Paul has been standing with his walker on his own for the past 3 1/2 weeks. He was able to shift weight from one foot to the other and to lift each foot up 20 times.
Yesterday, he told me he was going to move from the bed to the wheel chair without using the transfer board. I got his walker and he stood and was able to take small steps to make a quarter turn and sit in the wheel chair. He did the same from the wheel chair to his recliner. Then he was able to do the same from his recliner to the portable toilet by his recliner and back. (did this twice) Then later in the afternoon he made the same move from the recliner to his power chair so he could help make slaw. He's the one who knows how to throw everything together to make really gooooood slaw. Then it was back to recliner, and later back to wheel chair and to bed. Ten times he stood and made the quarter turn on his own to move from one sitting place to another. He was tired, but ecstatic! (me, too!)
Today two in-home PTs came to see if he could take some steps using our patient lift which he could hold on to and push forward while hooked to it with an upper body sling. He told them what he had done yesterday and that he wanted to try with his walker. One stood on either side while I brought up the rear with his wheel chair. His walker is a standard one with no wheels, which means he has to lift it each time he moves forward. (He does not have the balance to use a wheeled walker) He stood with his walker and walked eight feet, turned and walked eight feet back to his recliner, turned again and sat down. IT WAS WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!! And they were amazed.
In home services are now going to recommend out patient for him. We will be going back to the rehab facility we were going to before the surgery. They know him and his situation and they are an excellent facility with the BoneSmart philosophy of rehab firmly in place.
LIFE IS AWESOME AND GOD IS GOOD! Paul and his recovery are living proof of this. We are so blessed.
Judy, what a wonderful story you have to tell!!!! Paul is a miracle. Boy, those photos tell it all, don't they. I'm so proud of his progress. I bet his pride was bursting as he "showed off" for the therapists!!! I hope things continue to progress for you guys....this has been one tough road.
Judy and Paul, this is wonderful news, amazing news. Eight feet, wow! It sounds like he's made a " quantum leap" in two days time. You both are so inspiring. I am inspired by his determination and perserverance. Yours too--it's been a very long haul--but then Rome wasn't built in a day.

Judy and Paul,
AFter wiping the tears away, I can say what a tremendous day you guys had yesterday. Amaing what the powers of Bonesmarties on your side can do. Look out Judy he's on the go now. VERy very happy for the both of you. Keep up the great work Paul.
Paul had his first appointment with outpatient PT today. They did a general assessment. Leg and upper body strength is very good. His ROM on both legs is 113/8. Then he went to the gym and used the parallel bars to stand and walk.
Paul walked forward and backward the entire length of 12' three times for a total of 72'. He was game to do some more, but the PT wisely told him that it was enough for his first time out. Paul was surprised at how easy it was on the parallel bars and said that he was putting very little weight on his arms. He was very, very pleased with himself---as he should have been. We'll be back on Friday for a longer session of actual therapy. By the time we got back home and in the house, Paul admitted that he was pretty pooped and that it was a good thing he didn't do any more---but he is pumped and feeling more positive than ever since his surgeries.
Life IS good and GOD IS GREAT! And this forum and it's members have been the wind beneath my wings through all of this. I will be eternally grateful for each and every one of you.
Things just continue to look brighter and brighter for us.
