Hello Everyone

It’s been a long time but to me it feels like yesterday. Nothing has changed. :gaah:

I went back to work 4 Sept graduated return to work. It was nice to have an element of normal in my life as it was 13 months since I had worked. I was doing pretty well and that lasted all of three weeks before I was on double pain meds and 15 Oct I was put back on medical leave.

I saw my GP and asked for more investigation to be done and he recommended that see my surgeon and that was yesterday. I have been dragging my poor hubby to my appointments as I have been under a therapist's care for mild depression and she suggested that my hubby’s presence would get more results and it did.

My surgeon finally said that I do not have a psoas tear but rather the gluteus medius and minimus muscle repair that he did in surgery tore off the bone when I was at PT. The injury was 6 months ago and now I find out.

He said that that explains the weakness I have in my glutes (no kidding) and my severe limp. Why it took him so long to tell me just baffles my confused little brain? What bothers me is I have been busting my buns to strengthen my glutes and they are all screwed up. And here I thought it was my fault for not trying hard enough.

He did indicate that the tears should not be the reason for the pain and I asked him to start investigating why I am still in baseline 6 pain after 9 months. I had blood tests for infection and he is sending me for bone scan (to see the status of the prosthesis) and I am going to ask for more and more tests until I know what is going on.

It has been a long road but its time to put on my big girl panties and stop feeling like a baby. My therapist tells me I have to be my own advocate but it’s hard when you don’t know what to ask.

I’ll keep you informed as things proceed.

I think of you all often and remember all the support that I have received and I truly appreciate it.

Love

Hi Carol,
Great to hear from you, and glad you are OK.
Can't believe the surgeon did not tell you what was going on 6 months ago, would have saved you lots of anguish these last few months. You were busting your buns, and he had already busted them for you.
At least you have some answers and I am hoping you are on your way to healing.
Wishing you all the best,
Chris

Hi Carol!

So good to have a post from you. Really hoping you can get this sorted out and hopefully sooner rather than later. You have the right attitude to stick with it until you find an answer. Take care, honey. We love to hear from you. Please don't stay away so long this time.

Love and hugs to you.

Hi Carol,

So thrilled to hear from you, but not thrilled with your news, although at least now you are starting to get more information.

Please don't leave us so long, we miss you honey and we sure do need each other..

Let us know what happens with the test results, and keep asking questions :)

Many hugs and love xxx

Hello there Carol,

I am so sorry that you are still dealing with such pain at this time. Why in the world did this OS not tell you about the bone problem? Wouldn't this affect the whole approach to PT?? But he says these things are not causing the pain? I am so glad that you are getting more tests done.

Yes, please be your own advocate and demand that they get to the bottom of this so you know how to proceed.

Warm regards and best of luck in this

Elle

Carol, I wonder what had happened to you. I have a couple of times tried to find you and for some reason I wasn't able. I have to admit I have had some problems with recover but now doing better. Sorry to hear about the problems, wish I could help. But I can send some good waves. I just had some pain and I think I got back under control. It is a roller coaster isn't it. Please don't be a stranger, please post more because I want to hear how you are doing. Do take care and try to have a good weekend. :console2:Tashia :bicycle1:

Oh Carol, I'm so sorry you are still having such a hard time. I was hoping we hadn't heard from you in so long because you were doing great and didn't need us any more. Darn!!!!! Now that you have come back for a visit, please stay so we can help you through this difficult time.

I'm glad you pushed the doctor to figure out what was going on. Sorry it took so long, though. Hopefully, they will get a better handle on things and you will see some improvement soon. Any improvement would boost your spirits, I'm sure.

It is true you have to be your own advocate. Sometimes all you can do is to be firm and relentless--a "something is wrong, and the way I am feeling is unacceptable--I need you to explore this further" can be enough to get the medical professionals' attention and get them working on it.

As you may remember, I'm still struggling with my own post op injury. I'm not having as much trouble as you are, but I finally reached the point where I couldn't deal the "wait and see" approach any longer--something was wrong and I wanted more done. My surgeon thought it was a psoas problem, as well--I think that is the most common area for muscle problems post op. He injected mine and I don't think it's done much ... BUT, injecting it and numbing it up enabled me to better isolate the pain and figure out the primary problem is in a neighboring hip adductor muscle(s). At least it's a step in the right direction ... although I, too, could be in for a long haul because my back seems to be worse after the surgery.

My point is sometimes you don't need to know what specific medical type questions to ask ... just be able to speak up for yourself and demand that they do more exploration into your problem, which it sounds like you did. And, if this doctor can't get to the bottom of it, go see another one. Never settle for answers that don't feel right in your heart and gut.

Keep coming back to the board. You are surrounded by love and support here.

Dorothy

Hey Carol, I was just thinking about you last night and here you are! Great to see you back! Please do keep us up to date on your situation. It's been a long, tough fight for you. Hang in there and get those answers!

Hi Carol, it's lovely to hear from you but I am so sorry it was not good news from your OS, how you kept yourself from strangling him I don't know :gaah:

Now you at least know what you are dealing with, albeit much later than it should be I hope something can be done to help in your recovery.

Take care and don't be a stranger, as others have already said, we have all been wondering how you were.

Thank you so much for all the well wishes. I forgot how good it feels to get them and also to hear back from so many people who are keeping track of me. That was such a pleasant surprise.

I have (on my own) increased my morphine and it has made a tremendous difference. I have no need for anything other than an occasional Tylenol and I'm good for the day.

Talked to my youngest son and he is concerned that I will get "hooked" on the morphine especially now that I will be increasing the dosage. But in the back of my brain I hear my therapist telling me not be be a hero. It's such a fine line pain management follows. But I just cannot do the pain thing any more and I just want to be able to take a deep breath and have a good day for a change. It's funny how little things get to be so important like taking a walk, or going to get groceries. Neither of these things I can do but I will----just watch me.

Take care everyone and be comfortable.:friends:Hugs to you all.....

Love

Mad Rocker, My doctor and I just had a round about morphine. I know I feel better on the dose he had me on, then he reduced it and I hurt. I am back on it now and now I need the back through much less. I wish I could say I don't need any but that is that. I did find out that because I had the hip and the knee done so close the pt thinks I am still trying to get over both. On the way home I remembered I also had a hand surgrey 6 weeks before the hip. So I have to remind the doctor, I have had lots of cutting. Just going thr the day with no pain is so great as you will agree. I don't want to be a addit either so I write down every time I take a pill so every pill is accounted for that seems to help the doctor accept me taking them. Please do take care and I hope you had a good weekend. Tashia :puppysmooze::bicycle1:

Hi Carol, of COURSE there are people here wondering how you've been! I was just saying the other day how much I miss the ones who have left and we never hear from again. I always hope they are just too busy feeling good and having fun and that is the reason. In your case, however, I think to myself--she should have been here throughout this terrible time so we can help her!!!! :-) So, please stick around and let us help you through this :-)

About getting addicted to the drugs. I've discussed this with my back/pain management clinic, since I've been taking Percocet or oxycodone for about a year or more straight. The nurse practitioner I see said that there is always the possibility of getting physically dependent on it ... but, if that occurs they can switch me to something else or give me a drug that will help me get off the Percocet. She acted like it was no big deal and said "TAKE YOUR MEDICATION! I'd rather have you do that and keep moving than skimp on it and become more sedentary. That will be worse for you." So, I take it. I did go off everything, even my anti anflammatory for several days before my last hip surgeon appointment because I wanted him to see what I was really like day to day. That was tough from a pain perspective, but I didn't feel any withdrawl symptoms or cravings--I've never been addicted to anything (except chocolate, lol) so I don't know what it feels like ... but I felt pretty normal that way.

I'm curious--does the PT who injured you know about this? You may remember that I sufferred a PT injury right after surgery. When I told the head PT (who was not present during these "sessions from you-know-where" but stopped in for visits here and there and was very kind and caring--I don't believe he would have pushed me as hard as his underlings did), he was horribly distraught and kept saying--"you should have stopped doing the exercises; I'm so sorry that happened to you" over and over. I've found that the PT assistants are pushier than the true PTs. Was your offender an actual PT or a PT assistant?

Thinking of you ...

I just finished reading some of some of my old posts and now I'm really depressed. I was posting in April that in 4 months every thing will hopefully be alright. What a joke on me!

I suppose that it could be worse as I have read about some of our members who are having a real bad time but tonite I just feel a little "poor me".

I go for my bone scan on Friday and ...I just know the test will be negative. Now you would think I would be happy about that. But I am just darn tired about not knowing why I have so much pain. I thought that the surgery was to fix that problem. I can remember people saying that the first thing I would notice is the pain from the arthritis would be gone. I'm still waiting.:umm:

Take care and be comfortable

Hi Carol, so glad to see you here. So sorry about your situation. Please don't get depressed. At least you are moving forward with the scan.

Have you thought about getting a second opinion? Perhaps seeing someone totally not connected with your current surgeon? Frankly I wouldn't stay with a surgeon who needs your husband there before you get the truth. Totally not on!

Hang in there Carol! We are here for you anytime! :friends:

One day at a time Carol honey, lets find out what the bone scan indicates.

I am so thrilled you are back with your BS family who love you and want to support you... stay with us babe..

Hugs and love xxxx

Carol, I'm so sorry to hear there is no progress. I certainly understand your frustration. You are due some "poor me" time--you have been through (and are still going through) SO much. Please keep posting and don't give up on trying to find the source of your pain. I think not knowing is worse than knowing and dealing with whatever is wrong, even if it is something you'd rather not have going on. I'm praying for something easily repairable and that you will soon feel better.

Take care and continue to post. I've noticed you aren't posting that often. Let us help you through this difficult time.

Dorothy

MadRocker, So sorry to hear about this. You might be surprised about the bone scan. Things do get better after a while. I never understood why we have to suffer but we do. Finally after 2 and half years I am started to belive I am going to make it. A very ruff time to say the least. You do have a right for a pitty party. If I can surport you in any way please let me know. Do take care and do I care about you and I am concerned about you. Please be safe. Tashia
