THR Hippity Doo Dah!<

Yep, I’m afraid knees do suffer from pre op gait & post op changes... they get very irritable... my unoperated knee is far worse than my new hip at the moment... hoping all these knees will settle x

Both of my knees were really sore and swollen after the first surgery ladies- worse than the hip, especially the one on the non operated side. Significant at my hospital where they never mention ice for hips was the woman who'd had a knee replacement (and RA and was obese) was the only time I ever saw an icing machine.

:wave:Carriemay. Just barely over one week out from having your new hip implanted! I hope the doc doesn't give you a hard time with your meds and that you keep working on your patience muscles...
Also hope poor knee eases soon.
Healing mojo coming at you.:loveshwr:

Hoping your knee is a bit better today. I was surprised that my non operated leg, knee swelled too. Guess all that inflammation has to go somewhere. Your waterproof bandage sounds wonderful! That would have been nice. Happy Friday!

I wish I could hide this message from Sarah but slept through 6 hours last night. (Shhh!) I was thinking how interesting it would be to calculate how much sleep I have missed over the last 5 years. My cuddle blanket seems to have become a trigger to sleep. As soon as I pull it up around my shoulders I am gone. Every day I feel more confident that my OA pain is gone. I think I have been a bit reluctant to say that in case it proves untrue and the realization destroys me. I did deal with what they called "adjustment disorder" and a bit of PTSD after my life changed 5 years ago so I may have a bit of psychological work to do on myself as I claim my life back.

I was pretty nervous about the effects of surgery on my knee. The original break was at the top edge of the tibia and as a result I had a lot of scar tissue. I had a lot of scar tissue removed about 18 months after the break but I still can't straighten my leg and it does get painful periodically so I know there is more in there. I had planned on dealing with that in about a year. Initially, I thought I had made a lucky escape with knee pain not being too horrible after surgery. That has changed since yesterday so I am a bit frustrated. Walking is painful and feels quite precarious. The knee also feels week and on the verge of locking up. Very hopeful I can settle this down with icing. Any advice would be very welcome as I don't want it interfering with my hip recovery again!

Trouble is @ Carriemay60 the first week is a honeymoon as the effects of the drugs, antinflammatories were still helping the knee. I’ve found the same.. my knee keeps locking so I’m babying that more than the hip!! arrgghh! Hope yours settles down soon xx

Well, bless your heart! :roseshwr: Seriously, I am happy for anyone who sleeps! I'm coming to the conclusion that my meds are affecting my sleep. I am not so uncomfortable that I should be this restless. So I think something else is going on.

Of course, if my doctor doesn't get my refill today, I may find out over the weekend. Aaarrrggghhh!

Hi @Carriemay60 . You mentioned bird of paradise flowers, when I lived in Australia I had a huge clump and they made wonderful cut flowers, lasted for ages. But I couldn’t grow tulips there.

I think one consolation for the chilly sunless weather we have had here in England lately is that it has been good for the spring flowers longevity. I planted out some daffodils I had started in pots as they started to bloom weeks ago, and they are still going. Plus our magnolia tree has some blossom still after 6 weeks, hanging in there despite very strong winds.

Sorry to hear about your knee, and that of other hippies, you have special factors, but I have to say the only pain I have after 4 months is in the knee, not the hip. I’m hoping that for all of us it is related to hip recovery and will pass.

I laughed at your Hallelujah, I did guess without emoji, it was definitely a hallelujah moment for me too. Followed by a Holy Mololy moment when I found I had badly overdone the remedies.

I switched to my wheely walker after a "feeling sorry for myself nap" this morning. Doing a bit of walking, I realized I could keep my old style one off the floor for one stride so decided to give it a try. I did about 40 steps on the rolly without putting too much weight on it and took some very good heel/toe strides with a flow I haven't had in a very, very long time. My husband was on the phone with our daughter and yelled out "you should see your mother walking!!" :egypdance: I iced right after so no complaints yet but then I haven't moved yet again either

I can feel some fluid building on my darn knee. It's a pity THR is so hard on our knees. We need trouble with knees like a hole in our head right now. I am not able to take anti inflamatory @Hoppy Nanny.

Again it's early days ladies! My swelling and general discomfort didn't start straight away particularly after my first THR. I agree with @Hoppy Nanny the drugs and general euphoria keep you going fairly happily for the first couple of weeks. But it will pass! Not as soon as we hope, but once you're on the move @Carriemay60 even only a little I'm sure you'll soon feel the difference. Onward and upward!

I have caught myself a few times while sitting in my chair momentarily thinking something like, "I'll just jump up and do..." It's quite odd until my brain kicks in and reminds me that there a few steps to even getting out of the chair! :heehee:

I hope I don't too have a big a downward dip @Hoppy Nanny

Congratulations on your one week anniversary! It sounds like you are progressing really well. That ice cream sounds delicious. Let us know when you do get some.
Re the rollater. I had a home health Nurse and physio the first 3 weeks. My physio told me I was ready in week 2. I was concerned but it made such a difference. I too love how it has the little seat that has a lid you can put so much stuff in. I also would lay my computer on top or food and wheel it to where I sat. I still use it occasionally. A friend lent me hers. I like that there are 2 brakes on the handles to lock it as needed. Its a great little walker.
Hope you get to use it soon. It made mobility that much easier for me.
I did have my shower outside today and yes the neighbors can't see me though they maybe can but I can tell no one is home. ha ha. Its controlled from in the house and is attached to a garden hose pumping out warm/hot water. I love it. I don't need the commode to sit on anymore so did it standing. I guess soon I can use the shower in the tub again but I may never go back to inside...just joking.
You are doing amazing. just take it easy. I and others overdid it many times without even realizing it.
Have a great weekend!

Happy one week Anniversary!!
That rollator sounds fab... think we call it ‘a walker’ over here...
Glad it’s proving its worth... once you get ‘heel/toe’ walking it really helps the muscles to start working the right way @Carriemay60.
I can’t take anti inflams either but the hospital put them in the cocktail of drugs they give you pre & post op (or mine did) & boy do they work on the knee! But I won’t use them because of my asthma...

I’ve been surfing the kitchen worktops whilst making dinner ... just one or two steps without the crutches... it makes you feel like the possibility of walking unaided is not far away...

My knee needs to be replaced @Carriemay60 ... it is on the unoperated side...they say in 6 months but not sure I’m going to be ready for that!

Loving the sound of that outside shower @lotusbuds
What freedom!!! Not hot enough over in the UK yet!

Yay! Everyone seems to be moving on in their recovery... [emoji3590][emoji3590]

Happy one week anniversary @Carriemay60 You sound like you are doing great. It was right about the 7 day mark when my pain changed. I can’t take cortisone (allergic) So inflammation may have been why, or just taking less narcotics. I remember thinking why is this getting worse? Not linear in my experience, two steps forward, one back. I hope your knee starts behaving, moving ice down there will bring prompt relief. Guess it’s just gravity. Sending wishes for a relaxing weekend. ❤️

We had a outdoor shower at a resort once. 100% private and so nice. Definitely not warm enough here.

Here, we have several variations of a "walker". The "rollator" with four wheels and those have handbrakes, usually a seat and storage area. The "4 point" which is what you might see in the hospital more often because it is considered the most stable has 4 rubber feet. And then there are variations of that have 2 rubber feet and 2 ski feet or 2 wheels and 2 ski feet. You have to have some self control to use the rollator as it could move too fast for you and you'd look like one of cartoons with your feet clinging to one side of the cliff and your fingers clinging to the cliff across the canyon. :heehee: As my son pointed out yesterday, you need better balance to save yourself if anything goes wrong. It's much easier to work on a good gait though because the walker glides with you rather than having to lift one with feet along with you.

I did that bit yesterday and was pretty sore last night. Both on the side of the hip and into the groin. The groin pain is still with me a bit this morning so wondering if I should skip that type of walking today.

Hoppy, a bit of freedom in the kitchen sounds wonderful. My husband goes back to work this week so I may get in there with my son and sit with my cutting board a bit.

I know what you mean now regarding the rollator... i’ve a triangular one in my garage which was my mother in laws.. just in case!! I use a wheelchair when Im out ...to walk with as well as crutches... as you say it does help with gait. I can just see it rolling on down the canyon with you hanging in hot pursuit!!![emoji23][emoji23][emoji23].

Ive got a perching stool that I sit at the worktop & do prep for cooking... nice to have something just in case... it does help me feel I’m moving on just to do mundane jobs...how life changes!!![emoji51]

My daughter is 46 today (yikes) so going to an hotel for afternoon tea.. put my slap on & a pair of ballerina shoes...ooh for some nice high heels .. a thing of the past methinks [emoji20]x

Hope the groin pain settles today x

Oh a nice tea out sounds lovely! I really want to get out (especially for a Chinese meal and that ice-cream) but then realization hits me that I would have to endure getting in and out of the car and the car ride. Our city has just been voted the worst for potholes in Canada for the second year in a row. By the time they fix all the road break up from the winter here, it is starting again :headbang:
