THR Hip replacement after hip arthrosocpy

@Rdwolfe94 I'm not a medical person but from what I've seen around here that groin pain can stick around for a while. Also, if the pain got worse after starting exercise back up after taking a couple of weeks off I'm guessing it's telling you not to do it.

I think @CricketHip told someone on here now to try doing deep breathing and then a light massage to assist with getting the lymph system to wake up and help with some of that groin pain. I've tagged her so hopefully she'll check in later today.

Hi @Rdwolfe94 I understand your concerns with the groin pain. Mine hung around longer than I wanted to and it's so worrisome. I know Elf1 tagged me but first I'd like to know if you've noticed any swelling at this point?
I'm not sure MLD techniques would be very helpful but would be glad to tell you about it if you wish?

Sometimes it can help with inflammation and maybe that is what you have going on.
In any case, I think you are wise to pursue this with your Surgeon and Primary Care Physician.

@CricketHip my Surgeon just says everything is fine. My PCP has referred me to a Physiatrist. See Surgeon and Physiatrist both on Tuesday. Notice some swelling yes. My PCP put me on 600mg ibuprofen 3x a day with 1,000mg Tylenol 2x a day. I had all that medication. I have been only taking one 600 mg ibuprofen when the pain gets really bad and only take Tylenol PM every other night. Cannot wait until these appointments. I still have unresolved possible mesh issue from a hernia surgery and a failed hip scope. Now, I have had my hip replaced at 49 that did not resolve my pain. Very frustrated.

I'm so sorry you have the worry of the hernia mesh and the possibility of an issue with it. My husbands has had 3 separate hernia surgeries and it can be really tough to manage.

Good to hear that you will see your surgeon and the Physiatrist on Tuesday. If they concur that you need more time to heal and that things are swollen/inflamed, just tag me and I'll leave some MLD techniques for you.
Keep your chin up, it's still early days.. Good luck.!

@CricketHip 11 weeks I was hoping would not still be early days. When does it not become early days :) I have a massage stick from my running days that helps but just temporarily after I run it over the area. The worst part about the hernia surgery was that I never had a hernia when they opened me up but they still put mesh in me. ugh. Did you still have groin pain and pain around your incision at 11 weeks. I can do all my daily activities with little noticeable discomfort. I have pain after light exercise or when I lift my leg to me chest or bend over to pick something up. the pain runs around my incision and from the top of my hip flexor into my groin.

Think of it this way....it's likely you'll have that implant for many years to come.
Hopefully the rest of your life. So at only 11 weeks post op, IT IS early days. You're not even three months removed from a major surgery and full recovery takes a year, even up to two yrs, or longer, for some. Considering all that does it still seem odd to refer to this point in time as early days in your recovery?

Happy Thursday! I hope you're having a good week. Enjoy the day!

@Layla that makes total sense but I have honestly have seen many people have the anterior approach and are fine at this point but they are 20 years older and do not exercise at the level I did before my scope and replacement. I am very impatient:)

I've posted this one a few times this week. Shared by a member who heard it from her surgeon -

Look upon this operation as an investment in your future.
Look after it now and it will serve you well for years to come.

Be patient, good things still coming!

It's not uncommon to still feel groin discomfort and muscle tightness. I totally had that at 11 weeks.
Which was frustrating because I healed much easier with my other THR on the left.
It's very hard not to worry, but I hope you can try not to.
I take an anti inflammatory when I've had a hard week, but overall it's much improved now, at 17 weeks.
I think we had some very tight muscles in our thigh. I joke that the surgeon must have needed to use the Jaws of Life on me!

Hang in there, it does get easier and better.. with patience and time.

Just in case you are suffering with some residual swelling? I will leave you the MLD advice.. If nothing else it will help you to relax and drift off to sleep in the evenings.
If you can, try doing this in the morning and then right before you sleep at night. Which is helpful because you need to be in bed or on a flat surface to do this.
This can help with inflammation in the joint, too.

Take deep breaths.. deep, as in breathing in to a count of 5, or 3 or 4, whatever is best for you. hold it for another count of 5 then blow out completely, still using the count that's comfortable for you. A series of at least 6 of these could help get your excess swelling to move. To ensure you are taking proper deep breaths, place your hand on your naval and watch while taking in your breath, if doing this properly you should see your hand move up.
Do this whenever you feel up to it during the day or night. The more supine that you could get in the recliner or bed, the more effective this can be.. you have lymph nodes seated there in your groin and sitting up too much can cause a restriction of the lymph flow.

You can, after the breathing, place your hands lightly on your upper thigh, right where the crease is in your groin and lightly stroke upwards towards your naval.
I did this quite a bit post op and while it takes a while for the body to wake up and respond, it will, and it will help get things moving.
The reason this can help is because our lymphatic system doesn't use our cardiovascular system to help lymph fluids move.. no assistance from the heart pumping. Our breathing and our physical (muscular) movements keep it flowing.

Give it a try! It's a great relaxation exercise, also.

@CricketHip I will try the techniques. Here is the crazy thing. I am sleeping very well. I can sleep on either side or on my back and I actually feel better in the morning. The pain increases throughout the day. The symptoms are very similar to the symptoms I had with my labral tear prior to my hip scope. I am wondering if it is an iliopsoas issue although not related to the cup overage as it is showing ok on x-ray or maybe the hernia mesh is causing problems. Hoping the Physiatrist can figure it out on Tuesday or order some testing to rule things out.

What you are saying makes sense, doesn't it? I will be so very interested in what you hear on Tuesday.
It can't come fast enough, right?

@CricketHip right. I have been counting down the days. I actually typed out my 2 year nightmare and put it in the packet I fill out before I see him. I doubt he will read but I will summarize it to him when I see him if he does not read it.

I'm sorry you're struggling and feeling anxious. I hope you get some answers on Tuesday. We'll be thinking of you. Please let us know what you hear.
Prayers for your comfort and peace of mind.

Saw my Surgeon 12 week follow up today. He told me everything was fine and that I focus on the pain too much and worry about pain that is not there. I would love to be able to transfer the pain to him. Told him I was seeing a Physiatrist later. He told me that I need to quit seeking Dr.s because they were just going to do treatment that was going to make things worse. When I see him at my 6 month follow up and the pain is the same, I am going to ask him if he wants to refer me to a Psychiatrist. He makes me almost want to cancel my appointment with the Physiatrist. I am not a Dr. seeker or a med seeker. I hate taking ibuprofen and tylenol and go as long as I can without taking them. I feel he was out of line. Especially when his Nurse Practitioner told me before he came in that she though something was wrong with my hip flexor tendon.

"Excuse me", I'm sure that's what you felt like saying. How rude, insensitive and dismissive. Some of these surgeon's are definitely missing a sensitivity chip.

I'm really sorry you continue to struggle. I don't know that I'd cancel the appointment with the physiatrist as it may be interesting to hear his / her opinion and make a call afterward whether you feel it beneficial to schedule further visits. Isn't the appt with the physiatrist already scheduled for today?

@Layla it is. I am going at 245. Also during the appointment, when I asked if it was not the hip, what was it. He said, "who knows with you, basically, implying that I am a headcase. It took me off gaurd or I would have said what is that suppose to mean. I am suppose to see my Surgeon is 12 weeks, are you saying that I should seek a different surgeon or did you mean further appointments with the Pyhsiatrist?

I was talking about the physiatrist. Deciding after today's visit whether you like the person and feel they may be able to help you. Everyone is going to look like they have a halo over their head compared to your ill-mannered surgeon. I can't believe he makes rude comments like that. So disrespectful.
I think next time he makes a thoughtless comment you should say "Ouch, guess I wasn't expecting that, your comment feels rather insensitive, is there a reason for that?" See if the cat gets his tongue, or he has a rude comeback.
I'm guessing the later since he sounds like a creep. One more of those type of visits and I'd report him to someone and search for a replacement.
I'm sorry you had to endure that.
