THR Cpollock Surgery June 19, 2017<

No, my appointment isn't til a week from this Wednesday, which is August 2nd. Then we will see @Cisne if I can use the cane full time then. I was told not to rush it because I was in bad shape before the surgery and my leg needs more strengthening. Oh well, another 8 days with the walker.

We don't want to fall down and go boom. You are being so patient and so supportive to so many on this site.
Wishing you a good week!!!

@cpollock I echo other's reply you are doing great but I say better slow and steady back held back head high than use the cane too soon and suffer for it. I know it seems so slow been there done that will be there again sadly ....It does seem an eternity all I did was whine on here and in my head. I was so glad as restrictions came off bunches by bunches. You'll get there.

Right now I am eating mint chocolate chip ice cream no sugar added nom nom Thank you for always being an awesome friend

Most of the time I'm patient @Mojo333 and have come so far. I will listen to my body and let that be my guide.
I appreciate your support as well @MyAussieGirl I know you been there done that and speak from your experience.
Lets all try and make the best of our week. Cheryl

Hi Cheryl, just catching up on everybody's threads, sorry your hubby had a little mean streak there, I went through the same thing with the boyfriend. There was one point in the hospital when I was trying to get up and walk & the nurse told me he needed to leave, he was being so mean. Every once in a while I think the caregiving does get to him, he calls it being motivational, I call it being mean, but it has made me get up and do more for myself. I'm not sure I'm going to credit him with my speedy recovery for the most part he's very nice and sweet and I don't ask much of him but every once in a while he loses it. He's good at taking care of things, just not taking care of me, but I said in the beginning we barely survived my broken ankle, I was sure we would not survive this hip thing... but we are still together and things are going quite well! Sounds like you are progressing getting out for a little PT, and yes wearing real clothes and make up does make you feel human again, I basically live in my pajamas unless I have somewhere to go LOL.

HI @gaulsuerou I have an assortment of t-shirt nighties and kimonos for over top that I live in around the house, why get dressed in real clothes if you're not going anywhere. And it's a struggle getting underwear and pants on though it's getting easier. On occasion I get some company I have a skirt set I wear. I haven't been asking anything of my husband the last couple days so he does nothing, either for me or around the house. I can do most things for myself now anyways like meals and some light housework. Still can't tell drive til Monday. Gary took me to physio yesterday and then gave me the keys to my car and said I'd be able to take myself next week. I thought ok, that's fine and will be able to manage. Another milestone.... we live a half hour from the hospital so it's not too far.
@Gone again we both see our OS on the same day. I go to physio first at 9 then go see the surgeon. I have a list of questions to ask as they pop in my head. Around 12 of them so far.....
I'm going to do more walking today, I'm suppose to concentrate on taking bigger steps this week and also standing on my operated leg.
I wish everyone a great week and wish you well. Cheryl

Hi Cheryl, @cpollock
I think the time leading up to our surgery with the pain and limitations we suffer, coupled with the anxiety in the weeks leading up to surgery affect those close to us also. I'm not making an excuse for negative behavior but in realty our spouses are affected in many ways. My world shrunk as I protected my self from outings and socializing that I knew I couldn't handle gracefully.....without pain or complaining. This resulted in me not spending time away from our home with my husband, very often, over the past year to 18 months.

I think our partners want their life back as much as we do. They want whatever was "normal" for you as a couple before pain, lack of enthusiasm and limitations due to mobility set in. I don't consider myself a dependent person. Having never experienced a major surgery, or recovery, I've felt my husband push me a tad more than I was comfortable in some instances. Possibly our partners know us better than we realize, seeing our potential and realizing what we're capable of.

You sound as though you're doing well, following your OS's instructions, going to PT and being a beacon of light and support to others on this site through prayer and encouraging words. I know I've benefited from your words!
Wishing you a great day and all that's good in life!

@cpollock I echo @Layla 's comments (she said it so well!)...

Trust there are many on BS who are pulling for you. Saying prayers, sending positive vibes and well wishes as you improve little by little.

In times of distress as a child, my mother would always remind me... "this too shall pass". Our quest to get our lives back is temporary. We've taken the brave step of having surgery... We will recover and regain mobility and independence.

Our limits and restrictions are temporary. Hang in there! You've got this!

I lived in my nightgown for the first 3 or 4 days and then I started getting dressed. Nothing fancy - just jeans and tee but it helped me feel more "normal" because I never stay in my pjs all day. I needed my dressing stick at first but soon could so it without the stick. I felt like getting dressed, too, was a type of PT all it's own :heehee: As far as does, I have a pair of slides I can just slip my foot into or I wear sandles a lot so no socks needed although now I can put on socks with no problem. I guess I also wanted to be able to step outside to get the mail or check the garden when I wanted. While I don't live on a major highway, there is still plenty of traffic or tractors passing by on a regular basis and I didn't need them seeing me in my pjs :loll: Of course, like everything else, we are all different and have different thoughts and ideas and have to do what works for us.

You sound like your recovery is going well, Cheryl, and I'm sure you will get a good report from your OS. The list of questions is a great idea. I've started doing that as well because otherwise I always forget to ask something. Strange as it may sound, sometimes I forget to ask even when it is on my list!!

Here's a tip for your appointment next week @cpollock.
Get a wee notebook and write down all the questions you want to ask your OS.
We get such little opportunity to see them that it's important you don't come out saying " I wished I'd asked this"
Your improvements are slow and steady which is the way it should be.
Totally Normal.
@Mojo333 said on another thread don't be a superhero and I totally agree (she's a wise one).
Well done so far you.
Joe....

@ Layla Thank you for your views, I appreciate it.

@313Lola Your mother is as wise lady..... this too shall pass.... i know its all temporary.

I just like to be comfortable @GrannyC but I do understand what you're saying. My yard is a mess and the roads to walk on are not in the best condition so I'm indoors when I'm home. I can dress pretty good on my own now except socks, I still use the aid for that. I've given it some thought and I am going to start getting dressed daily , I think it's time. I believe it will help out in getting back to normal per say. Cheryl

@cpollock sorry you're going through such a hard time. I remember I hated just being in the house so much. I didn't get dressed for maybe 3 days then did
I felt it was better for me mentally.

Hugs hugs.....you rock

@cpollock Happy Anniversary Cheryl. I am glad that the therapy is identifying weak areas for you. My first turn at PT did not do that. It seems after the LTHR they wanted to make sure I could walk and do stairs without aids, and that was it.

Second time around I knew better. Now, I am happy to report, I don't have to hang on to a wall or the furniture, or sit down to put on undies or shorts. I can balance on one leg and do it. It has probably been six years since I was able to do that.
Pain, or anticipation of pain, had caused me to avoid doing certain, easy and essentials things. Who knew?!? I had to have surgery and therapy to find out, lol.
I am glad you are progressing. Keep it up!

I'm very certain that you are gonna just look back over all this and say, slow as it has been. It was well worth it..because I'm worth it.
Wish you had a little more support at home but as you said, you will manage.
I have all faith in you.
Sweet Dreams.
Tomorrow is going to be a good day!!!

This Friday is our anniversary. I will be almost 6 weeks post op and only take Tylenol occasionally. Do you think it would be safe to have a couple drinks? Has anyone else consumed alcohol this early in recovery? Cheryl
