Wow. Power walks! I'm still so slow a turtle could pass me.

What kind of nursing did you do before you retired?

@sheliac
Started in nursery/postpartum, then moved to NICU, then after NICU burnout went into Psychiatry. Loved that! Did all sorts of Psych nursing things until one year ago. Reluctantly decided it was time to go........leave it to the young nurses who were driving me a bit batty, and the increasingly violent nature of the patients. And, my knee.

I packed up many of my shoes yesterday including my best ever runners, Asics, which were so comfy before my TKR but were just not right afterwards. Runners, day casuals, some sandals...about 10 pairs of pretty good shoes which don't work any more. Took them down to one of the more grim homeless shelters in town. Staff were very happy.
Bye bye shoes. I still have more but I'm resisting parting with them...actually didn't feel like trying them all on..too exhausting.

Maybe if the shoes don't have any wear on them they will be ok.

I downloaded an app to measure my walking distance today. I've been frustrated by my inability to walk much of a distance before getting really tired legs and I'm determined to increase my stamina. Amazingly the distance measured today was .5 of a mile, broken up by a long walk along the water and then to the store and shopping for a few food items. I did sit down once, but I don't think that's crucial in this endeavor. :running:
I don't know how accurate these phone apps are, and I don't really want a fit bit, but if it is accurate I can use it as a guide to slowly increase the distance I can cover. I felt tired when I got home, but no pain.

:walking: Pleased.

I have found these apps aren't accurate. I bet you walked a lot more than it counted. Be sure and check it out by counting your steps yourself for a little bit. I found that I really had to have a lot of extreme motion for my phone app to work. I bought a Fitbit and I can attach to my pant leg. That works great!

I use "map my walk" app and it correlates nicely with my Fitbit. I do have a phone holder I wear around my arm (Walmart sports section)- it was not accurate when I just put my phone in pocket.

Walk on -- that rocks! I can't wait to sit on a lakeside. That sounds heavenly to me.

Oh, no.....maybe I walked less! I used walk logger. Maybe I should also try map my walk and compare. At least it's a project to spice up my walks. I hope I don't have to get a felt it. Maybe I'll try the arm phone holder. Thanks @sistersinhim and @sheliac for the feedback!

Did you listen to music as you walked? That's great that you can walk that far, I'm impressed. Keep up the great work!

Thanks @dianehelen. It has taken 6 and 1/2 months to do. Quite a slog.
I found my IPOD dead so had to do that walk with just my own thoughts! Today I had brunch with friends (early for me) then drove one to the airport on her way to vacation in India...( envious). So IPOD charged today but too tired for walk today after getting up so early, ha ha.
Tomorrow walk plus IPOD.

Actually Audrey, I get to walk by the straight of Juan de Fuca, known here as the Salish Sea. Ferry routes, islands everywhere, Mt Baker (10,000 ft volcanic mtn) across the strait on a clear day, seagulls, seals, crab fishers.
All 3 short blocks away. It's pretty awesome in every season except the rainy winter. I'm not a rain lover except for watching from inside.

I am a big fan of ragtime, and early Dixieland jazz. I had hundreds of CDs, and when I retired, and had three months before moving, I spent much of that three months burning my CDs into iTunes. Then I just gave all the CDs away, and didn't have to worry about packing them. I've ended up with about 14,000 songs on iTunes, and it's so wonderful, you just put it on shuffle and away you go, for years if you like. Some things about modern technology are almost miraculous to me, this being one of them.

To have the patience to burn them boggles my mind! I have tons of CDs that I'd love to get rid of but to burn every one of them, OY VEY IST MIR, dios mio and etc. I favor baroque music and early renaissance, occasional classic rock and roll from my era, and whatever big choral work I'm singing at the moment.

I also have a waterproof ipod and earbuds that helps when swimming laps. I'm looking forward to getting back to that next month!

I'm going to go sit by the little lake in the park today, thanks to you. Ever since I read about your lake walks, I've been dreaming of that. Now, with surgery delayed, I'm going to take baby-knee for a little outing :).

MamaZ-- if you don't want a fit bit (I have one but don't bother with it), why not get a wrist pedometer (there's a good one at Walmart for 19.99). It's waterproof and is also a watch. I used that until I got the phone arm band (I don't like being out without my phone).

With a wrist ped you have to remember to swing your arm. That's why one didn't work for me.

Oh my, I'll have to be more aware of my arm movements when I walk to see if it's a good fit for me. Thanks, ladies, for the info.
