Thank you for your encouraging words! I got a good report from my appt today. My knee swole up because of all the movement and walking. It's a long ride to the hospital from where my son lives... Over an hour.
So I am icing and elevating again.

It's amazing how fatiguing an outting like this can be. I didnt have the strength to change clothes.

It sounds like the grandchildren are great bonesmart therapy. I especially like the vision of Dori shooting hoops less than 3 weeks after a TKR .............

My favourite saying is "If I'd known what fun grandchildren would be, I'd have had them first" . I don't have any yet but I'm hoping.

Dori, it sounds like you and Kneeta are doing very well indeed, I'm looking forward to hearing what adventures your grandchildren think up next for you!

The doc suggested that I divide the physical therapy exercises into 3 sessions a day and ice thru out the day, especially for the 1st 6 weeks. I've already being dividing it up so I was happy to hear that's OK.

She also demonstrated a movement that has the sane effect as heel slides but using a chair on wheels. Pretty cool.

After a full day at the hospital, getting x-rayed, riding for 2 hours, etc., Kneeta is saying that she wants to relax for the rest of the day. So I will continue to relax, ice, elevate, and medicate and may just resume my PT tomorrow morning.

Does that sound like a good gameplan??

Dori,
Your gameplan sounds good to me, lots of rest, ice, and elevation with some exercise. Add a cup of tea and have a great day.
Excellent report!:yay:

If you have a cup of tea then you have to have a couple of choccie biscuits too!!:th_heehee:

Sorry Jo, it was a bit selfish of me to go on about grandchildren, but you can always be an honourary (hope thats right) Bonesmartie grandy as well as a mother hen!!:friends:

Aretha, we are definitely in sync about the choc biscuits and the Grands!
Today has been a good day. My PT was balanced throughout the day with rest, icing, and elevation in between. i was given the go ahead to begin putting moisturizer on my suture I've applied some African shea butter.

I am sure that Kneeta will be so appreciative too - keep them heel slides up, they really do work!!

Vitamin E cream is great for the scar and leg in general. I also think the knee itself likes you rubbing it in a firm circular motion, it helps to loosen any scar tissue and feels good too.

Keep Kneeta happy!!

Heel slides + pain

Do your heel slides to the point of discomfort only. NO pain.

Hi Dori

My physio has told me to moisturise the edges of my scar only at present. I still have couple of scabs on the scar that need to come away. I am using Bio-Oil and it smells so good! Have a good day.

Hi Dori,

Glad to hear you're doing well. I rub Antiflamme into my entire knee, front and back and on quads and hammies. I find it great. Its made in New Zealand from natural stuff like Arnica, peppermint oil and such like. Comes in a purple tub, so I call it my purple cream!

Don't get too eager to work too hard---that pain is a sign that you are going too far.

Remember, "no pain, more gain!"

Many of us feel that by working hard---ie---pain---we can move forward faster---but the pain is a sign that you may be counterproductive.

I use BioOil on my scar, very soothing.
Take it easy with the heel slides, ROM will come as you heal.

Are you saying that doing heel slides should not hurt at all? Should doing them register at all on the Pain Scale? If so, whst number?

I agree that doing them is uncomfortable. But I would describe them as hurting or painful.

Mmm that sounds like a great product! Do you order it online?

Hi

Antiflamme is made in New Zealand and sold through pharmacies and in Australia I think. Not sure if it can be ordered for shipping overseas, but here's their website. I'm currently using Antiflamme Extra as it has more Arnica in it and a few other things.

Do them to the point of discomfort. That means that if you get something that makes you wince, cringe, cry out or say 'ouch' then it's too much! On the scale on 1-10, I'd probably say about a 3 at the very, very most.

Thanks Josephine, that's very helpful. That's where I'll keep it.

Overall, I'd say things are going well but my recovery is certainly not what I would describe as linear. But in some ways, I'm doing better than I expected. These little "pockets of swelling" in and around my knee are tender and unpredictable. Yesterday I kept feeling an achiness around my ankle and today there's a small bruise.... things like that.

But my energy level is consistently better and I will not be shooting hoops this weekend, no matter how great I feel.
