Hi @Minnie's knees Not too much longer now till you have your new knee this month is just flying by so fast. It will be nice for you after you get home to sit on your porch and hand out candy it is fun to see the costumes and the kids and how amazing people are at thinking up some of the neat costumes they dress up in. Remembering how much fun Halloween was was we were kids and how excited we were to go out on Halloween night visiting the neighbors on the street. Wishing you the best for your surgery and take it easy when you come home knowing all will turn out just great for you. Weather is beautiful today and not quite as warm as forecasted but love the fresh air and milder weather before the cold weather starts. Hope you are having a nice day Holly

@lavender Hubby says thank you for the Birthday wishes! I like the mashed potatoes too, especially with cheese and bacon bits. Still stuffing is the best, I make it with sausage, celery, onion, sage, chicken broth, cornbread and regular bread. Nice and simple, but yummy.
We are still rainy and chilly here.

Hi @tiredwife Tell your husband he is very welcome such a nice time of the year for a birthday. Your stuffing sounds good my husband would love that one and think that sounds nice I would like it to. We went on a bus trip one day a few years ago and it was to go and see a One of a kind show all types of stuff from homemade fairies and paintings and all crafts . One display was selling things to put into mashed potatoes and they were selling some type of garlic powder form gave us samples and they were so good.

Someone I know puts cream cheese cubes in theirs and they are good to but love mashed potatoes with pepper and lots of margarine or butter what ever there is and this is what fills me up at the buffet they are filling even with just a little bit but your cheese and bacon version I will have to try that do you add cooked bacon and shredded cheese how do you do it would like to try this. Slept with the window open all the way last night quite warm did not expect it would be this mild but love the feeling of being able to sleep with fresh air coming.

Saw another friend today when my husband was shopping for a frying pan we collect points from the Hudsons Bay company which you receive when you make a purchase large dutch oven type t-fal frying pan on sale from 59.99 down to 29.99. Then points saved brought it down to 10.00 so a great deal ours has paid for itself now and time to get a new one just did not want to pay what they normally cost so great day to buy one. Our friend from work is working at that branch now and being we worked for the Bay who owned the store we worked for before it was sold we still get our discount so that helps to.

She asked about my Dad and had heard he had died and offered her condolences asked about my knee as she knew it was difficult at the end to get around and told her the second knee was due in December for replacement . We worked together for over 25 years just not so many chances to get together over the past while.

Hope the rain stops where you are and you are enjoying your day. Holly

@lavender Hi Holly, I just add the cheese (shredded) and already cooked bacon bits, when the mashed potatoes are done I add them then. Sometimes we add sour cream to mashed potatoes when they are done.
We have a huge Dutch oven for camping (kind with little legs), but it is a huge one and with just the two of us we would like a smaller one. I think we are going to try to trade for a smaller one. That way we won't have to buy one. It is always nice bumping into friends you hadn't seen in a while. You have a great day!

Hi Holly @lavender

As always reading your posts gives me a very relaxing and 'homey" feeling.
Thank you for sharing your day to day activities and memories of people and places from your past.

I don't know if you have ever read any books or short stories by the Irish author, Maeve Binchy - as your posts remind me of what she would write about.

Take care and thank you for sharing,
Cathie

@lavender our granddaughters are 8 & 10 and live with us with our daughter. I am very involved with them as my daughter works evenings and some weekends. They are excited for Halloween and were so worried about missing trick or treat so my daughter requested the day off. Our weather was a little cooler today which was nice as we don't get much fall here. Hope you had a nice day too.

Hi @tiredwife Hope you are having a nice morning. Your mashed potatoes sound really good and think we will try the cheese and bacon in them next time we make them sound so good. The frying pan we had to replace for making things like eggs was purchased at our store liquidation going out of business sales. We waited till the percentages went high and bought the pan on the 60 percent off mark it was a brand we would not normally have bought as too expensive normally Paula Deen but it was a good deal when the percentage was at that point. Three years it has made so many things but now going to keep it more for spagetti sauce and things that will not mind the bottom of the pan being a little messed up we have had lots of use out of it.

Today is quite warm a little muggy and now sun yet but it rained last night so a little wet for the park walk seeing if it is a little dryer later . My husband has suggested we go for breakfast this morning as the weather is too wet for a walk instead of our usual Thursday breakfast this is good as Thursdays are usually pretty busy. Hope you have a nice day and no rain for you today we can hope Holly

Hi @marmora Hope you are having a nice day and thank you for your kindness. My Mom used to read books by Maeve Binchy we bought her a few a couple of years ago and know she likes them to. I have never read her books but think I would like to. My Mom enjoys historical books things about England Ireland and Scotland the way people lived one of her favorite authors is Catherine Cookson as well .

My Grammas parents were from England and she travelled as a tiny child with their large family. Her Dad my great grampa was with the army as a black smith and veterinarian with them. My Gramma was born during a stop in Africa as they travelled. in Pretoria so we grew up seeing pictures that had been saved of her and her family when they were kids. My Grampa was born in Scotland to a large family of 13 kids and this is why my Mom was so interested in the history of the part of the world so many of the books she read were about England Ireland and Scotland. My youngest brother has started a record of our family history. My Grampa was a young boy when he joined the navy to come to Canada his ship was the pt Barnum I think that was the name and it was hit during the Boer war which he was involved in with this ship . When he came to Canada they landed and he worked in the coal mines this is when he started to have trouble with his breathing and then got out and came to the city where we live with his friend and was working on one of the crews that cleared the land for the roadway that leads from our city and now where my second youngest brother has made their home. My youngest brother has contacted people who had relatives also on the ship that my Grampa served on and he is looking up lots of history on the family and their lives. So interesting he is having a chance to share my Gramps history and finding out things that we did not know before. So so many things from so long ago

Our park is very quiet now not too many people there but the water is looking so clear and the reflection of the trees in the water is so pretty. Not as many trees has changed color this year so far as last year when most of the trees at that time were changed and many of the trees were already bare. Wonder if it means that we will have a later winter not sure but the leaves are changing and fall almost after they have turned their pretty colors. So many leaves on the ground now. Sitting along the water the other day feeling the leaves dropping onto our sweaters pretty how they float down one at a time like a shower and so beautiful. Wishing you a wonderful day still raining here but yesterday was so much warmer is was to go up to 29 yesterday not quite that hot but very warm today a nice fresh breeze best wishes . Holly

Hi @Minnie's knees I am sure your grand children are going to have a wonderful time on Halloween and one of the things that was always so much fun. They are at a nice age and still have fun with the excitement of these things. Nice that you are helping they will remember the time you have all spent together for a long long time. I remember all of the time with my Grandparents and how much we all did together. I miss her so much she was wonderful so was my Grampa and so important to the years of our lives together. When my brothers girls were small we used to help with their door to on Halloween left work a little early and then they took them out for their candy. I used to also make costumes for them my sister in law did not sew so for the first few years they went out they were dressed as pumpkins she bought the kit and I sewed.

My husband and I thought enough pumpkins so we went out and bought stuff and made them a different costume. One the youngest went out as a black cat and she loved swinging her tail it was stuffed so she thought it was fun and the oldest was a witch bought her a pattern and sewed lots of nice memories so many memories and so happy we were a part of all of it. My husband and were not able to have kids of our own so the children in our family were like ours spent lots of time with them and made them lots of things. Happy you are having time to enjoy your grand daughters they will remember the time you shared for all of their lives. Very precious time and how much they must love you so much. Holly

Hello Holly @lavender

I hope that you and your husband enjoy your lunch today.

That was a wonderful story about your your Grandpa and your family history. It is always lovely to learn about our own family history and appreciate what those in our families have lived through.

My family on both sides were born in Ireland in two small villages in County Kerry, so easy to trace my roots.

It s lashing rain here at the moment and windy today.

I meet my friends for our usual Wednesday lunch meeting and then a bot of grocery shopping for dinner. Making stuffed peppers in the pressure cooker, a real winter warmer. And then out to play bridge at 7:15- 10:15 pm.

Resting and icing the knee before I start getting the dinner ready.

Take care and enjoy your day,
Cathie

@marmora
Hi Cathie I hope your weather gets better and the rain stops. I hope you enjoy your lunch out with your friends today such a nice way to spend time with them and have fun together. My brother plays bridge I never have but when living at home we used to play rummy together with my parents and my brothers. Had a lot of fun just felt bad when having to ask for cards from them as usually meant you might win. Nice time with them though and played after supper couple of times a week together.

My husband is good at most card games, understands sports which I do not understand very well and plays chess something I have no idea about but he enjoys them.

My brother Gregs wife (my sister-in -law ) and her family are from England but her Mom was born in Ireland and the family grew up in Ireland. My sister-in-laws Mom who is really nice love to talk to her was born in Ireland and often goes back to see family the way she talks about her visits and how much she enjoys herself there makes me think Ireland would be a beautiful place to see. Next trip after my niece has finished her teaching schooling she is taking my niece back home with her to meet the family and she will have a nice time with her as she would be fun to travel with.

My Dads family his family on both his Dads and Moms side (my Gramma and Grampa) were all born in Canada and from families that had farms. Lots of relative most I have never met as they were much older when I was small but so many stories of the things they did. My Dads Mom my Gram could put on a meal for lots of people all were welcome and she was an amazing cook.

The houses that they had lived in before I was born were quite large but the house that I remember much smaller but even so she could fit in more then 30 people all placed comfortable us kids and my older cousin sat in a little room next to the dining room nice for us special at a kids table and my cousin who was more then 10 years older sat with us.

If someone dropped in she could always find a place to sit them and she cooked everything huge turkey. hams everything always more then enough to feed all that came and her baking was so good. My cousin his name was Scott and has since died was the one that kept things exciting as he was pretty big for the kids table but he was someone I loved to see he was lots of fun. I thought he was wonderful only saw him on special holidays so looked forward to him coming.

Years ago my aunt wrote a book for all in the family on the history of our family. She always knew who was having a birthday and what type of day it was when they were born . She gathered it all together and wrote it all down and the history as well of the the families that were part of ours and such a precious thing hoping one day to have a copy of my own.

My aunt who is my Dads only sister died during the month of December the year before my Dad and my husbands sister and her husband so with out her taking the time to record what she knew from stories told to her by my Gramma and Grampa and aunts of my Dad and Aunt( his sister) the history may have been lost. Girls in our family are not common most of the babies born were boys . I am the only girl in a family of 5 kids 4 boys. My Dads family was 3 boys with one girl my Aunt although one baby that was female died at a very young age, My Aunt had three kids 2 boys one girl but seems only one girl to each family. My brothers have 4 girls between their families and one brother had 2 boys so it went the other way when their kids were born. Interesting to see where you came from and the things in common from generation to generations that you find out. Hopy your knee is making things easier for you Holly

Hi Today we went for breakfast on the spur of the moment and had a nice time. The food is so good and their prices are very fair nice friendly atmosphere and so comfortable to go to. Wanting to buy a birthday card for my brother who has his birthday this Saturday and found the perfect one that says it all and so perfect for the things that I wanted to say in his card. Then add my own words as I always do to say my own things for him to.

We decided to go to vote today for the upcoming city election and today advance polls were open at the senior center just a few doors down from the park and the place where the old bowling alley that we used to bowl at used to stand. My husband was such a good bowler and it was nice for him to get out. He broke his wrist one year at work which made it harder to bowl with that arm but when the bowling alley was torn down and the new one was opened further away he found it was not the same bowling there so now just go occasionally.

We found a parking spot and went inside so many people such a nice thing to see as our percentages for election turnout is not always as high as hoped for. Inside the door going to line up thought I heard someone talking to me lots of people. Just getting ready and standing in line someone walked up to us and called my name.

It was one of the boys that went to school with my brothers and me in public school and felt nice that he had remembered me. He is running in the election for our city council and wanted to see how things were going he was waiting for a lady that he had brought to vote and while waiting we talked so nice. People change but the important things about people do not change. We are still who we were whether we are taller or have gain weight or whatever the things that matter do not change as we age .

When we were small we attended a nice public school together he remembered my family and had visited my Mom recently campaigning for his place on council if he was running in our ward I would have been proud to give him my vote but our ward is on the other side of the city. He grew up in our city and from the same values that I grew up with kids when we were small did the same sort of things for fun kick the can when it got dark and rollerskating on the sidewalks with the type of skates that you clamped on your shoes and carried a key to use to keep then from falling off , walking down to the park by our school to go ice skating in the winter hide and go seek and so many things . We had a little circus in our backyard one summer the kids in the neighborhood all dressed in their Halloween costumes that they put together from stuff saved and fun to watch now we were all so small and my parents took a movie of all of us. Time goes so fast thinking when you are little you are older then you actually were and we were so young. Simple times of growing up wish things were always so simple now.

Families where we lived were usually larger and kids we knew had brothers or sisters that my brothers had in their classes to. Times were for a kid much simpler and although we grew up to be responsible people we had so many good times along our way.

The school that we went to for grades from kindergarten to grade six was built just after the war and named Victory school it is still standing where it stood when I was a little girl and we were comparing things that we remembered going there .

Our school was not a private type school a regular public school but the entrance ways for boys and girls were on opposite sides of the school boys went in one door girls another. I have often talked to my husband Jim about this and he thinks it is strange why would they do this never thought much about it but above the doors carved in the cement is boys entrance girls entrance. Not a strict school so never understood the reasoning just did it.

My friend was laughing with me about the reasoning and he said he wondered if they were afraid that girls and boys would make friends strange that when we got into school we all sat together in our classroom boys and girls all together so no idea why this happened.

The front of the school where the older grades 3 to 6 went had a grassy area between the two playgrounds. There was a stair case that ran from the playground up to the side door of the school and a banked area that had grass.

The bank of grass was off limits and none of would even dream of climbing the banked area as the threat would be a detention if caught. No one went on this area and now driving by the banked area has a slide and other things on it that kids can play on how times have changed . We were laughing about how this piece of land was such a no no and now part of the playground.

Funny how you remember these things for so long so many years ago since public school and we were only 10 years old when we moved on to the next grades for 7 and 8 grades. The junior high school we attended was built the same year we left our public school and the talk at the time was that as it had been built on land that was under water they always said that one day it would eventually sink down again and the kids that grew up during that time kept an eye out always expecting one day the school we went to would be underwater he mentioned this and we laughed again. It has been 46 years since I left Victory school and yet even with all of the years that have passed how familiar it was to see my friend from those days and how nice to have the chance to talk again. This world we live in is not as large as we think some times sometimes it is a small world. Holly

Had a chance to talk to a friend of mine while purchasing my brothers card today and she wanted to talk about how my knee was doing said that lots were asking and she would pass on what she could to them about how things for us were going. Told her about my upcoming surgery and she wished me the best she knew how much trouble my knee was having before our store closed and how hard it was becoming but said she thought should be proud of how I managed during the whole thing. She wished my husband and I a nice Christmas and hoped to see each other before that time

It seems that we see so many of the people we worked with my husband met one of our friends yesterday she is now working in the sister company to our store that closed and how many kind wishes we have been given for all to go well for us and saying they are thinking about me during the surgery that I will have . How many people we meet along our way through out our lives and how many we make friends not always they type of friends you see all the time but friends just the same. Many of our friends from work have been friends for more that 30 years and although we did not socialize outside of work other then things like showers get togethers for tupper ware parties little get togethers and Christmas parties which we all enjoyed together they are still part of our memories some more then others but so many nice people. Wonder who we will see tomorrow. Holly

@lavender I love your posts!! They bring back some of my childhood memories and how much things have changed over all these years. And how small the world can be when we meet people that knew our parents from when they worked. Some of the stories being very funny.
Thank you for sharing them.

@lavender Thank you for your sweet post. My grandchildren are very special to us. Your time with your nieces has given you wonderful memories. I'm sure they love and appreciate everything you have done for them. I wish I had time to sew costumes. But this year we bought their costumes with so much going on. I love your stories about your family and growing up. You have a great way of writing.

Hi @appaloosa girl It was nice to receive your post and thank you for your kindness. I think the things that make life worthwhile are the things you do and the things we carry along with us our memories make us the people we are. Learning along our way as we go and people who along our path helped to make these memories with us.

Looking back I think it was such a nice time to be a kid and sometimes you do not realize that we also helped to make memories for others to. So lucky to have had my parents and my four brothers we all got along. hard to see changes along the way as we age so do the ones we love and friends and sometimes hard to get a grip on the changes these things make in the way our lives flow along.

But so many wonderful things have happened along the way to my husband is wonderful and we were talking today about the first time we dated. He asked me out for lunch one day at work and we went for lunch the next day.

Just a quiet few minutes but we were surrounded at this was where everyone went if they were buying their lunch. I had a club sandwich my first one and he had a hamburger very innocent but we had a lot in common as we found along the way and arriving at home that day it seemed every one knew.

my aunt had been shopping in the mall and had phoned everyone thinking this was nice to see us eating together and after going back to work the talk was going around that they might need to plan a shower for us maybe we should get married. I was only 18 so not ready for hat yet a little overwhelming for both of us with the crowd and not after a first lunch together. We were both kind of shy and not ready for the attention this first lunch brought just a lunch but so many people were happy as we were so much the same.

Then we started to go to the show together which was something both of us loved to do and then now years later we have just celebrated our 33 year wedding anniversary. Funny how things work out. My Dad was very protective of me and when I was asked out by a boy at school the condition was that being only in grade 8 my Dad would drive us to the dance and come back when it was finished. A bit of a walk that time of the night and he was not comfortable just asking if I could go was hard my first time. I talked to this guy a few years ago he was shopping with his kids and he told me that he thought it was nice that my Dad took time to drive us as he felt it meant he cared . Looking back realizing how much my Dad did look out for me he was very quiet in the way he did it but know as my husband tells me he knew when he met him he was just trying to make sure that no one would do anything to hurt me I was very young then. Missing my Dad so much some memories are not easy to remember

Memories some hard to remember sad times of loss of people who were so important but so many memories that make you smile and times that made us all into the people we are . Each day has some kind of memory we make them every day and taking the time to think about it hoping that these steps along the way are never forgotten they are fun to look back at. Hoping you have a nice day and as my Mom always used to say something special in your day that makes you smile and feel nice. Holly

Sitting tonight with my husband and watching one of my favorite movies. "Three men and a baby" love this movie and do not get tired of watching it.

This week was supposed to be the date for the release of the new Murdoch mysteries series on dvd not available in Canada yet hoping it will come soon this is one of our favorite shows to and filmed near our home just a few hours from our city. Historical stories one was filmed in our city in one of the older homes up by our hospital and interesting to see how they have the props so authentic costumes and things that were used during the era that the stories are set. My niece said that another was set in the area around the university where she goes to for her schooling to become a teacher. Hoping it is available soon .

Down a few doors from us the family that lives there has three huskies. They are beautiful and so quiet they are light in color tan and cream very young love to see them when they are on their way for their walk their faces are lovely and they are very calm seldom bark just so pretty. Nice to get to see them my brother in law my husbands brother had his own husky dog he lived in the Yukon with his family . His husky dog had one blue eye and one brown eye lovely dog. A man was walking in our park one day he had three huskies and now wondering if he is the same man that is now our neighbor . Busy day tomorrow so getting to bed a bit earlier and now watching our movies wishing all a good nights sleep Holly

Hi @Minnie's knees I am sure your grand daughters will love their costumes. The first costumes that I made were from a panel that had a pumpkin stamped on it just a few seams to sew and then all set to go . The year that I made my nieces their costumer was the year that my Gram died and I used to take the sewing as finished to show her how things were coming along she like to see what I made and this was something I wanted her included in she looked forward to seeing how they were coming along first time other then the pumpkins I had never made a costume from a pattern before never sewed something like this. The hardest part of the sewing was getting them to try them on trying to make sure that they were not too long so that they would not fall or trip on the costumes so trying to keep them from getting caught on the pins while the youngest tried to use her tail to show people she was a cat. Four years as various forms of pumpkins so we thought might be nice to do something different for them. This was the first time I made costumes other then pumpkins but had fun doing them they wore these for a few years and then no longer went out. Happy I made them but so many costumes that you can buy I sold costumes in my toy dept when I had it and fun to see all of the new Halloween stuff come in. The time spent together is always so important and the time you share is a memory they will keep. Holly
