nights to be substantially worse than days (swelling was the culprit, I think). Perhaps a Benadryl would help you sleep better??

Yay, for getting things going.
I took mild stool softeners for some time...the inactivity can also make things hard.
I still think they should have some options for managing your pain that could make you more comfortable while you recover?
If you stay with Tylenol, do take it regularly and at a maximum dose.
Early early days...hope you are keeping that ice going as much as you can.
I finally iced in my recliner for many nights early on.
Easier than trying to get comfy in the bed and I could distract myself with a boring cooking show.
The perceived leg length difference is very common. Check out this article in our library.

Wishing you comfort and a better day!

Oh wow. Everything you said here. I’m in my recliner more than my bed. Yes I take the Tylenol regularly. The pain is mostly at night and I usually end up getting out of bed and sleeping in the recliner. I don’t know why that’s better but it is. Thanks for the leg length article, on point! Hoping today is a good day for all, or at least filled with moments of no pain, laughter, a good bm , a good tv show, good food, sunshine. Gotta find the good stuff because the bad stuff just is....at least this is what I tell myself

I have a weird question: can you floss your teeth on aspirin therapy

Yes, you can. At least I did.
Floss away!
@Maryluibel

I would stick with the MiraLAX for a while until you are really back to regularity. It doesn't hurt you to take it....it just improves the quality of your stools. If you're not on pain meds, it may only take a day or two to get back to normal.

Don't worry about where you sleep or even when. Just go for whatever rest you can get in these early weeks. All this is perfectly normal.

I’m a little worried. PT was at my house and my temp was 100. On Tylenol. May be sinus. May be nothing. Of course my primary booked through next week. Trying not to be scared. The site looks fine she said, no redness or oozing

:hi:Low grade temps are not uncommon after major surgery.
Does make one anxious however..:unsure:
Stay hydrated! I used that monster sippy cup they give you at the hospital to keep from having to get up so much or call for help.
Also had DH get the bags of grapes, Red, White and Green!
Easy to put in a bowl and nibble as I didn't have much of an appetite for first weeks!

I hope today is a good day.
:yes:

So it’s day 10 and I’m still running a low grade temp, 98.9 -100, on Tylenol! When I first get up it’s 97.8. Trying not to be worried, but it’s a little hard.
I’m walking in my walker around the house. Can’t really go outside because we live in the county on a gravel road with a gravel drive. My carpet looks like I vacuum a lot but really just my walker wheels . My son hired a cleaning service today because he has been working nights all through Christmas (radiology resident) and just really wanted to help. Wow, I have a clean bathroom and kitchen and clean sheets on my bed. My Cinderella daughter was quite happy because she has done everything since day 1. Wouldn’t even leave the hospital. Everything seems fine though except this temp. I know it’s normal, I’m just wondering how long this lasts. Have been reading a lot on this site. I’m glad it’s here

Hi @Maryluibel
Rather than continue to worry, why don't you phone the office of your OS and speak with whoever is on call.
It most likely will be a PA that calls you back. It would be worth any reassurance they have to offer and they may give you a timeline as a gauge to know when you need to be concerned about a fever. Unfornuate but understandable that appts. will be backed up with holidays falling two weeks in a row.
Wishing you comfort and peace of mind. I hope you have a relaxing weekend.

Thank you. I called my primary yesterday, as was suggested, and everyone gone or booked. So I’m left with urgent care or walk in clinic. Those come with its own set of risks (flu etc). So I’m just watching it. Sorry for whining, I was just wondering if anyone else had this experience and it EVENTUALLY WENT AWAY!!

You aren't whining, so please no worries there. Your temp is low grade and I know it can be common in the first week, possibly even longer. I understand your concern but please don't ever feel as though you're whining. Posing questions or concerns here is part of what BoneSmart is all about. Hopefully someone who's experienced the same will come along and comment. I'll tag @Josephine and if she's around tomorrow maybe she can advise on how long you can run a fever post op.
Try to distract yourself with whatever you find relaxing.
Hugs :console2:
@Maryluibel

Definitely understand your concern..hopefully it is body reacting to post surgery trauma...but Josephine will be better qualified to weigh in.
If it hangs around I would at least let the OS office be aware.

Stay well hydrated! Don't want UTI or to become dehydrated..yeah, I know...darned extra trips to potty after finally getting comfy in the chair:nah:

carpet looks like I vacuum a lot but really just my walker wheels .
:heehee:
That made me laugh.
Could use that trick later, maybe I need to get my walker out of the attic.

Happy Saturday @Maryluibel
How are you doing this morning? In looking online last evening I found an informational article on
Hip Replacement Recovery from the University of Maryland, St Joseph Medical Center of which I have no affiliation, was just searching about post op fever. It stated fever can be occur for two weeks post op due to blood in the skin and muscle layers near the surgical site. Blood is an irritant and the body's response is for a slight fever to occur. A fever 101F, or over, should be reported to your doctor.
Hope this eases your mind a bit. Wishing you a peaceful Saturday!
