Hi Dori, welcome home and glad to hear that you are settling in well. I bet your grandchildren are wanting to take good care of you! Sounds like you are doing well with moving around and pain management. Oh, I was not even close to you in the amount of pain pills that you are able to do now. You are very fortunate!! Enjoy your new knee and check in often with questions or just to tell us about your day!:yay::yay:

Hi Dori,
It is really good to hear how your recovery is going. That is great that your pain is manageable with only 2 percs a day. Wow, I am envious. I am still taking 2 hydrocodones every 4 hours. I tried to go to one at every 4 hours and that did not work for me. Too much pain and swelling still. PT is still pretty bad. Yesterday the guy did some sort of knee cap maniputation that was horrible. He had one thumb on top and one on bottom of my kneecap---right on top of the incision---he pushed down so hard I nearly screamed. I told him to stop, but he did one more anyway. If this happens again I will stop pt and do my own here at home. I have 101 flexion and 0 extension, but that is after very painful pt. I am so happy for you that you are with your family---that environment will be a tremendous help to you physically, and emotionally. Please keep posting, I enjoy all your posts.

Hang on you guys, I need to let you know that I scaled back on the meds too soon. Two a day is just not enough to keep the discomfort at bay enough for me to do a decent job with the exercises and my knee just felt too its"naggy". I guess my knee will have to call the shots on that one too.

Yes, the Grands are so cute. They like hanging out in bed with me watching cartoons or having me read (lots) of books to them. Every day I make a little more progress. I find that it's easier for me to get my exercises in throughout the day rather than allocating a particular time and doing one after the other, done Ive done that too.

Fod example this morning iI was sitting in a sunny room having tea and decided to do my heel slides on the wood floors because my booties were perfect for that. Then when i got out of of the shower, I did my knee raises and standing hamstring curls using my walker.
Does it matter if I do the routine "in order" rather than haphazardly?

I think you are doing great, and I am sure it makes no difference what order you do your exercises in, just take them slowly and only push as far as is comfortable, and never into pain!! Forget "no pain, no gain" the real philosphy is "any pain, NO GAIN!!"

Once you are up and back to "normal" living, we in the Uk are told that this is normally sufficient exercise, and once you are driving and walking that should suffice, providing you are getting lots of RICE, rest, ice and elevation of your leg whenever you can too. I guess its a fine balance of movement and rest.

You seem to be doing so well, and having family around makes a world of difference to your recovery I am sure. I had great family around me too and they ensured that I was kept fed and watered, and had plenty to occupy me. Keep up the good work.:thumb:

Aretha,

I am allergic to PAIN. It doesn't matter whether it's physical, emotional, or otherwise. If it hurts too much, I choose a different route.

A lot of people are gung-ho and take pride in how much pain they can endure. Surprisingly, I have a fairly high pain theshold but truly, I try to eliminate pain from my routine. I first heard the "no pain-no gain" during the Jane Fonda workouts in the workouts 70-80's and I understood it from a gym-rat perspective as a motivator to get thru those endless reps. But today my motivation and my goals are so very different from what they were when I was a cutie-pie in her 20'S. Been there, done that.

Glad to hear it, and I've no doubt with that attitude you will be well in charge of your own recovery. Will watch your recovery keenly so please keep posting.:friends:

Did you know that Jane Fonda's name is mud with most reputable orthopaedic surgeons? That one stupid ra-ra saying has had more patients seeking treatment for any manner of injuries than anything similar in the history of modern medicine. (The invention of stiletto heels with wedge soles coming a close second, of course! :wink1:) Most issues were muscles strains all over the body especially back and neck, shoulder, knees and feet! My chiropractor is mildly antagonistic towards it as well!

That doesn't surprise me. Her workouts contained some advanced movements and asanas, like the yoga plough.

I read someplace that she is producing a new exercise routine for seniors. Jane also has had a TKR.

She did a blog about her TKR that made interesting reading! Worth a look while you are resting up.

Thanks Jo. I'll look it up.

Everyday presents a new challenge in my healing process. Today I'm dealing with a little patch of pain on the latrral side of my knee. I'm also noticing a little bruise and tenderness on my calf. I'm thinking this has something to do with where the anesthesiologist rsn the femoral block.

I wonder what it will be tomorrow??

G'morning,

I've had a splendid morning so far. I actually sat in the kitchen and had breakfast with the family. The Grands finished and went upstairs to play leaving the grownups to chat over a second cup of coffee. I had a refreshing shower afterwards and am back in bed icing and elevating. I feel a nice nap coming on. I'll check in later today.

Dori, Good to hear things are going along well for you. And it is nice to have normal moments just 2 weeks out.

Keep doing all those bone smartie things, and you'll be hop, skip and jumping in no time! :th_heehee: Judy

Hi Dori, sounds like you have everything and everyone under control, and having your family around you is the best medicine for any of us.

Look forward to reading about the rest of your recovery...

Me and my Type A personality!!

I guess I overdid it Sunday. It was such a wonderful day... the first day I actually felt like "myself" in such a long time. I should have stopped at the point of having that 2nd cup of coffee with my son and daughter-in-law. But noooo, instead of listening to the voice of REASON, I decided to go outside and enjoy the lovely sunshine.

I walked the full length of the LONG driveway several times using my walker as the Grands glided back and forth on their scooters. THEN I shot HOOPS with ny grandson and actually made a couple of 3 pointers, nothing but net!

All this in addition to my regular PT routine.

Needless to say, I paid for it yesterday with very painful swelling. I actually had to take 2 pain pills to sleep thru the night. So, I guess I've learned the hard way, but I wont be doing that anytime soon.

Im much better today. My first post op exam is tomorrow and I'm excited!

Hi Dori

That sounded like a great way to spend a Sunday but sorry you were a little sore. Great news that you have bounced back with no problems :thumb: Good luck with your appointment tomorrow.

Hi Dori,

Its funny but we all seem to fall into the trap of overdoing it at times, I can remember on numerous occasions thinking that I was really past the worst, only for my knee to remind me that IT decides when its time not me!!

You sound as though you have great times with your grandchildren as I do with mine. They are such a blessing in my life, I love them to death. I am loving being closer to my youngest grandaughter since we moved to the coast, she's only 5 and so beautiful inside and out. One of my favourite sayings is "Grandchildren are God's way of compensating us for growing old" and I think its just a perfect phrase.

Hope you continue to make great progess and please remember that as active as you want to be, rest etc, is the most important part of your recovery. Look forward to hearing more from you. :friends:

I absolutely agree in a way I have never understood before. I will need to slow my roll and just take it easy. In the long run, this will be very healthy for me. I'm back on track after a slight derail from too much activity Sunday. Kneeta won't have to tell me twice! in fact whatever Kneeta wants Kneeta gets.

:cry4: But I don't have any .....

Hi Grandy girl! As I have done before, I have typed a reply on the iPad and then it just disappeared in the blink of an eye. Gurrrr, I made an appointment at the Apple store for Friday to have them take a look.

I like the name you have given your knee! Very cute. It sounds like you are rolling right along and doing well. I know the feeling too well of feeling pretty normal like I am capable of more so I do more then I pay for it. Even now. There is a fine line between staying active and crossing the line and doing too much. Sometimes it is hard to find our boundaries because we want so much to just go about our life and be active again. It is a work in progress for sure, but it looks like you are headed in the right direction! :yes 4::yes 4::yes 4:
