TKR Eciulla's recovery thread<<

Thank you. I told my therapist that very same thing today!!

She said okay we will do something else. So we did balance and the leg press with no weight.

Wants me to get up out of a regular chair without using my hands. This is a killer. Not in the quad though but directly under the kneecap.
I don't think you want to be doing that at 5 weeks! And I've never heard anybody else say they've been told to do that! What a silly idea!
Does the quad muscle run down to the knee?
It does indeed though it actually goes down past the knee cap as you can see here.

Thank you Josephine! I was happy that the PT was very accommodating and listened to my concerns.

There's no way I could get out of a chair without using my hands at the moment. And I'm only a couple of days behind you Eciulla. I look carefully for the best seat when I am out knowing that I will need to lever myself on something to stand up again.

Jacimarble, I know right !!!! I will forgo the chair exercise for now and concentrate on my other exercises. How are you doing at almost 5 weeks?

If the chair exercise was recommended by your therapist, and it’s not a good one, I wonder what @Josephine would think about your other recommended exercises.

Keep in mind, it’s not exercising that gets our range of motion back, it’s Time:

Time to recover.
Time for pain and swelling to settle,
and Time to heal.

Our range of motion is right there all
along just waiting for that to happen so it can show itself.

In the general run of things, it doesn't need to be fought for, worked hard for or worried about. It will happen. Exercise as in strength training is counter-productive and in the early weeks does more harm than good. Normal activity is the key to success.

I'd really like to offer you some structured advice but in order to do that, I also need to ask you some questions. Are you willing for me to do that?

Good morning!! Today is 6 weeks post op. What a difference between week 2 and today. Almost pain free, am walking fine, no limp, good rom 130 degrees and extension of 0. All good. Walking 1.5 to 2 miles 3 times a week.
Biggest change between week 5 and 6. Thanks for all the support!

Hi all, one day shy of 7 weeks. Felt great last week, not so much yesterday and today. Therapist says as you feel better and stronger you tend to do more like going up and down stairs in a normal way instead of one step at a time, which I am doing. I also started driving since I am not taking pain meds. Thought I could run a bunch of errands the other day and by the time I got home I was beat. Yesterday had to drive a car with a clutch and that didn't feel so great either. When can I feel back to normal. Thought I was there, guess not!!

@Eciulla - I'm a week ahead of you and not feeling great quite yet but much better. I think this is sort of the "delusional period" for us. We feel better than we have in months (if not years), get over-confident, have a normal day and then need to crawl into a hot shower and bed - about 5 p.m. :) It's all good but another reminder this recovery does take a long time and it's best to pace ourselves. But it's so much better than 7 or 8 weeks ago, isn't it?

True, I never thought after week two I would ever be among the living, despite what everyone said! I actually do feel pretty good, but not as good as I would like. Good to know that others are going thru the same thing. Are you still numb?

@Eciulla - did you see Josephine's offer, which I have quoted, above?

Yes, I responded that I would be happy to answer all questions!

@Eciulla - Yes, most of my left leg is still numb but that happened before the tkr last year. There is a small spot on my right knee which is numb but that seems pretty normal and will probably eventually go away. I'm just so relieved and glad both have been replaced now so that maybe, just maybe, i'll have something resembling a "normal" life for the first time (in 3-1/2 years) and not have to consider my knees when making any plans.

HI, 8 weeks post op...thought I would be much better..still stiff, which I know can last months..still numb around the knee cap and down to end of incision. walking more than a mile really irritates and sets me back a few days. still doing strength and balance with PT. She says I am doing great and ahead of schedule. Whatever that means! any insight is appreciated!

Technically it’s still early to be doing strength things at PT. Let your knee heal more before you do specific things to strengthen it. As you heal it will strengthen by default. Later on if you want you can do more to strengthen it.

If you can walk a mile at 8 weeks you are doing well. Again, as you heal you’ll be able to walk and stand still longer.

Sounds like things are going fairly average for you.
