TKR Eciulla's recovery thread<<

It took months before I could get up from a chair with no hands, and depending on the chair, I still can’t.

You mean like this?

I'd really like to offer you some structured advice but in order to do that, I also need to ask you some questions. Are you willing for me to do that?

of course I will answer all questions..and yes that is where the pain is.

Here y'go then!

It would be very helpful if you would answer each one individually - numbered as I have done - in as much detail as you can then I'll come back as see where you are ....

1. what are your pain levels right now? (remember the 1-10 scale: 1 = no pain and 10 = the worst you can imagine. And don't forget to factor in other forms of pain such as soreness, burning, stabbing, throbbing, aching, swelling and stiffness).

2. what pain medications have you been prescribed, how much are you taking (in mg please) and how often?

3. how swollen is your leg compared to these?

[Bonesmart.org] Eciulla's recovery thread<<

4. what is your ROM - that's flexion (bend) and extension (straightness)

5. are you icing your knee at all? If so, how often and for how long?

6. are you elevating your leg. If so how often and for how long?

7. what is your activity level? What do you do in the way of housework, cooking, cleaning, shopping, etc., and

8. are you doing any exercises at home? If so what and how often?
This is the most crucial question so please help me by using the format I have left as an example
(which means please make a list and not an essay!)

Exercises done at home
- how many sessions you do each day
- enter exercise by name then number of repetitions of each
etc., etc.

Anything done at PT
- how many times a week
- enter exercise by name then number of repetitions of each
etc., etc.

Pain level 0 when sitting or lying 2 when walking, mostly stiff
Have been taking Tylenol 2 650's 2 or three times per day

Icing twice a day 1 hour

normal activity grocery shopping, house cleaning, cooking,
have stopped doing any organized exercises

Hello all, hope recovery is going well for all of you.
I have returned from an almost 3 week vacation that involved a lot of walking. 3 to 5 miles per day. My knee is very angry. I was able to ice and elevate most nights. I did oxcy 10mg a few times, but mostly took Tylenol and ibuprofen to manage pain. Had moderate swelling and continued stiffness which I still have after being home for two days. OS said I was fine to go on this trip and that I could not do any damage and to walk all I wanted. Suggestions for getting back to where I was before I left ? Thanks

He meant that you couldn't do any damage to the new knee! However, surgeons do have a habit of not including the soft tissue in the conversation! I think you need to go back and read my advice here.

He did say the soft tissue would be irritated. So I have gone back to resting, elevating, icing.

4 months post op. OS has upped my Celebrex to twice a day because of Patellar tendinitis. He also suggested 4 weeks PT twice a week for stretch, massage and Ultra Sound. Not sure the US was a good idea, more pain today and yesterday after the US. Thoughts?

It could be the PT that's causing more pain. I don't know anything about US on the knee after this surgery. I am going to tag @Josephine, our forum director and nurse to address your concerns.

I agree, sistersinhim. What exercises are you being made to do? What sort, how many reps?

What pain meds are you taking? How much (mgs) and how often?

Are you icing? How long for and how often each day?

No exercises only massage and ultrasound.

Tylenol (2) 650mg twice per day (does not help much)
only take 10mg oxcy once a day when absolutely need it
Celebrex 200MG twice a day

Icing twice per day 1 hour each time

I am mostly interested in your thoughts about the US

No exercises is good. But am unable to opine on the US as it's not something I know much about.
(Well, at least I'm honest!)

I'm not surprised the Tylenol doesn't help much with that dose. I suggest you try 1,000mg 4 times a day (6hrly).
Also take the oxycontin more frequently, such as two or three times a day.
Icing twice per day 1 hour each time
You accomplish little or nothing with that amount. Ice for at least 4 times a day and maybe more, 6 or even 8 times!

Thanks for your feedback greatly appreciated. I will up the dosage of Tylenol every 6 hours and increase
the amount of icing too..Will take the oxcy more often as well.. I figured this much post op I would feel close to normal. My therapist chuckled last week when I said that :)
So my guess is that I am expecting too much too soon and 4 months post op is still early. My brain tells me everyone heals at a different pace, my emotions say I want to be that one in a hundred that is 100% at 4months!
Have a most wonderful evening!

Hello again, 4 days post op knee number . Tkr right knee January 9th. Tkr left knee july 25.
I do not remember having to wear knee stabilizer last time. I think I would have remembered because it is like a vice
To be worn while sleeping. Anyone familiar? When I wear it even if for a few hours, knee is so painful and stiff not sure it is doing any good. Thoughts, suggestions?

Hi and Welcome to Recovery again. That stabilizer sounds awful. What was your surgeon’s reason for using it?

I’ll tag @Josephine for you.

Eciulla,
Going back and reading your experience with ultrasound, the setting was probably too high for you. When you complained they should have lowered the setting, or stopped the ultrasound.
Like Jockette, I am interested in why you are wearing a brace?
Who makes your stabilizer brace?

@Eciulla - My left TKR is two days from now on Wed, 1/16. My surgeon said she had ordered for me the brace you are asking about. I hadn't read that anyone else on this forum recommended this, so this was definitely something I was going to ask about after surgery. I am interested in reading the feedback you get.

Wishing you a bit more success with this recovery!
