THR Cpollock Surgery June 19, 2017<

@cpollock Hi Cheryl. We had surgery around the same time. I've noticed that using my cane when I'm very tired or my hip flexors are sore seems to help take some stress off my hip, so I use it as needed. I stopped taking Advil for a couple months but with going back to work and just being more active in general, I've started taking it in small amounts as needed and it does help. We are still early in recovery and I know still have some swelling. Hope you have a great week! Take care...Rita

Thinking of you Chery as I know you have a lot going on in your life besides your recovery. You seem pretty tough though. Just don't forget to think of yourself first at times so you don't get too run down. Take care. Sending positive vibes your way.....

Hi everyone. Thank you for thinking of me. Things have been pretty busy for me this past while but I want you to know I'm thinking of you all and hope to be back more regular soon

I'm coping the stiffness in my hip and still limping around. The cane I still use about 50% of the time. I feel I should be getting around better than I am and it can be discouraging at times. I had some tightness in my other hip but I think it's from going without the cane and compensating. I've been using the golfer's reach to pick up some things from low shelves which is progress.

My husband is still in rough shape, not good. I had a great time with Noah the other weekend but was worn out when he left, the whole weekend was a bit much as my husband wasn't good enough to help. But it was a good tired and Noah lifts my spirits. We had a winter storm the last couple days and the base was closed today because of it so I got the day off with pay.

It's all good now so back to work tomorrow. I wish you all well. Cheryl

Yay for week off with pay. Just wanted to pop in and say hello. Hope all continues to get better:wave:

@cpollock Cheryl, wow, a paid day off--- but, Winter Storm? Yikes to a Virginian that's a tad scary :holysheep:

I can't help but think that Noah's parents could trade you a little care time, or give you a night out alone or something! With all you've been doing, your body could be rebelling in the easiest way it has-- stiff sore hip. Don't beat yourself up because you're not following somebody else's recovery! You are following YOUR recovery, and it has its own pace. You have tons of stressful stuff going on, so your energy is spread thin. A bathtub will eventually fill, even if the water is just trickling (I think Confucius said that!), as in, your hip is the bathtub that will indeed fill up!

I am glad things are going ok though not on the frustration , your hubby not getting better etc.... I am stunned at winter storm OMG I am a northern gal too it's too soon. Yesterday here was hot and humid not normal at all.

Can you talk to someone like the doctor or in PT to see if your frustration has some basis?? I think it's all just too much for you but I am not a doctor.

I am so glad we heard from you... I worried.... Continued prayers

Hi Cheryl, @cpollock
I'm sure your mobility and flexibility will return, it's just taking some time.
I recall you went into this in rougher shape than some of us who you
may be comparing yourself to. Have you contemplated asking Jo for some advice?
You may get reassurance from her that your progress is where it should be
considering your condition at the time of surgery. Its seems like a safe assumption that
your other hip is acting up due to favoring the surgical side.

I'm sorry for your husband that he's still suffering, but also for you. Situations such as this set a
tone in the home which is supposed to be your safe and happy place. The place where you find rest and relaxation. I would imagine it doesn't always feel like a respite to come home these days.

While I'm sure Noah is a sweet delight and pleasant diversion... the excitement involved in him visiting
combined with the stress of an ailing husband and your recovery is probably draining. Possibly more than you
realize. I hope your able to get the rest you need and the time away from home and work on ocassion to re-charge.

I'm surprised you've experienced a winter storm this early.....wondering if that's normal? At least you got a paid day off work, that was a pleasant surprise I'm sure! I'll continue to remember you in prayer as you journey through the next weeks.
Best wishes for some peace and well deserved rest. Don't forget we're here for you...
Hugs

Hi Cheryl. Thinking of you. I still use my cane when my hip flexors and quad are complaining. Seems to help. We are still early in recovery so don't get discouraged. I was on another recovery site (btw this site was mentioned in a link) for dancers. I danced a bit when I was younger. One of the post THR patients/dancers mentioned that her OS told her pain and significant fatigue can be present 6 months or longer after surgery. The fatigue due to the extent of
"Metabolic insult" with this major surgery and subsequent inflammatory process. Good news is that this person had significant improvement by 11 months and continued to improve even into the 2nd year post-op! We have to remember this is a process that just takes time. I'm impatient too at times but so thankful the OA pain is gone. Take care... Rita

Hi Cheryl,
Hope today is finding you well. Just read its Thanksgiving weekend in Canada
with the holiday falling on Monday. Not sure how that looks in Canada.
Assuming a day off work? Does it consist of a big meal with family or
friends as many do here in the states? Turkey and all the fixings, any and everything "pumpkin"...
an over abundance of food!
No matter how you celebrate there, best wishes for a peaceful, relaxing weekend. Hugs!
@cpollock

Hi @Mojo333 and @zauberflöte The winter storm was short lived but a wake up call to get my winter tires on soon. It was really bad in southern Alberta for a couple days then it cleared but what a lot of snow. I will be taking care to not have Noah for a whole weekend unless Gary is feeling good enough to help more; on my own is a bit much for me at this time. I like the analogy of a bathtub filling up and comparing to my hip progression; I know I will get there and most days I'm patient - I just get these moments mostly when I'm tired or particularily stressed. I seem to have that under better control now. No need to be too concerned @MyAussieGirl

@Layla Thanksgiving consisted of turkey and ham at my Mom and Dad's; they made dinner this year. I brought a salad and made the gravy. There were 12 of us all together for Dinner, their house is small and particularly the kitchen so we scatter all over to eat. I have a very large kitchen and 2 living rooms but then everyone would need to drive to my place which is 20 minutes away; seems inconvenient for most. And with the energy drain I still did not want to offer anyways. It was a great family day and we all have lots to be thankful for.

Yes hockey season is in full swing @dougie0216 My team would be the Edmonton Oilers

Now for my update. I still feel stiff quite a bit and struggle if I'm up any length of time without my cane. The main thing is the OA pain is gone. When I limp around I get low back pain on the non operated side and stress that side as well. I'm at 16½ weeks now; guess that can still be considered early days as far as healing on the inside goes.

I see my surgeon again on November 24th so I will see what he thinks with my progress. I get new xrays done too just before my appointment.

Does anyone feel occasionally like you can feel the implant inside; almost like something is shoved in there? I don't know how best to describe it and it's not there all the time; mostly when I'm stiff. Could it be scar tissue or possibly some tightening inside? @Josephine what do you think?

I don't have pain, it's just a weird sensation and it tends to ease up as I move more. I know before my surgery and right after my leg was pretty bowed out to the left but that is coming along and it's probably 80% improved.

My operated side seems to improve a little each week. My surgery was due to severe hip dysplasia and the surgeon did say it was a complicated surgery and technical. I know I suffered years and the last couple I've been limping horribly but only used a cane the last year. And the energy drain I know can last a while; especially with working full time which I have been now since September 6th.

I sure would appreciate your insights Josephine.

I hope you're all doing well. Take care all. Cheryl

So happy all is evening out for you and you all had a good thanksgiving. You are such a kind person and we are glad to hear from you. Recovery can be slow, but oh so worth it.
Onward and upward.:roseshwr:

Hi Cheryl, @cpollock
So nice to hear your update.
I can't imagine snow this early. Especially if it stays for the duration. The longer it takes to start
piling up here, the happier I am. The older I get the more I dislike snow and cold.

It sounds like you had a nice Thanksgiving. We have over a month until we celebrate the holiday here.
Fingers crossed no snow by then...

We are in the early days of recovery, in the whole scheme of things and you came into this in pretty rough shape. I'm sure any issues you're dealing with will slowly continue to disappear. Hopefully Jo can shed light on some of your questions.

Take care and best wishes for continued recovery and a great weekend!

Hey @cpollock a quick post or two then I am net done for the night. I am glad you're going to ease up a bit on Noah when hubby isn't up to help. It's too much and kids are so high energy.

As to that thing you feel I do too I think it's normal till things tighten up but don't know anywhere as much as Josphine I'll be interested in what she sez.... I see my PA second time in about 2 weeks :snow dig: nooooo

Cheryl @cpollock so good to hear from you! I wonder if what you're feeling isn't just a bit of swelling making things feel fuller in there. You are very active so it might be a normal response to that. When I feel a somewhat similar thing, but not actually IN the joint (have never felt those), my leg gets hot on the outside of the thigh and everything around feels tight. That's my clue to what it is.

That snow is quite something. We were still having summer while you were being snowed in, although I expect your roads actually get plowed, don't they! Around here, you never know. The main roads can be as dry as bone, but school is still out because nobody can get out of their neighborhood, which has turned to glare ice on the streets.

I remember after my first hip (May 2013), we had a good snow the next January, 9-10" (I know, I know, but for here that's a whole lot) and I was out in the road after shoveling the driveway. Walking through the unplowed snow that had truck tracks in it, and I had the energy and the strength to do that-- I was overjoyed!

You are doing really well, and I hope that everything smooths out for your hubby very very soon. Life will be easier for a time. And when you do see Noah, you have to love on him for all of us!!
