THR Hip Recovery

At only 6 days out, please don't stress about reducing your medication. When you start forgetting doses it is a sign you are ready to wean off them.

Good report from you today. Naps are always a good idea. Your routine sound good and your listening to your body as it heals. One day at a time. So proud of your progress. It ain’t easy... and this will get better is so important to hang onto... by summer you’ll just have a memory.. this will give you a better quality of life and that’s the main goal. And will last for many years to come. prayers for a successful full recovery ASAP.

I can feel progress every day which is good.

That‘s good! Early on I’d gauge progress by the week. I picked a day, it was a weekend day for me and I’d reflect back each week, on that day only, and realize I really was making progress.
Happy One Week Anniversary! I hope it’s a good day. :)

@Layla Thank you! That’s a good suggestion. I know eventually the progress will slow and I don’t want to get discouraged.

Day 7
Took oxy and tinzidine before bed. Slept well. Took an oxy again at 5 and slept till 9. I woke with a headache and it’s 11:00 and still have a headache. I took all my morning meds- tinzidine, stool softener, 2 ibuprofen, Tramadol, blood clot prevention. I don’t usually get headaches. I also feel kind of nauseous. I think I may take the med for it. This will be my first time since surgery taking the nausea med.

I‘m getting around really well and can walk without the walker but still use it or have it nearby. I’m icing and have my feet elevated.

Just curious about the headache and nausea. Thoughts?

I’m not a medical professional, but my first thought was to wonder whether you took the Oxy at 5:00 AM on an empty stomach?
Also, do you feel you’re staying adequately hydrated?
Have any of these meds been changed / added since you left your surgery site? Just clarifying for anyone else that may want to offer an opinion.

Check out the side effects on inserts that came with the meds and see which may cause headache. I believe Oxy can, but not sure it’s a common side effect.

Hopefully your headache eases quickly. If the same thing happens tomorrow, you may want to touch base with your surgeons office about adjusting meds.
I hope you feel better soon!
@Teresa17

@Layla Thank you for the feedback. Yes, the oxy was taken on an empty stomach. I feel I’m drinking enough water but I’m making a more conscious effort. I took an extra steroid and the nausea med. Had my son make me a half turkey sandwich. My headache is finally gone and I no longer feel nauseous. I’m feeling much better and more like myself!

@Layla How long before the groin pain goes away? I’m beginning to get concerned after reading about others having psoas issues. Before THR, I couldn’t lay on my back w my leg straight because of the pain. And sometimes when I would walk, I would get a hitch and would have to hop on my foot until I felt a pop/ release. From what I understood from the OS, this was my hip catching on the labral tear.

The pain isn’t near what it was, I can sleep on my back w my legs straight but I still feel the pain both sitting and lying down. Just concerned & hoping the issues been fixed. OS said it may be a while before the pain went away due to tendinitis. I don't really understand what that means.

Any clarifications?

I can't give you a time line @Teresa17 but I had the same issue with groin pain early. Since that was what led to my diagnosis as needing a THR I was very concerned. That pain along with all the others faded over time and were never an issue again.

@FCBayern Good to hear! Same with me, it was/is the groin pain that sent me on this journey. I feel the pain in the groin is what’s keeping me from getting dressed on the operated side and it’s concerning me. I just want to be DONE after this THR. I don’t want to start another round of drs trying to figure out the groin pain again. I received a hip injection several months ago and the pain went away, for a week. Best week ever!

How long before the groin pain goes away?

So hard to say because it’s such early days for you. The pain is understandable if you contemplate all that occurred underneath the surface, muscles were stretched, soft tissue was disturbed, and power tools were used. It was a “controlled” trauma and unfortunately there are varying degrees of pain that occur during the healing process.

My best advice is ice. Not sure how much of a fan you are, but I iced almost non stop early on. Wherever it hurt, I’d ice. Make sure to take your meds on schedule also. Hopefully when you woke today, it wasn’t a repeat of yesterday morning with the headache and nausea. :fingersx:

Happy Wednesday....I hope it’s a good one!

@Layla I woke up feeling great this morning! I took the oxy and tinzindine before bed but eliminated the 3:00 am oxy. I don’t think I need that one any more. I did the heel slides they showed me in the hospital. Last time I tried those last week it hurt too much so I stopped. Today it didn’t hurt.

I am also able to walk without the walker but I don’t stray far from it. Need to practice walking heel/toe.

The groin pain isn’t anything new, it’s the reason I went down this path. I’m just getting anxious that it’s not going to go away and I’ll be back to square one chasing the cause down. I ice almost non-stop and find it extremely helpful. It’s a challenge to ice in the crease of my groin but I try. I use a bag of peas in the groin area or the edge of an ice pack.

@Teresa17, I know my situation is different from yours but before surgery all my pain was in my groin. Since the surgery, I've had groin pain on and off since day two or three. Whenever it started up I would ice it and it would go away. I'd say it's been gradually decreasing over time, just like all the other pain (e.g. knee); now at day 27 I'd say it's not an issue unless I really overdo it. Glad to hear you woke up feeling good today!

@Sashimu That is pretty much my situation. Groin pain is/was my main complaint. Just do not want to go through all this and still have to deal w drs and groin pain. Glad to hear it eventually went away.

I too have knee and ankle pain. Its not bad and I think it’s still due to swelling.

Agree with above re groin pain which in my case it is aggravating rather than painful but definitely responds to a bout of ice treatment.Similarly I’m getting little knee tweaks occasionally and sometimes a little shin pain.

But I have walked ( on crutches ) for 1/2 hr on some uneven ground without any reaction to mention.I am icing mainly because it’s comforting amazingly.
I suppose it’s fair to say 4/5 weeks post op the aforementioned niggles are to accepted aspar for the course considering we have just had a mechanical joint inserted into our ‘super fit ‘ bodies.

I can see finding a suitable comfy ice pack is always going to be a challenge .
Hoping that the groin pain disappears ASAP.
Have a great and Comfy pain free Easter everyone.

Day 11
I’ve been doing really well until today I had a set back. The past few days I’ve started to feel more like myself. I’m able to walk without the walker or cane but I bring one along w me just in case. I made muffins the other day ( from a box) and made a simple entree.

Yesterday, I rested most of the day, went on the porch for a little while and went outside downstairs to visit w my hubby (we live in a pier and beam home). He stood in front of me just in case, I went slow up and down the stairs. I’m able to take a shower by myself but have hubby nearby just in case. I was feeling so good that I only took my morning and bedtime meds and skipped the other two times I was taking meds. My back started hurting pretty bad last night and it’s still hurting. I have an ice pack on it now. My knee still bothers me with pain/ swelling and I ice it non-stop.

Today I’m struggling even walking w a walker and I have a fever of 100. I’m not sure what that’s about. I think I was a little aggressive eliminating 2 med times yesterday. I’m just keeping my legs elevated, iced and resting today.

I feel like I’ve had a big set back. Is this normal? Any ideas on the fever?

Day 11 Evening

I iced, elevated, rested , did a load of laundry, took my meds and just took it easy today after my bad morning. I’m back to feeling good and my fever is gone. So glad, it was really a rough morning! I don’t feel that I’ve been pushing myself that hard so the setback this morning really confused me. Glad to be feeling good again!

Hello @Teresa17
I’m sorry you had a rough morning. Thankfully the ice /elevation and rest helped. I sounds like you’d benefit awhile longer with the meds. It’s still very early days and you will have ups and downs. Check out the Reality of Recovery scribble at the bottom. It helps put it into perspective and hopefully eases any worries.

As for the fever - A low grade fever (less than 101.5 F) during the first week after surgery is a normal response by the body to the stress of surgery. It is most often caused by inflammatory response to the tissue injury sustained during surgery. After the first week if you have a fever that lingers for more than a few days, or if a fever over 101.5 F begins several days after surgery, it's recommended that you contact your physician to rule out the possibility of anything serious.

I‘m glad you’re feeling good again too! Wishing you and yours a very Happy Easter! :)

Hi Teresa17, I’m about 5 days behind you and I’m still having the nagging degree or two of fever also. I usually run a little cool, so it doesn’t even seem like it to others, but it makes me feel lousy and just hot all over! It went away for about a day so I thought I was past that, but it came back today. I don’t think it’s so bad on the whole though...I’m hoping it’s just a normal part of recovery as it seems from what I’ve been reading here. :)
