Bilateral THR Grateful Double Hippy

Lot of missed words this morning... Got readers now, hopefully you folks can decipher my garble. Also, accessing site via phone not helpful. Tried to say: So flat out pulls alot of those muscles.

I amended your post - principally GrannyC's tag as you had a space between the '@' and her name which meant it didn't work! It does now!

How long before it is healed up can someone tell me?
Healing: how long does it take?

Also, not supposed to put anything on incisions themselves but wonder if can put coconut oil on skin around where it is pulled so tight and the skin was torn off changing dressings for two weeks where few days.
That would be okay but leave at least 3cm gap between lotion and wound.

Thanks... Still learning how to use forum protocols correctly

Good morning, Mojo. It sounds like you are doing so well. I admire how you've come along after having had both hips done. Great job! As far as sleeping, prior to surgery I mostly slept on my side. Luckily I preferred my left side so maybe about 10 days ago I started sleeping on my left side again. The first couple times I tried to do it, my right leg felt a little strange but after a couple days I didn't notice it any more. This past week since my incision seems healed more, I have also tried sleeping on my right side and that works fine, too. It doesn't hurt to lay on the incision. Sometimes when I wake up for a bathroom trip I feel like I just can't get my right leg (surgery leg) comfortable so I will go on my back and put a pillow lengthwise under my right leg and for some reason, that seems to help and I can fall back to sleep.

I was thinking about your job and I wondered if maybe once you feel a little stronger, if you could start back gradually, maybe 2 hrs a day, for the first couple weeks so you break in more gradually rather than going right back to your old hours. I am 3 weeks postop today and although I feel really great, I have to admit I get tired very easily. It is going to be some time before I have all my energy back, that's for sure. It's just a thought but I know you are so anxious to return.

Hey GrannyC! It's so good to feel everyone getting better together!!! Yea, I forget you are a one-hipper. I tried to sleep without the pillow because though that it's more comfortable...I feel friction on my heels after sleeping for a few hours...Poor bed ridden folks! Can you imagine all the aches and pains from lying in the bed all day!!! Someone gave me a sheepskin and I rolled that under my knees leaving a flat section for my heels to be on, and that has helped. So funny you brought up work. Been on my mind constantly. This town needs this food bank and I might be paying myself in the back but I know that I am an intricate part and the MAIN person who runs it. My father helped start it, and when the awards business I managed for over 20 years closed, I went from volunteer to manager. I am going to ride up this weekend and do 30-40 min paperwork, and I thought the same thing, see if I could at least be there for a few hours, in a rolling office chair... At least to see how it goes. So nice to have someone to throw ideas off of. Please have a good good day.

@Josephine . Thanks for correcting me to information already accessible on bonesmart. I have looked at a lot of the content but apparently not all of it... Get caught up with the dialog and forget to search for answers already there. Very helpful!

Mojo333.
You doing fine.
All the stuff that is annoying you now will dissipate soon.
Very thoughtful of you re your charity work but please be careful about doing anything at this early stage.
They are going to need you over the coming years so mind yourself now.
Sleeping, eating, Walking and sitting was just about the limit for me at 2/3 weeks.
In relation to lying in bed I don't mind sleeping on my back but it was around 12 weeks I think before I was comfy on my side. Longer for all night.
Bi-Lateral is not for Wimps.
Your doing great.
Joe........

Mojo - that is so neat that your dad was actually the one who started the food bank. I'm sure those filling in while you are gone are doing a good job. I don't know but it may be a bit early to think about starting back, even for a short time. I have been feeling great but must have done a bit too much yesterday so today I feel so tired out that I've hardly done a thing all day other than make an easy supper. It will be early to bed tonight to see if I can get rested back up. I can attest to the fact that it takes very little to tire you out. Since you have two surgeries to heal from, I'd have to think you may get tired even easier although you are younger than me, so that must help some. Is it possible you might bring a little paperwork home to do? That might take a little of the stress out of doing it since you could do it in little bits at a time.

I do agree with @Irish Joe though that you need to think ahead and remember you will be helping them for years to come and you don't want to slow down your return by pushing too hard too early.

It's interesting how we all give each other advice but then we don't always follow that advice ourselves :heehee:

Yep, I'm guilty of that. Really good day today. Haven't been using the walker hardly any. Although I make sure I have leaning posts between destinations. I have been cautiously elongating my gait.. Trying to keep from looking like Tim Conway when I walk. Little sore so I've been icing it up this evening. Pray we all get some sleep tonight:sleeep:

I'm worried about you too everything okay.....Edits to good... I saw you post... you're doing really well....Since night 2 I have slept on my side always with a pillow between my legs like they tell you... I gotta side sleep....

I agree bed ridden people have it much harder than most of us think and my sister had MS was in a wheelchair and bed most of the time I don't know how she did it.... I get aches and pains so easy past resting in bed or on sofa 2 hrs that's my max

Up again... Can't get comfortable. Monday will be 3 weeks... It definitely is a journey...it is definitely getting better. Pray for patience and some more sleep. Glad to have somewhere to vent, bonesmart.

How amazing is our body's ability to heal and adapt. I can't believe how far I've come in 3 weeks although progress seems to come at a snail's pace some days. I remind myself that only ask I recovering from the trauma of bilateral THR, I am also retraining muscles and ligaments that have atrophied due to the severe OA I suffered with for 4 1/2 years. At 53, I was hunched over and couldn't straighten up, I couldn't bend down to the floor without severe pain, sleep was impossible... And my Outlook on life in general was becoming gloomy and frustrating. Hard row to hoe - recovery - but bountiful harvest!

I get the impression from your last post that you may very well already be better off now than prior to your surgery. It sounds like your OA was really bad so I can definitely understand why it would have been depressing. I only had one bad hip and I could still stand straight but those painful steps when you moved was not good. After finding BoneSmart a few weeks before my surgery, I was almost glad when surgery day arrived. If I had been having two done, I might very well have been a bit more anxious. But you have dealt with it so well and now look at you walking around. Do you have a cane you can use when you leave walker? It is great for a bit of support. I was told to use cane until I could walk on my own without limping and that didn't take too long.

I need to get one. I should have planned a little better because I feel like I need to 'try one out' to make sure it's the right size for leaving on. I'm only 5'3" and I feel like the weight bearing is going well, just need it to help with balance maybe. Especially navigating stairs. Going down isn't too bad on these shallow steps, but up is a little tougher not to get off kilter. Guess they have adjustable?

Not that hard to tell when you've done enough. Had good day, alot of pretty much pain free walking, Slow but sure. But went ahead and skipped my afternoon every 6 hr pain pill... And legs are starting to burn... Get getting little numb

You're doing phenomenally well it's normal for moods to be all over and your days some good some bad then you'll be all mostly good...hugs

Yes, the canes are adjustable. I think they need to be the same height as the walker. I got mine a few years back when I had a problem with the arthritis. Dr gave it to me and insurance paid for it. Something to check out. You can probably also Google the ideal cane height.
