Thanks, @Pumpkln for the input on CPAP. Happy to hear you have adjusted to it and sleep better. It seems daunting to have to adjust to it. But I'm getting ahead of myself at this point.

@BBCG I know that AFIB can be triggered by sleep apnea, and AFIB can cause stroke. I am on a lifetime blood thinner to prevent stroke. I don't know about high blood pressure, but snoring can be one symptom of sleep apnea.

Check with his doc about a sleep study.

I love how it helps me sleep. If I lay down without it I feel sort of like I'm gasping for air. With it I breath so smoothly and I'm so much more relaxed which helps me sleep better-except when my husband is snoring! But I do sleep so much better-don't wake up as much at all and I sleep deeper.

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea in early June of this year and have been using CPAP since then. I agree with
@tjcteacher. I love it for all the reasons she stated above. I took it to the hospital and used it for my RTKR last Tuesday. :)

Thanks @birdinger and @tjcteacher. Another question. Did either of you have daytime sleepiness and, if so, did CPAP relieve that? Also was it difficult to adjust to the mask fitting?

@mamazipp I am another member that also uses a CPAP and have for over 10yrs at this pt. I never thought I snored or snored badly, but I was tired during the day. My daughter thought she heard a wild animal outside the window one night and woke her dad and said dad you need to shoot it, my husbands reply is I can't it's your mother, after I heard that from then I knew I needed a sleep study done, I have a severe case also, I took my machine with me to the hospital and even if I lay down for a nap I use it, when I don't, I fall asleep, but shortly wake up, asleep wake up, and the cycle continues as I must stop breathing and awake myself.
My only draw back is it's made me a side sleeper, sleeping on my back seems almost impossible as the mask seal breaks loose and that will wake you up also, but when I sleep on my side I am able to retain the seal.
I believe a lot of mine is caused by genetics and my being over weight probably makes the problem worse, but my mother was a bean pole and snored, her father was really bad and not over weight either.
If it's something you need, you will find relief with using it.
As for day time tiredness it's a lot better than the days prior to the cpap machine.

Also, if you don't care for the mask there is nasal pillows and such, my pressure is high on mine so I find nasal pillows uncomfortable and drying of the nose tissue, I also sleep with my mouth open a lot of the time, so with a nasal pillow that becomes interesting as you get this weird cycle when your mouth is open.
Yes, sleep apena can cause high blood pressure and other health issues.

My pressure is pretty low (8) and I am not a mouth breather so I am able to use the nasal pillow mask. It is less restrictive. I have noticed that my daytime sleepiness is less and I need fewer "naps" during the day. You may have to try several masks before you find one that is right for you. I sleep so much better now and am happy that I was able to benefit from the CPAP therapy!

Thanks all for the perspectives. I'll find out the results of my sleep study this week.

@mamazipp

I don't have any experience with a CPAP or apnea, but I do have daytime sleepiness. More like exhaustion! You are months ahead of me, but I just wanted to say that healing and pain meds are doing this to me. Maybe this could be true for you still too!! Good luck with your sleep study!!

(Just wanted to say that I love your new picture too!)

My friend I mentioned to you before (the undiagnosed sleep apnea) had started napping 2-3 hours a day and was always sleepy/tired. With her BiPap, she's back to the energetic, positive person she always was. She had gotten to the point of staying home most of the time. Right now she's gearing up to do emergency response in Haiti (she's 64). I'm convinced correcting her sleep apnea saved her life.

Aww thanks @TML and @ACDCJen, re my avatar. That's so nice to hear. It's hard for me to find any photo of me that I like. Having such nighttime insomnia I end up doing things like changing avatars, etc.
And, Jen, didn't you also change yours as well? I like it!

@Sheilac that's fascinating about your friend, and that she got all her energy back. A very happy story about sleep apnea for sure. How encouraging.

I also have sleep apnea and use CPAP. I wear a nasal pillow. I found it much more comfortable than the face masks. It did take a little while to get used to, but now I don't want to sleep without it.

@Ronsgirl so many people use CPAP. I'm a bit shocked how common sleep apnea has become. What is a sleep pillow?

Agree, your new pic looks great. You do not at all look your age, you look younger than me. Great pic.

I sleep next to a cpap. My husband. Took him a while to adjust, but it's been over 10 years now and he gets quality sleep, without the constant disruption of apnea events.

If the study recommends it, you'll be fine.

This is the mask that I use. "Nasal pillow" is the part that sits under your nose and delivers the pressurized air.
