Re: GrandyGirl's Recovery Story

My hydrocodone was prescribed on the schedule Jamie mentioned, worked well keeping pain manageable. Take it easy Rest, Ice, Elevation.

Re: GrandyGirl's Recovery Story

Yes, that's not a good thing to do.

Another 'not good thing to do' is let your PT hurt you. PT should never be painful and if it is, tell the person to stop at once. don't take no for an answer and don't let them bully you with remarks that it's for your own good or if they don't your knee will set like concrete and never move again. It's all rubbish. People go on getting better movement in their knee for a year or even longer. You are in charge, you pay his wages so don't take any of that nonsense!

Re: GrandyGirl's Recovery Story

Hi GrandyGirl!
I just started reading your thread, I am a little behind as I was busy all last week and weekend. I think I have spoken to you on the pre surgery side, so let me say that I am glad that you are on the other side now. I hope you your recovery goes smoothly now that you are at home and going to PT. I know you will be back with many questions and there are many good people here to help you along your recovery way! All my best!

Re: GrandyGirl's Recovery Story

Hi everybody,

This morning in PT the therapist tried to talk me into a more painful seat position on the elliptical. By sitting closer in, the workload increased and so did the discomfort in my knee area. I tried it a couple of times and told him I wanted to start out slower, at the lower setting because it hurt too much. He went into the no pain no gain pep talk and I too countered with slow and steadfast wins the race... I'm a BoneSmart tortoise.

what is the nane if the pt u mentioned? U said there is akso a katy location. Thank you.

Re: GrandyGirl's Recovery Story

GrandyGirl....when you talk about a "seating postion on the elliptical" are you really meaning an exercise bike? An elliptical machine is one you use while standing and it would not be a good choice for someone so soon after surgery because of the pressure it puts on the knee.

However, an exercise bike is just fine and always a good choice as long as you take things slow like you're doing.

Re: GrandyGirl's Recovery Story

Its called a Nusport Trs 4000 recumbent multi.... Something or other.

Im sitting, not standing and my keg doesnt make a cycking movement but more of an up and down mvt. It felt good.

Re: GrandyGirl's Recovery Story

Hi Dori, They are certainly putting you through your paces there. When do you leave to go to your sons house? It will be 2 weeks tomorrow since my surgery and all is well but as everyone has said it is slow going but I'm fine with that. Take it easy.

Re: GrandyGirl's Recovery Story

Back from PT and icing my sweet knee down. Therapy was kickbutt, but in the right way. So I've earned this siesta. Talk to you soon.

Re: GrandyGirl's Recovery Story

I will be discharged next wed or thurs and go to my sons house for 2 weeks. He brought me some lunch today and decided to go to physical therapy with me for the 2 pm session. He said it was really productive and hé was surprised at how much i am able to do so soon. Hé videotaped me exercising on the elliptical machine i mentioned earlier to show to my grandkids. My 5 year old g daughter thinks tgey cut my legs off so this will be particularly good for her to see... Especially w my lemon yellow non-skid socks on which means i am a very awesome exercise warrior!

Now... On a more serious note, depending on the results of my blood work, my Hg level, and hematocrit, i may need a blood transfusion tomorrow. Josephine or Jamie, can u comment more on this? I dont really understand it all.

Dori

Re: GrandyGirl's Recovery Story

Jazyb,

it seems surreal that it has been 2 weeks since your surgery date. how are you doing and what has been your greatest challenge so far? Have we heard from Diney and luvtocamp? We should all be on the other side now, right?

Dori

Nothing to worry about, Dori. Some people do get a bit anaemic after a major surgery and need a pint or two of the red stuff! It will do you good.

But that PT must be stopped! You are only one week out and really shouldn't be doing much PT anyway for another week or two. You did right to tell him what you did (loved the 'BoneSmart tortoise'!). But when/if he says that 'no pain, no gain' nonsense again, you tell him "No - that's for strength and fitness training, not recovery. In recovery it's no pain MORE gain!"

That is right Grandy Girl, I had forgotten that we had talked about that prior to your surgery. I am so sorry that I never got back to you, it really did slip my mind. If you do go there, they are so awesome and please tell them that I recommended them to you. I am their star patient! I do go to the Willowbrook location though but they all know each other and my own PT goes back and forth between locations. His name is Dr. Luu. I promise they will never hurt you. They always ask me if it hurts and if it does they modify or change whatever the request was.

They are called PLEX. You can find them at www.plex.cc and the main phone number is 281-499-7539. They take ALL insurance and treat everyone as "in network." Please call them and set up an appointment, I give them full credit for making my recovery as good as it has been and for as strong as I am now, all while being very caring and gentle.

Hi Dori, I am doing well (I think), it is slow progress everyday but it is progressing how I much anticipated it would be. My knee still has swelling so it feels tight and my rom has not improved too much. As everyone has said it's a slow boring process. How true! Greatest challenge so far ... trying to be patient.

I'm sure the blood transfusion will be a good thing and it will really perk you up. As you read on my thread I had my blood put back in and I felt so much better afterwards. Don't worry. Your little granddaughter will be pleased to see you with both legs; it's easy to forget the thoughts that go through their minds - bless her!

Never ceases to amaze me how the PTs can vary so much. I think the no pain no gain folks need to be cahsed into a new line of work not working with recovery folks. My granddaughter loves to see blodd, as long as it is not hers. She wants to see my knee as soon as possible after the surgery. She is onlly 4 but tells me how she is going to take care of me. Do take care not to over do and congrats for sticking to your guns on the no pain PT.

Hi Dori
Yes I'm back home too and making a slow recovery. I got Josephine to change my thread name to Diney's got another new knee!
I'm sorry you've had a tough time and I hope the knee starts to settle down soon.

G'morning,
i haven't heard the verdict on the transfusion but I am in a better state of mind abt it if i need to have a transfusion. I woke up w a little swelling so I'm icing before i go to pt. I will check in when i get back to my room. Have a good morning.

Dori

Im back from pt and back in bed resting, elevating, and icing. Like you Jo, my knee has some swelling which makes it painful. I don't know how this can be avoidable considering what the knee replacement surgery actually entails. A lot of Trauma to our bodies. Then on top of that, we are expected to Willingly exdrcize this hot, offended joint! God help us all. It's an amazing journey. I am making progress but this is not a process to be rushed. Today my knee is calling the shots and she is sayng, "Dori, dahling, toes above the nose. "
