THR Hip replacement after hip arthrosocpy

Can I continue to ice 45-60 minutes everyday up to 1 year?
45 - 60 minutes several times per day for as long as you need this. There are no set timescales for this recovery.
Should I continue to use my sock assister?
For as long as you need to. Many hippies take months to be able to put on socks and shoes. Try bending down from a seated position to do this. I have never been able to put a foot on the opposite knee to put on shoes and socks.
By using the assister and not bending my hip, will it cause it to heal stiff without flexibility in the future.
No - you will continue to regain flexibility even past the one year mark.
If my pain has not resolved after a year, what do I do?
It's a very long time between now and the one year mark. Focus on what you do accomplish and not the end goal. It will come and maybe before 12 months out.

It is going to be getting cold where I live soon. Did anyone do their walking post THR on a treadmill and is a treadmill a safe option or does it require to much use of the hips. Thanks.

Ive heard of members using it for walking but I am a klutz so...If you are feeling steady and confident that you wont fall...:bignono: and can mimic a Real Walk Gait...I can see it being helpful for inclimate weather.
Leaning forward and holding on and pushing your legs would be an unnatural and unhelpful way to use it.
I think I would have had to go to a mall or something, as I say, I'm a klutz and would not want to risk injury.

Need an opinion. Today is 8 weeks and I continue to get worse. Did go back to work today which I am sure made things flare up. I do have a desk job. Right now, I am taking 1200 mg of ibuprofen every 6 hours and 1000mg of Tylenol at 10am and 10pm is it normal to be taking these doses 8 weeks out and how long can I continue them without destroying my liver and kidneys. Don't see my surgeon until the 29th of this month. Still icing.

Also, I think I have overdone it with the elliptical, bike and walking. How much time off from those should I take to let things settle down before I resume those activities again?

Thanks, very frustrated that I am getting worse. No it is early but do not understand why I am getting worse.

:console2:

Start now by dropping all but the walking until....you feel better.
And dont walk for long distances.
You have been healing, my friend, and all of this activity is not agreeing with your poor traumatized leg.
I'm sorry you have most probably hit the ODIC...Overdid It Club.

I steered away from the NSAIDS and stuck with the real pain relievers, then transitioned to a Tylenol/Tramadol regimen.
Laying off of all the activity, icing, elevating and resting might alleviate the need for all of those meds.

Too much too soon. Poor @Rdwolfe94

@Mojo333, I do not have any pain meds this far out. I am just taking what I mentioned above. The tylenol seems to work better than the NSAIDS.

I can walk with a normal gait on the treadmill for 30 minutes. Is that too long. It comes out to about a mile and 1/2.

Just as a reference, I was feeling a little better and scheduled a leg/hip massage. She is very experienced and didn’t do anything crazy. Simply some muscle work, a little ROM on the hip with some slight stretching. Felt great during the massage and for hours afterward.....one day later my leg/hip is so sore.
As so many say on this forum, these hips can’t handle much until they heal. Hopefully in a day or two it settles back down a little.

It's probably going to take more than a few days for your pain to settle. In the meantime, remember that you are still in healing mode. You've gone back to work and that should now be considered your exercise. Stay off the treadmill for at least another month. No extra walking or exercise is needed. You'll get plenty of walking at your job, going to and from work, walking around the house and any other errands you might attempt. Ice and elevate as much as you can when you're home. Stick with just the Tylenol for pain. It usually works better than ibuprofen anyway and is not dangerous if you stay within the recommended dosages. That is: no more than 4,000mg in any 24 hour period, 1,000mg doses usually taken on a 6-hour schedule.

@Rdwolfe94 Hi! you asked me a question about my muscle soreness, which sounds as if it's in the same area as yours.
Mine has only recently calmed down.. I am still limiting quite a few activities, like walking for exercise or much PT when it is on the days that I work.
If I overdo things it increases in discomfort level. I also can get very stiff after lying down or sitting for a long period of time.

Since I didn't work today I took a nice walk, about a mile. I would have tried for a longer distance but was working in the house and climbed the stairs way too many times.
I do very gentle stretches for my quadriceps.. daily..

I'm not at 100% but am a lot better than I was at 8 weeks. I hope this helps..

I didn't answer you on Mainegirl1's thread, because I didn't want to hijack it. if you have any other questions, just tag me here on your page and I'll be "over" as soon as I'm online and see the tag.
I still ice nightly, and hope you are, too.

Good luck! It's still early in your healing journey.

@CricketHip it seems we have similar situations. Sitting for a long time, hurts in my hip flexor and anytime I raise my knee or do any cardio i.e. elliptical or bike, my thigh and hip flexor flare up. I have been walking on the treadmill with no incline and a normal gait. My math tells me you are exactly 6 weeks ahead of my surgery. The thing that is odd to me is that I always feel better in the morning and do not seem to be stiff in the morning.

@Rdwolfe94 I'm curious, did you have some of that type of discomfort prior to your procedure?
I did and I think it's just going to be a matter of time and remaining careful in my recovery going forward. Especially since I felt a strong need to return to work, being self employed.

Yes, I am about 6 weeks ahead of you and feel much better than I did at 8-9 weeks.
I would hazard a guess in that you are possibly doing too much activities during the day? I'm basing this on the fact that you say you feel better in the mornings.

I wish you the best in the coming weeks, the best thing you can do for yourself is to practice patience.

@CricketHip I did, I had groin pain and hip flexor pain that remains. However, I did not have the top of thigh pain I have when I lift my knee or flex my hip currently. I am not good at being patient but I have no choice at this point. Thanks for answering my questions.

Sure thing and you are welcome.. it's a fine line, you know? I think some of us went into surgery with weak muscles and a significant limp.. it takes time to get things back in order. Add to that, you've had two surgeries on that hip in less than a year.

Very true. The most frustrating thing for me is that I did not have a limp before surgery and do not now, but still have the same pain I had before surgery only worse with new pain in the thigh when doing the bike and elliptical. They thought my hip was the source of my pain due to the labrum not being repaired through the failed scope but I am not so sure now. I am starting to wonder if my pain is from the hernia mesh surgery I had 14 months ago when they put the mesh in me when I did not even a hernia once they opened me up. Plus, my Dr. told me I would be full speed ahead working out in they gym on the elliptical and the bike at 6 weeks. Not the case as I will be 9 weeks on Wednesday and am no better :(.

Hi @Rdwolfe94
If the bike and elliptical are causing you pain, please consider stopping both for now. If you're suspecting the pain you described is unrelated to your THR, contemplate consulting with your PCP. It seems your surgeon's estimation that you'd be full speed ahead on the bike and elliptical at six weeks post op is a bit ambitious. With two major surgeries over the last year and the latest only two months ago, you have a lot of healing to still happen. Be patient and take it slow. The pay off will be worth it.
I hope you have a nice week!

@Layla I am stopping all biking and elliptical for 2 weeks. See my Surgeon in 3 weeks (12 week mark). I agree, it seems he was a little ambitious. I actually see my PCP the same day after my Surgeon. My fear with something else is that it may be the mesh. I have not seen anything i.e. testing that can say if the mesh is the problem. I have had 3 surgeries in 14 months. If they cannot tell 100% or close for sure what is causing my pain, I am not having another surgery.

I am also glad you decided to drop all of that exercise.
Plenty of time to tone and strengthen further down the road.
It may be that you entered the Overdid It Club and that can take some time to come back from...
I do hope you don't have an issue from the hernia procedure.
Im sorry you are struggling and worried.
2 months out Really Is Early Days.
:fingersx: for lots of improvement!!!

Thanks @Mojo333, Can any of the medical advisors on here tell me what would be the best diagnostic test to view my groin i.e. ultrasound, mri, etc.?
