Hi @Gilly Glad you're enjoying my posts, and if it's helping your recovery that's a real bonus - it's certainly helping mine, I have a family of men and they're not into "sharing" like us ladies are... they are all lovely, but they just want to know how to fix it - they don't get the value of getting it out there:egypdance:
I'm from Perth, the Northern Suburbs - only about 14 kms out... not like where a lot of our work is - about 40 or 45 kms out!! We've been to Brisbane and the GC, went for a dance competition in Brisbane and as the boys were still youngish we went to the GC while we were over there, had a fab time. Brisbane and Perth are very similar, both of about the same vintage and built on mineral wealth - of course Perth is better:wink: actually it IS prettier because we have an awesome river and a huge bay called Perth Water that the city is next to... and our forefathers thought to save a huge area of the very best high land as a park (Kings Park) so everyone gets to share really exceptional views, and there's real bush on the city's doorstep. Brisbane has the advantage that it's only a couple of hours from Sydney and Melbourne.. and NZ!:eyebrows:
We've been to New Zealand twice, the first time we went from Christchurch across to the West Coast, down to Queenstown then back out from ChCh. The second time we went from ChCh (hubby has family there) up to the Able Tasman for a week (FABULOUS, very sore legs!!) then on the InterIslander and took a week to wend our way through Rotorua, Mt Manganui and the Coramandels etc and left from Auckland. Next time we're going to "do" the South of the South Island (Milford Sound etc) and the North of the North Island (Bay of Isles etc) We really love NZ, it's set up for tourism without feeling "touristy"... Tasmania could take a lesson from you guys, they just don't want to let anyone in at all! We went to Tassie before NZ, and once we'd seen NZ we describe it as "Tasmania on Steroids"... everything we liked about Tassie scaled UP. I lived in Wales for years and my Mum is Scottish and the South Island in particular has a feel of those places - as well as it's "New Zealandness", like those braided rivers... and the North Islands volcanic looking hills, just great:cool:
It's a six hour flight direct from here so we always stop off in one of the Eastern capitals to break the journey, usually Melbourne but we did come back via Sydney the second time so we could walk across the top of the Harbour Bridge, which was awesome... I have the photo they took (we paid the extra and went up at sunset) on my cabinet and everyone thinks it's a backdrop, but it really is Sydney on that day! When the family come over from ChCh they fly direct - but the time difference alone stuffs them up for a day or so, so I reckon our way's better:yes:
Happy Healing:flwrysmile:

@craftdee One of the neat things about Bonesmart is reading about how much people
love their home country.... I have learned a lot about various places in OZ, UK, Ireland, Canada, France, etc....
Its so nice to hear how much people enjoy where they live.

Hi @craftdee your updated posts are awesome I can relate to a lot of what your saying...I look forward to reading them each day...
Isn't Queenstown the bomb??? The scenery is breathaking. I have to get back there and go in the winter. I have heard it goes off big time in winter..lol...Could be a 50th plan...lol..Haven't been to Milford Sounds but have heard great things about it. The Bay of Islands is defo worth a visit, awesome beaches, etc...Your comments regarding Tassie made me laugh. I have only seen it on the telly but have heard the Ozzies there are weirdos (that can't be true...lol..)....Sydney, I love also especially Bondi Beach...Must visit Perth too one day. I know it does get mighty hot there no wonder you have a pool..NZ is a great place, I love it. I originally come from Liverpool, England. We moved to NZ when I was young. Have been back to England twice and felt so much at home, it was unreal I fitted in like a glove. But I have been away to long and couldn't live there. I have a husband and son who is 21 and 2 German Shepherds..You have a Jack Russell, love them. I'm a real animal lover, especially dogs....

I'm feeling good today and finally I think summer has arrived..I have walked a bit, chilled, exercised and more chilling as well as some much needed time in sun...

I hope you get your massage soon...
Keep in touch.....

So your pains are here?

[Bonesmart.org] Craftdee's Made It Through

Well, the blue one is easy - you have Piriformis syndrome! Read the article and do the stretches.

As for the green one, that's either Iliopsoas syndrome or the last remnants of post-op pain.
OS said I had shortened something by holding my leg slightly flexed for so long to protect the hip
That's very common and you can read more here Leg length differential - LLD. However, I doubt this is responsible for these two pains which are mostly caused by doing too much! (reread previous post!)

Thanks again for repylying @Josephine. I'll do the stretches for the Piriformis... they're pretty close to what the Physio gave me and they have helped. The groin pain is more long-term; it isn't as constant as it was at week 2, but definitely "there" a lot! like I said I discussed it with the OS, he said that it could be something to do with the Psoas (tendon/ligament?) he also said that they wouldn't "do" anything about it for twelve months, to see if it resolved itself first... and that if it did not they could release it; he didn't go into details, it obviously resolves itself within that twelve months more often than not. I will start by doing less (I will at least TRY!) I've found swimming daily has helped, I seem to be able to stretch more freely in the pool, and it's time spent NOT hammering around the house doing "stuff"

I've read the links you gave, thanks, I'll do what I can to alleviate the discomfort and hope for the best!! I see a Physio on Friday (they're really laid back here, so I'm not worried about her giving me anything too demanding, more hoping she'll supervise my stretches make sure I'm doing them correctly, and I still have restrictions for over three weeks so maybe she can show me how to do the stretch once restrictions are lifted) I see the OS on the 18th Dec, which is at 11 weeks, hopefully he'll lift the restrictions then, it's only a week early but I'll take it with both hands!!

Well just a quick update; I went to the Physio on Friday - it's nice that I can get myself there now, less pressure in one way (no hubster waiting in the car while I finish getting ready, lock up, go back in for the things I forgot, lock up etc) :skep:
She didn't add much to the mix, so I was a bit disappointed really, I thought we might be adding some exercises or stretches or something whereby I can turn my leg outwards a little. But, no. We worked on my gait - again - I thought it was pretty good, it's smooth and not tiring, but she wants me to put "more weight through the hip", she said my smooth walking was really a very well disguised slight limp, mmm, thought they were a contradiction in terms "smooth walk" and "limp" - what do I know?? :what: I've tried to walk as she's said since, it's now not that smooth, and really tiring, I will persevere for a while at least. I have to go back in January - mainly because the Physio wants to see me AFTER my OS clearance of restrictions - I'm feeling at this point that the Friday appointment was, well, superfluous:whistle:
I definitely have a problem with my Iliopsoas, the Physio found (boy, did she find?!!) a trigger point, she could feel the muscle spasm under her elbow when she pressed on it... and so, might I add, did I :dubious: She suggested I get "someone" to do trigger point massage, so I'll discuss that with our massage place when we go this week, a self-help option for the truly desperate is to get a tennis ball or similar (I'm not very big, so she thought a slightly smaller ball would be better... where do you get undersized tennis balls???) and put it on the trigger point then lean on it - standing is better so I presume "leaning" is against a counter or something, she wasn't that clear! The muscle tightness in the back of my leg apparently "may" be to do with the piriformis, she has suggested hamstring stretches.
I've just had a couple of bad days.... nothing to do with the hip, I've had Gastoenteritis :eeeuw: or Stomach Flu as the more polite refer to it, polite not being my strong suit... I call it what it is, bwah hah. My DIL had it on Thursday, and called her Mum in to help with the twins (Emily started it by upchucking everywhere on Wednesday night... then having the gall to be completely fine!!) I know how hard it is to look after them on your own at "our" age so I went over in the afternoon to share duty. When my hubby got home I got him to have a quick shower, came home picked him up and took him back to theirs... my DIL was still in bed, really unwell. We did the evening shift... dinner, bath, bottle, teeth, bed... as my son ended up working until after 8pm (long day, he's up at 5.30 for a 6am start) They were angels, which was nice, but I think that one of two things happened to cause me to "catch" the bug: a) Bragging that I "never get sick" or b) Having a reduced immunity because of this surgery and the other health issues I've had through the year - personally I'm betting on a)... the universe doesn't like braggers:rotfl:
My leg was really good this morning, in fact I said to hubby that this was the first day I've had when I never even thought to take Paracetemol... I didn't get to keep yesterday's in for very long either, so that's probably two days I haven't had any:loll:Mind you I did spend the morning sitting around doing NOTHING, which I rarely do, or at least rarely enjoy like I did today. This afternoon we went Christmas shopping, it was civilized so that was good, but I did notice that my leg/hip stiffened up quite a lot and pretty quickly - I don't know if I noticed it because I didn't have any Pandol on board, or if it was because we were walking quite fast (hubby is over a foot taller than me, we both compromise in our "stride' but he compromises less, lol) and I was wearing heels, or because I was trying to do the "proper" walk... or a combination of some or all these things. There wasn't "pain" just that tightness again, where I find I'm taking smaller and smaller steps!!
I was surprised that I struggled a bit to walk up the escalator using my left leg first... that hasn't been an issue for a few weeks  The other thing I've noticed, and it is a HUGE plus on it's own, is that - even when the hip feels much the same as it did pre op (minus the bone on bone pain of course), like it did a bit today, I DON'T have the lower back ache that I had pre op, certainly not to the same degree... it was debilitating on it's own and now a minor niggle at worse so :happydance:for that!!!!
Anyway that's the update for now, hope everyone's healing along nicely

and I was wearing heels,

I enjoyed your update(s) . . . actually went back a-ways to catch up . . . you are a busy lady . . . lovely descriptions of your beautiful country . . . someplace I've always wanted to go . .

But :chinstroke:you're wearing heels? I've been so afraid to do so . . . I'm not sure why but that's something I didn't even consider? Its been soooooo long since I wore heels?

Heels? Really? Oh wow....my little toes went into spasm just thinking about it! Give me a nice ballet flat any day...uh, oh....I'm suddenly old!

Try either a golf or squash ball to get at that pesky psoas....depends on how masochistic you're feeling  Me, I'd start with the squash ball....

I DON'T have the lower back ache that I had pre op, certainly not to the same degree... it was debilitating on it's own and now a minor niggle at worse so :happydance:for that!!!!

I do love the little to no back ache! Its funny - I kinda feel an absence of pain in my back? The pain I associated with the SI joint that I had the injection for back in July/August is still completely gone. But, I was mentioning on my own thread I think I noticed from the weight machines last night that the abductor muscle coming from back and then down and around to outside of thigh to knee is all "absence of pain" feeling? Whatever, I do love the back NOT hurting!

Hi @Me2 and @Meggzie ... I can't believe you guys... you "did" horseriding and are scared of "heels"??!! :rotfl: Mind you you're probably both taller than 5'2" (which I am less than!) so don't "feel the need, the need for...height!"
Yeah Jena, re the Masochism thing... I have a joke that I trot out regularly "The masochist says to the sadist 'whip me, whip me' and the sadist says to the masochist....NO" Take a minute, think about it... you got it:heehee: I am no masochist, so I will take the squash ball option, good thinking thanks.
The location of the "missing pain" you mention Sheryl, is EXACTLY where mine is/was/isn't...you know what I mean:loll: from back across down through bum hip thigh.... ALL GONE (or near as dammit) I am so glad, coz it was a pain:rotfl:
I'm a bit bummed about my ROM though, I still can't, how can I put this, "let my left leg relax to the side whilst lying down" - it goes further than it did, but way off as far as the right - I suppose the real issue is that with restrictions still in place (will they never bloody end?!) I can't try/test/push to stretch it. Ah well, all good things come to those who wait.... I'm wai-ting!! I still have the groin discomfort (hate the word "pain" the most overused word in English after "hate":heehee:) and the newer back-of-thigh-where-it-meets-the-butt discomfort; I'm torn between resting it and stretching it, don't know which will work and of course the only way to find out for sure is to do one or the other... problem being I'm not that lucky and will no doubt go the wrong way first then have MORE to undo... I may just sit and type while gently raising leg; best of both worlds?
You should come to Oz, Sheryl, it really is a beautiful place... so much more varied than you presume, though those variations do have a fair distance between them :heehee: I wasn't born here, I came here when I was 13 but for some reason I love it fiercely... perhaps more than if it were my birthplace as I have something to compare it to! Our friends came to the US a couple of months ago, they did a month on the West Coast but for us that seems to similar to where we live so we would do the East Coast first... though to be honest I have a hankering for Canada... and of course the bonus is that my OS has gone there for a year
Anyway, I'm not really on BoneSmart right now; I'm really doing invoices up that need to go in the next hour, oops the perils of working from home with internet access
Have a good one... and a great day too:rotfl:
Donna xx

Yes, I'm not really on BoneSmart either right now --- I'm not often on the computer for work, just when I have grants or trainings or other government projects to work on. Normally, I just get to play all day with my little ones. How in the world do you all who really "work" from home ever get anything done -- the internet is so distracting! Yikes!

On the heels issue -- I've fallen more from heels than from a horse! I abandoned heels quite some time ago when I just could not walk in them -- I have a whole area of my closet with heels that I abandoned. I'm only 5'3" so with a 6 foot hubby I used to love wearing them. Its just one of those things I started "avoiding." All those little things we gradually started to avoid were so sneaky. I guess heels and all the other little things sneaking back into our lives is what makes this time so rewarding and exciting. I just need someplace to wear heels to now!

And, yes, I would really love to come to Oz! Someday . . . .

Hi@craftdee. I have followed your posts since your surgery and have been able to relate to so many of them. I am a few weeks ahead of you in my recovery I am at 13 weeks post op now and yes those darn restrictions were lifted last week! I can bend past that 90 degrees and cross my legs, but I still can't bend enough to put a sock on or tie a shoe, my left hip is holding me back! I admire your ability to wear the heels too!

LTHR - Jan. 19 2015

Okay @Me2 and @NuMe2014 ... may have overstated the "heels" ... they're a slim wedge just over 2 1/2" high - old favourites and what I considered a safe transition to "real heels", but now I feel like I misled you! I've attached a pic so you can decide for yourselves (yup, I feel that bad!) [Bonesmart.org] Craftdee's Made It Through :)

My hubby's a foot taller than me too Sheryl, so the last few months have had us looking like quite the odd couple; he only liked short girls though so aren't I lucky?! :yahoo:'We've known each other since I was 15 (well we didn't actually start "going out" until I was nearly 18) he was a friend of my Sister's first husband - the friendship and the husband didn't last but hubby and I did You might just get to meet him when you come to Oz "someday"

I'm so glad your restrictions have been lifted NuMe2014, I'm also glad to see that SOMEONE else had 12 weeks worth, I was starting to think that me and Hoppy Nanny were the only ones... EVER :rotfl: I really can't wait to see if I can cross my legs.. I'm sure it'll take a bit of working up to as I couldn't do it before surgery, straight legged I could touch my toes easily.. in fact I can/could get my hands back behind my feet... which I thought was a good thing but is one of the " markers" for RA or SLE which is why they're testing for that (not the only marker of course, that would be a bit extreme!!) Doing shoes up was a bit harder, slightly different flex. Flexion wasn't really a problem (obviously) but rotation was ... so I'm looking forward to retraining those muscles too. You know what it's like, so frustrating to not be able to just stretch when you want - all the best Hip Flexor Hamstring/Psoas stretches involve breaking one restriction or another; if you're not breaking your 90 degree rule you're crossing the midline... and my Hamstrings and Psoas REALLY need a good stretching:loll: The first OS I had said I would NEVER be allowed to cross my legs again, the one that did the op said he wants me to do as much "normal" stuff as possible - some people might struggle with who to follow, not me - I pick the eyes out and use what I want from EVERYONE:heehee:
I'm really quite sore again today, this new gait lark is a bit hard on the ol' muscles. I'm making light of it, but I was pretty miserable this morning, poor me:cry: snapping out of it a bit now. I'm going to have my swim then go and see the twinnies, that always makes my day - and makes me remember what I did this for!
Enjoy your whatever:SUNsmile:

My heels phobia has naught to do with my hips...they just flat out hurt my feet! I'm just a tick over 5'2" and need all the help I can get, but these days I'm happier if my feet don't hurt:loll:

@craftdee I love the shoes and look forward to the day when I can wear some of my own. I am 5'4", I guess tall for the standard that has been set here. Used to be 5'5" but lost an inch somewhere along the way! Interesting what you said about markers for RA. I can stretch my hands behind my feet and in fact, I do have RA. I have found out with all the PT I am getting that my knees are hyper-extended. I guess those with RA have loose tendons.

Enjoy that swim! It is raining like a monsoon here and is just above freezing - which means all the roads will freeze to black ice tonight. I am jealous of your summery weather!

Take care! :loveshwr:

I'm wearing heels! Going to a dinner at my son's college

Think they're safe enough? Or, actually I guess if I fall it wont be as far as off the horse???

Ah well I'm wearing heels!!!! Thanks for the inspiration!

 I survived my night of heels! Another first! :dancy:

To be honest, I hurt more from the heals than that first trail ride last June!

But I did it! :heehee:

Ah hah @Me2 so glad I "inspired" you :snork: They look at least as safe as a horse to me :rotfl: Very nice shoes, actually and definitely "proper" heels :) I hope you have a fabulous time at your son's "do"

So nice to hear from you @LaxMom as we say in Australia " 'ow are ya goin'?" I'll stalk, err I mean check out your knee thread later and see for myself:eyebrows: I gained over a centimetre (1/2") from the surgery... well I'm still having a bit of trouble standing with that leg straight enough to be measured, but as I had apparently LOST that much I presume I've got it back:yes!:

Yes, it was interesting about the RA thing, being able to hyper extend your joints when young (being "double jointed") was high on the list... it only came up in conversation with my rheumatologist when I said I used to be able (even as a young adult) to put my foot on top of my head and that now I couldn't put the same foot up to my other knee! I "hit" five from seven of the markers he tested for at consult; I have an elevated base temperature, an indicator of underlying inflammatory disease, depression (another box ticked), diabetes (despite being within normal mass range and a "sound" diet/fitness level) which is another "indicator" and I have very high Uric acid levels (apparently if I drank - well more than I do, I am what is known here, I'm not sure if it's the same there, as a one pot screamer... though my hubby reckons it's more like half small glass screamer:heehee:) ate red meat (I do, but very little preferring chicken or vegetarian, no moral objection, just prefer the taste:snork:) I would probably have had attacks of gout by now; uric acid is also associated with kidney stones, of which I've had several. The OS sent some of the bone from my hip to the RA guy (well probably NOT the actual bone to the actual guy:rotfl:) for testing, apparently bone is a very good medium to use in testing, but we don't often have a bit to spare like in a blood test:rofsign: Nobody's said if and/or when I get to hear the results. The RA guy said he was looking at RA and SLE primarily; I figure if I've got it I've had it for a while so no need to rush to find a solution, and if I haven't then there's no rush to do anything, so I'll just wait until someone taps me on the shoulder:umm:

I'm feeling so much less discomfort today in both front and back of my leg:yes!: this morning was really good, for first thing, and still feeling good now. So I'm going to go for another swim and do all my stretches and step ups in the pool like I did yesterday, if that's the formula I am onto it at last!! We've been taking the dog for a walk every evening too, and I really concentrate on my gait for that one, it was definitely more comfortable last night than it's been - though I did take a couple of paracetemol when I came home to get the edge off quicker... which it did. So, GOOD and GOOD:happydance: I'm really working on the Psoas and Hamstring stretches, and the step ups as it's still uncomfortable when I put the weight on my operated leg when I lead with it up steps and slopes ... the discomfort is in that hamstring area up into my butt, not up my back but "through" the butt - the psoas I'm sure.

So quick swim, stretches, walking (I go out of my depth, hold on to the seat and do the same action as on an elliptical trainer, really works well!) dry off and go Christmas shopping... that's my day sorted, oh and there's the rest of the ironing:sick:, and some paperwork :swoon: and housework :groan:

Catch You Laters babe

No heels. I guess I have been so used to wearing flats. Of course I am tall at 5'9". So heels or no heels doesn't really matter. Last week I did put on some old shoes. Big big mistake. Wow my gait was off. Those shoes are now gone and have been replaced. I am going to have to try on all my shoes in the next few weeks before I return to work. So sad . . . I may need to shoe shop. :heehee: Don't we love buying shoes. I love shoes and purses.

I love your exercise routine. Your ache is your hamstring. Mine is my right knee on the outside and the middle going up the quad. I stretch it using a chair or my bed.

So happy you are doing well. All my best.
