TKR Had a difficult time, feeling better<

Be sure and let us know how the study goes.

I am so dreading the sleep study, but it is only one night.
Alas since I retired from my job the retirement benefits here are pretty bare. Except for the fairly generous post op PT, once that's done, and that was basic, I quickly maxed out my covered pt benefit. I have self paid and am not against self pay but need the right person. A friend with a post hip today suggested her kinesiolgist, at the same place. I may try that.
I got rid of all of my post op gear, so no cane, no walker, no toilet riser, nada. But a gait analysis or kinesio is a good idea.
Before I found bone smart I was in rehab for 4 weeks, and had PT every day for 6 days a week, and OT as well, every day. I'm the poster child for more is less!
I'll check in after I recover from this sleep study. Now I gotta go eat, pack my overnite bag and get going.

I wish you were here in town. I'd have you see my PT. He videotapes while you walk on the treadmill, loads it into the computer, and, using his software, examines you walking on the screen. He examines the effectiveness of your shoes in your alignment also. It's pretty amazing to watch. They also have a therapist that will help with any goals an individual has: I've signed up for 5 overall conditioning sessions next Spring with him, after my 2nd knee is done. I feel safer with him working up an individualized exercise plan than a trainer at my health club. Anyway, hope you can forget your knee tonight and get some rest!

TML, your PT sounds like a read professional! You are lucky to have someone like him near by. I wish all PT's followed the BS way and were up to date on their technology. It would make life so much better for so many.

I hope your sleep study went well. And that you get a long nap today!

@TML your PT sounds amazing. Hmmm...Colorado isn't THAT far from Victoria!.....

Sleep study was weird. The person who hooks you up was a wonderful, knowledgeable, cheerful person. I was connected with a million wires and in a hospital bed with bed rails up.......strange flashback, right? My mind was on overdrive, cause who goes to sleep at 11pm? Not me. Then my knee ached so I had to call her so I could get Tylenol out of my bag. Eventually I fell asleep and was awakened at 6 to get unplugged. Yup, came home and slept a few hours. I'll get the results in a few weeks.

Glad you got thru that ok. Why were they wanting to do that? I know my husband has done a few, he sleeps with a cpap. Are they thinking you have sleep apnea??

Get some real rest now that you are home

@dianehelen yes, to evaluate for sleep apnea. Although I'm not sure I'd want CPAP. Does your hubby feel better having it?

@TML I'd love to come to Colorado. I'm in need of a trip, it's been so long.............
Where in Colo do you live?

A suburb south of Denver called Centennial. Come quickly, though, my next TKR is in a few weeks!

Does your hubby feel better having it?
OMG YES!

He has had snoring problems for years and breathing and nasal issues. He finally did the sleep study about 10 years ago and was dx with severe apnea. Took him a long time to get used to the cpap but, once he did, now he can NOT sleep without it. He has one machine here and one at the beach. When he went to Indianapolis in May with some friends for the race, he brought it with him for the hotel. I have to sleep with earplugs because I hear the air leaving on his outbreaths, but its ok. He gets much better sleep with it

That's good to hear. I hope mine doesn't come to that cause I've heard the masks are really hard to get used to.

@mamazipp, but think how wonderful I'd be to be able to breathe and sleep all night! Without enough sleep, everything is a chore!

My best friend developed depression, lack of energy and just slowly became "old" last year. Then she developed atrial fib. I dreaded being around her because she changed from a positive, active and hilarious person to a negative grouch who wouldn't pay attention more than a few minutes. She had a couple of minor car accidents and became such a distracted driver I wouldn't ride with her. To make a long story short, she finally got a sleep study (the neurologist she was referred to to check for early onset Alzheimer's ordered it). Well! She had severe sleep apnea and was getting NO REM sleep at night. After just 3 months with her BiPap, she's like her old self again. I didn't think she would do well with the mask (very touchy about how she sleeps-- wouldn't even wear s ponytail to bed because it was "too tight"). She loves the way she feels now and never once complained about the mask.

I just tell you this cause I saw first hand how years of sleep deprivation can insidiously take over your life. Much better to catch it early than wait too long like she did.

And it's something you don't realize you're doing unless someone tells you.

Wow, that is an amazing story @Sheilac! I, too, was diagnosed with AFib a year and a half ago, while traveling in Israel, ended up in the ER and basically cut my trip short because I was so freaked out. I know what toll it took on me, psychologically for many, many months. I was obsessed with it! It was my biggest worry prior to going for my TKR. I'm much calmer now, but that is what led to the sleep study, as sleep apnea can be a contributor.
I'm pretty stable now, knock wood, by the way.

Mamazipp and Sheilac, thanks for this discussion... Now I'm curious if stroke can be a side effect of sleep apnea? My husband has had sleeping trouble for years, too, but we've not thought to do a sleep study for him... I do wonder about the issues he has and whether sleep is a relevant factor?

I have sleep apnea and use CPAP, once you get used to it, you will not ever want to go without. I feel so much better, improved and deeper sleep.
Now I'm curious if stroke can be a side effect of sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea can cause your blood pressure to go up, which is a stroke risk. No harm in having him do a sleep study.
The apnea board is a good source of information, from your fellow CPAPers.
If you are not a mouth breather, you can use nasal pillows which are much lighter and less invasive.
Good luck, it just takes time,
