THR Double hippy happy<

Just a quick update over the last couple of days. Achilles tightness has eased considerably, still tight but nowhere near as bad. My left ankle is doing better after I twisted it, right foot and ankle still swollen, goes down overnight when elevated but looks like a rugby ball by the end of the day. Doesnt bother me as it's done that since surgery and I know it takes time to go. And to top it all off I have a cold so not feeling my best.

The hip on the other hand is doing great, I'm slowly but surely getting better range of motion back in it, can already move it further than before surgery so thats a big plus.

oh so sorry for the cold!! So happy for achilles tendon and hip!!! And twisted ankle too. The ROM just keeps on getting better and better!!

@zauberflöte i hate colds, that's the trouble with having 4 kids, one gets it, we all get it :(

A few aches today in both ankles. Happy that the achilles is getting better, wasn't quite as bad again this morning so it is improving day by day, hip was stiff this morning but soon loosened up.

My poor cat had to be carried upstairs last night, she couldn't do the stairs at all, poor lass :(

Aww - poor fur baby! Is it just old age, the cold weather? Hope she is OK!

awww poor kitty...So glad she has you to take care of her. I had two to get that old and older, and I know how it goes...

I only had two kids, but had immense fortune in not catching their colds. Flu, yes, and once we all had that walking pneumonia thing, so we were glad there was a parent for each child to sleep [SIC hahaha not much sleeping going on] in a chair with all night!

But I cannot imagine doing young children with a new hip. You are my hero! You're only 9 days behind me, and I've made strides in the past week that flabbergast me-- wishing you the same in the next week and onwards!!

Glad to hear the achilles is less tight. I am still very tight in my operative thigh and quad, with spasms upon awakening. One of my cats has some arthritis issues, too, at only 11 years, but stairs are still ok. Jumping on the bed is more like a wall climbing/clawing exercise for her now!
Having a cold can be miserable. Take good care.

Hi all, good news, my achilles has stopped being a pain and is much better. Bad news is I now have ankle synovitis caused by the surgeon using it as a leverage point, he literally sprained my ankle and as I've started weight bearing I've aggravated it and have a swollen ankle and foot.
I still have a cold so feel miserable, tired and grouchy.

Fur baby has decided that stairs aren't her thing anymore and won't go up them unless she's carried up.

Hoping everyone's recovery is going good :)

oh yuk @SarahUK if it's not one thing it's another! Really? A sprained ankle? RICE Rest Ice Compression Elevation-- you'll have to buy some more ice packs...I am sorry your cold is hanging on, it is a miserable season isn't it. I'd bet some of your grouchies are post-op blues...mine always show up as a massive crabby attack, out of nowhere. Poor hubby!

@zauberflöte trouble is, if I'm not careful, this cold could easily turn into bronchitis which I don't need or want.
Quite possibly the grouchies are post-op blues, or some at least. Should be better in a couple of weeks when i finally get released from my 3 month restrictions and I'm going away at the end of the month for a short break. Change of scenery will do me good.
Hubby and kids have been great. They've put up with a lot of stress caused by this op and the lengthy recovery it entails.

As I'm typing this, my fur baby has just come and laid down next to me, she won't leave my side and she's reluctant to sit on my knee, almost like she knows she has to wait a bit longer, bless her.

Just a quick update, I've been pretty quiet for a few days.
Pain in ankle has eased off considerably, but the tight feeling in my achilles has returned and also along the inside edge of my foot. I've also recently noticed that when I stand on the left leg only, my right foot seems to be an inch off the ground which would account for the limp I have, hoping this goes away over time.
The good news is I'm one week away from my restrictions being lifted although I'm still going to be cautious getting in and out of the car, bed et cetera.
Still have the cold, hasnt gone to bronchitis yet thank heavens.
The grouchies seem to have gone for now, even with all the minor niggles, I feel better in myself now that I know I'm well on the road to being able to walk more or less pain free (left hip needs doing next).

Fur baby is still being carried upstairs. I know just how she feels poor girl. She finally sat on my good leg for about 5 minutes today, she won't go on the operated side, in fact she avoids touching it at all.

Hope everyone is recovering well :)

Another update.

I'm happy to report that the majority of the ankle/foot swelling has finally gone, some residual swelling still present but I can now get my shoes on easily :D Hip is getting stronger by the day, I can feel improvements in ROM, slightly stiff when I get out of bed but soon passes.
All in all, one happy hippie :D

Also managed to get a pair of jogging bottoms on this morning so I feel a bit more like the old me, (jeans and t-shirt gal)
Fur baby is curled up in her bed next to me purring cos she's just had treats and a fuss.
Busy trying to get the house sorted before I go away for a few days next week.

Another update before I'm AWOL next week :)

Bad news about my fur baby, she's got a cataract in her left eye. Only noticed as she tried to jump on the chair and missed it :(

Good news, I'm 95% swelling and pain free in my right foot/ankle, still some residual swelling goin on but that is diminishing day by day. Scar has improved and I've not used anything on it, a slight itch but nothing that a gentle rub over doesn't cure. Also a few mild shock like tingles that happen at random through the day, nothing during the night that I've noticed. I'm a light sleeper so the slightest itch, tingle etc wakes me up.

I'll catch up with all of you when I return from my few days break :)

Hi all,
Just returned from a few days away, possibly overdid it a bit with the walking around, lots of muscle pain. Other than that, the hip is doing great, still limp if I try to walk without a crutch, was hoping to see an improvement in my gait but I limp badly.

I'm also the bearer of bad news, my fur baby passed away on Tuesday night :boohoo:

Hi @SarahUK
It sounds like you need a peaceful relaxing weekend
after overdoing it a bit in addition to losing your fur baby. So sorry!
Take it easy for a time.
To brighter days.....

Hi @Layla

Relaxing weekend didn't happen, kids back at school so had all the uniforms to sort, make sure that they had homework done etc.

The loss of my fur baby hit 2 of my lads pretty hard, my eldest and youngest, they both cried for a couple of days as did I. House feels empty without her.

Brighter days indeed, I've managed to ditch the raised toilet seat, can finally get in the bath without a bath board to have a shower. The only thing getting me down a bit now is this darn limp when I try to walk without a crutch, otherwise I'm doing ok.

So sorry you lost your furry friend. It's always hard - especially when they are very old.

Keep using the crutch until you start leaving it behind. You may need to build strength on one side and that crutch will help you do this.

@Jaycey
Thanks. My lads are already asking for another pet, but for me, personally, it's too soon.

I will even though it is so frustrating at times especially when I need both hands for something, that usually ends in a yelling session to get one of the boys to help me :)

Could it be that even though I know the joint is solid I'm still wary of fully weight-bearing on it?

Definitely - especially if you limped around for any length of time pre-op.

Try to focus on each step when you walk. Plant the heel and then rotate to the toe. If you can do this where there is a mirror it's even better. Retraining yourself to walk without a limp is very challenging. Just give it a bit of time.

@Jaycey I didn't so much limp as leaned to my left to take weight off the right hip and I probably shouldn't have done as the left is now giving me hell. Not a huge lean but enough to probably contribute to the limp I now have, I have to make a conscious effort not to lean. It's definitely going to take time to retrain myself.
