ByGosh. I read about a comparison study for calcified tendinitis, and they said the cortisone shots were as effective as surgically removing the calcification, and there was no recovery period. Now the shots are the preferred treatment. The surgery works well but there is a ten day recovery period. When I can't sleep I research. Probably doesn't help the insomnia.

The only question I could think of is what would be the best next step a. If the shots work -who do you see-how rehab works?
B. what is the next step if they don't work. I know oral Prednisone is one route, but are ther otherw? I would need to leave there with options and a beginning of a plan.

I have never tried to record a doctor, but it would be so helpful. I'm glad your husband will be with you and taking notes.

The hip joint space is apparently very difficult to reach without fluoroscopy-I think that's what they use.

I love the tea set jewelry idea. Could be very delicately done, and would be a fun charm bracelet, with tiny scones :)

You could get some wire and make earrings out of the little teacup and saucer and a necklace out of the commemorative plate. You know like the large clock that the one singer used to wear
You really made me laugh! ByGosh please do not wear this jewellery on our next trip out. Folk may think you've escaped from the local psychiatric hospital. Scarves are one thing - cups, saucers and commemorative plates are something else:heehee:    Rosxx

Dear @ByGosh- on this most important day please keep one thing in mind. However tough today is, remember that you are being held in the collective palms of all your friends here on BS. 'I will hold you in the palms of my Hands'. Good luck dear - all will be well    Ros xx

How very cute and clever! I'd love it.
I'm glad you do research LeeApril26 although sorry you can't sleep! That info you just posted helps me alot.
I mean to ask about what to do next, thanks for the reinforcement on that. I wonder how soon I could have a 2nd shot, if needed? Probably 3 mos. I will ask about the oral Prednisone, too.
An iphone can tape - my son did it once at an appt with me, and it was very helpful to listen to afterwards.

Nylsor It's almost time to leave, and I can't tell you how much I appreciate what you just wrote - not about the psychiatric facility, either! :) I'll remember that you're with me in spirit, and get comfort from that.
Thanks everyone.
I'm nervous! I'll let you know how it goes.

ByGosh. hmmn . . . Did not know an iPhone could tape. I can be a spy! Seriously, good to know this and that your doctor didn't mind. I have had an iPhone for years and did not know.

Hope all is going well.

ByGosh, I am so sorry that you haven't been getting the improvement you've been working toward. When we hear that this surgery is 95% effective (without complications) it is easy to forget that 5% of people DO have complications going through it, and they are so tough to bear. It is equally hard on the people who love you, like your husband. It is way more than the chores that are involved. He wants to help you recover and feels helpless not being able to do so. I sometimes wonder whether it is harder to be the patient, or to be the caregiver, having been on both sides of the equation now.

You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I hope that this process is just slower for you, and that you will get the help you need -- and the results you've been working for -- very soon.

Oh how nice of you to say that BeckyR :) I think both roles are equally hard - stressful for each person. I'd much rather be the caretaker, though. It's more my type of personality to care than be taken care of. But, I have no choice, so like you, I hope I will get better, too!
How are you doing? You're not even two weeks post-op, and you're so sweet to console me. I hope your recovery is coming along well for you. Take it easy and go slowly and keep us posted on your progress.
Thanks for your nice post to me. :friends:

Hello LeeApril26 Yes, my son used his iphone to tape. Now I don't know if it was an app, or part of the phone. I'll have to ask, as I don't have an iphone.

I had the steroid injections into the area around the tendons and hip joints today for the tendonitis. I took 1/2 pain pill before I went, but when we got into the xray room and I saw the tray laid out with 6 or 8 very large and very long needles, I told my husband to hurry up and give me the other half! :yikes: I'm not so brave when it comes to procedures that can hurt.
First we talked and I asked him my questions. He was patient and kind and answered all of them. He then sprayed on a cold numbing med that worked great. He was monitoring this all by fluroscopy on a screen. Next he injected marcaine, a local anesthetic which I hardly felt, then he aspirated 10cc (2 teaspoons) of pinkish-orangey fluid that was in my hip joint so he could send it for culture, crystals, and a cell count. He said it's not unusual for fluid to be there post-op, but I had more than usual. He does not think it's infected, he said. :what: He also said it could help some with the pain now that it's been taken out. It also didn't appear really cloudy or yucky to me.
Then he injected 1 cortisone medication first and the other cortisone next. (2 different types, one is triamcenalone acetate, the other begins with an 's' but I forgot the name.z0 I didn't feel any pain, really, only the sensation of the meds going in.
He then repeated the entire procedure on my left hip and again got 10cc of the same colored fluid to send off for analysis. This injection I did feel going in. He said each side can feel different.

I asked him what imaging could be used to make sure the implants are positioned properly and not rubbing the tendon. He said CT scan and 1 particular type of xray. So next he had two angular lateral xrays done and afterward showed me them. He explained where the cup was, and how it isn't protruding beyond the bone, so it's not rubbing on the tendon. There was some calcification of the muscle, but he didn't feel it was significant, said it can happen post-op, and didn't feel it was causing pain, and wasn't concerned about it.

The plan is for me to call on Mon and see what the results of the fluid was, and let him know if the injections helped. If they didn't help, he'll do a CT scan if I want (he doesn't think it's necessary) discuss everything with my rheumatologist and my primary, and come up with a different plan. Not sure which, but it could be an oral dose of prednisone, or there's surgery to lengthen the tendon (he isn't advocating that, but it is an option if necessary), and/or I can have another injection in 3 months.

So friends, it wasn't bad at all. I feel ok at the moment - a little less pain than usual, probably from the numbing med injection. By early morning, I'll know how I really feel - like if it made me more sore, or not. And in between 3-7 days I should know if it helped. :beg:

Now I'm just hopful it helps and I can get on with my recovery! Thank you all for your support and your caring - I thought of you when I was there, and I got through it just fine! :friends:  :friends:

That's quite an adventure, ByGosh! I certainly do hope you get some pain relief from this. Keep us posted, okay?

Also, let's tag Josephine, because I think she would be interested to know what's going on with you.

ByGosh.I am so glad that you got through the procedure just fine and it was performed by a skilled and caring professional who answered all your questions.Like all your other BS friends I will be hoping and praying for a good result for you over the next few days.

ByGosh. He sounds like a very good and very humane doctor. I'm relieved you weren't in more pain. I wouldn't be surprised if you are a little sore from all that poking and draining. It is excellent that the implants are positioned properly and that he was willing to take the X-rays to be sure.
I am wishing and hoping that by Monday you will be your energetic self. Rest and listen to Belleruth.

It was lovely to see them appear and chat to reporters with their new little son and actually he wasn't so little was he!! All the gun salutes and marching bands today, we do pom and ceremony in the UK so very well. :)

sandpiper Hi! I just posted about today's adventure. Look back a few and you'll see my tale. It went very well. Now to hope and pray it works! Thanks for checking in on me.
How are you doing?

Littlejem How are you doing? How's your recovery going, and is your back feeling any better? I'm so focused on my own woe that I'm not keeping up with my friend's surgeries. I hope that can change soon. Do let me know how you're getting on.

I have to turn on my telly and watch all of the excitement in London! :)

Somehow I didn't see your first post re your injections today!! I'm so pleased that you found them not too bad, that they didn't hurt too much, better to have taken the extra half of tablet I agree!! Not too long to find out if it's worked and if good wishes helped things along you'd be doing very well as we are all sending loads your way!! Keep us posted xx

Well done, ByGosh. I thought about you several times today and prayed that your procedure was going well and that the doctor was able to help you. He certainly appears to be very caring and thorough. Try to rest tonight and get some sleep. Tomorrow is another day and, we hope, a much better one for you than the ones you've suffered through.
As for the new Royal baby, he looks to be a sweet little man. And it is quite remarkable how this generation of Royals are so much more media friendly. We're glad that William got such a lovely wife and that they are so happy together. He's had quite enough sadness in his life. We hope that they will all be very happy.
And guess what? This morning I booked tickets for Mike and I to visit Buckingham Palace again as we want to see the exhibition of 60 years since the Coronation. We're going in August so I'll be able to tell you all about it. And we also booked a tour of Clarence House where Charles and Camilla live now. It was the residence of the Queen Mother for many years until her death. I don't suppose they'll let us into the bedrooms :heehee: but it's a new experience for us. I can't remember them opening it to the public before. I'll tell you all about it - we're going there in August too.
Goodnight, sleep well, dream happy dreams dear ByGosh Love from across the Pond    Ros xx
