I said do you speak-a my language and he just smiled and gave me a vegamite sandwich.....Maggie I was in the OR for 3'hours and had a spinal and happy juice. An epidural can be administered longer term than a spinal if that is an option....different protocols for different OS and Anesthesiologists I guess...my OS pretty much directed the whole show does yours have an opinion?

Vinny

I had right hip replacement on May 5th 2014 and then I had BTKR on the 8th of September 2014. I would definately get the cryocuff, I used 2 of them. It has been 18 weeks and I am going to the gym every other day with a trainer twice a week and am finding out that I never really rehabbed the hip properly even though I played golf a couple times a week in July and August.
I was looking online to find out how long before the pain would be mostly gone but haven't had anyluck finding the answer. I think it is just different for each individual. I'm 60 years old and have been retired for 10 years from high voltage construction work. It really took a toll on my body. I have already been to the driving range and all seems good but I plan to wait a couple more weeks until my legs are stronger. I lost 25 pounds in inpatient rehab because of the pain pills so I am working on getting some of that back.
I wish you the best, it's difficult but just stay positive and don't try and do too much.

Hi Maggie,
I also had my pre admission today. Very similar to yours. The MRSA swab was no big deal. (Whew...):ok:
I won't know the time of my surgery until the night before. I'm hoping I get an early spot.
I was told that I would have a cpm machine and maybe a cryocuff machine.
Well, one week from now I'll be on the other side and you and TexasTee will follow a week later.
Here's hoping we all have have a great journey!
Best Wishes
Karen

hi @thefigger thanks for dropping by, and thanks for your positive comments on a cryo cuff (I think you are referring to the Duro Kold that @vinny put me onto). To me having some way of icing in relative comfort is great - not cold leaky drippy things just strap em on and REST. Re losing 25lbs - I would LOVE to have the same outcome - lets face it I'd be happy with 10:heehee: - I'll report on that in due course - of curse some have actually gained weight - eeeekkkk

@kaw205 so glad to hear that your were spared a down under experience.... and that all your tests etc are goo to go. Yep lucky U are a week ahead of me and @TexasTee . I have to admit that in reality I am more than ready and prepared for the go go go green light.

that's it for now - cheers Maggie x

he he @vinny that song always reminds me of Australia winning the America's Cup in 1983... have you ever had vegamite? Looks disgusting - black & tar looking, salty - yummy on hot toast smothered with butter:thumb: Ausssie kids are brought up on it - vegamite & cheese is a great combo on a sandwich. Such cullenary deights - cheers Maggie x

Maggie some of the Brits here use Marmite which must be the equivalent to Vegamite and is definitely an acquire taste:yikes:....I remember 1983 Americas Cup very well as I was in a hotel in Toledo Ohio and a large contingent of Aussie's were there for a sales meeting...needless to say I did not have to buy a drink and almost missed my flight the next morning...another reason I no longer drink..as an aside Bermuda will be hosting the America's Cup in 2017 so make your reservations now

Vincent, I hate to tell you but marmite is very different to vegamite....guess you will just have to come to Oz to try it....

Read your reply to Dragons Tail... I have been wondering whether to throw the translation at him. That aside you had me laughing at the word picture of Stella going for the pillow.... mmm it needs a name. Put your mind to it. I can't think at night as I am a morning person... brain dead after midday.

I'm off to the land of nod.... Catch you later, Maggie x

Morning person too its 7am here.....I will take your word on the greatness of Vegamite...as an AmericanI doubt that we would have anything equivalent to it......as for my pillow I think I will name her Aisling but will not mention that to my wife...Holly may know the meaning of the name....pleasant dreams....

You can probably but it at a Whole Foods or wherever quality food products are sold....I know I have seen it in the States somewhere...I know it is stocked here as is Marmite and Branston Pickles...delicacies that are not part of the American diet....I just slather everything with mustard and mayo

@Maggie94 - I can't believe that you have less than two weeks to go! Time will fly. I remember last fall as I was preparing for my BTKR, I had such a mixture of emotions. I'm a control freak so I "needed" to be sure I had all my ducks in a row. But which row? There were different rows depending on whether I came directly home or went into rehab. I bought all the aids that our local support group suggested like the grabber, leg lifter, long shoehorn, back sponge, sock aid, etc. Most I hardly used because they were provided by the rehab hospital and by the time I left there, I was past needing them.

Anyway - that's not the comment you mentioned on my thread which was about lack of concentration after surgery. I had a book with me in rehab but just couldn't seem to concentrate on it - partly because of the activity and noise going on around me and partly because of my constant awareness of my knees. I don't think the drugs help with an unmuddied brain but they are what you need at the beginning and for a while. It's OK to watch mindless stuff on TV curled up in your recliner when you are at home. If you go to a rehab facility, and I hope you do - then they keep you busy. You also get to know your roomies and others who are going down the same path that you are, that you can chat with. And sleep- there is and needs to be a lot of sleep at the beginning. So, relax, rest, and do all the BoneSmart things that you know to do. The time will come when you feel up to doing the other things in your life. I'm on book 3 in the last few weeks, I've started several projects so my energy came back for those things several weeks ago. There is a time and place for everything!

My tea is cold and it's time to head out and discover what out-patient rehab has in store for me. Wish me luck!

thanks for that insight @Threads ... I had visions of devouring books, TV series and movies during the "rest elevate and ice" periods but it sounds like it is going to be Days of our Lives.... at least you have given me the "heads up" that bran fuddle is par for this course - thank you.

How was out patient rehab?? Hope you did OK and liked it (any of your rehab buddies there?). Yes, like you, I am also going to rehab - I think I will be there for about 3 weeks. Its only a short distance from my home - 2 km or 1.25ish miles. I'm kinda looking forward to that, aside from the hands on help I think the camaraderie of folks in the same boat is great medicine - just like this site - you have to have been there to really understand and empathize.

I'm off to my little doddle of a job now - helping a friend of mine who is a professional dog walker - I get the easy ones, usually 2 old boys, and the three of us just doddle along at the back of the pack. Chat soon - take care Maggie x

Netflix has been great. But must confess that I dozed off many times but a useful diversion....you will be super prepared Maggie and off to the races who you leave rehab..

Vinny

I agree @vinny - it was Netflix for me in rehab. My "other half" went out and bought me ear phones for my iPad. That way, at night when the nursing staff was encouraging me to head for bed, I was able to plug myself in and watch Netfix. I think I watched most of the series of Gilmore Girls in rehab and shortly after I got home. If I didn't totally absorb what I was watching - it really didn't matter :tada:

I agree Netflix would be great but it is not in Australia (yet)... site says coming soon.... in the next 12 days do you think???

What about local stations, public broadcaster, or ??? I know I was watching the BBC series Coast on my iPad via a local public broadcaster. We used Apple TV and AirPlay as well so we could both watch it on the TV. However, in rehab I just watched what I could get on my iPad. Luckily my rehab hospital had strong WiFi, something for you to check out? Good luck in finding mindless stuff to occupy your mind in rehab!

I just looked at Netflix earnings report and they mention Australia this year.....most likely you will be so busy running around on your new knees that you will not have time....:tennis2::bicycle1::hog::fasthorse:

Mindless entertainment is definitely about as much as I could cope with for about three weeks. I have loads of audio books on my iPod and generally drift off to sleep listening to those. Now I'm back to reading after nearly 8 weeks but only crime fiction. My brain is waking up slowly. I've watched so many Agatha Christie things, I'm beginning to hate the woman!
The time after knee surgery will pass and then you'll be up and doing.
BTW Marmite and toast was the only thing I could eat in hospital! Vegemite ( apologies to all Aussie fans) is not the same at all.
Best wishes for your surgery.

@Threads
just picking up form my post on your thread....Yes I think I am organised but each day I think of other things to do to get 100% organised. Today is packing an overnight bag for hospital admission (basically a pair of undies and toiletries), and a second bag for a friend to drop in when I am on the other side - this one will have hospital and rehab clothes, phone, computer and e-reader... I live in hope that I will be able to read a gentle mindless who done it.

Re the online TV... both you and @vinny were lucky enough to have access to Netflix - Vincent I do not have apples - I am android and PC based so Apple TV is out. However (Sandra like you) I do have the view when you want to access to the major TV stations here in Sydney so that is a big plus. In addition I have lots of movies and TV series that I have moved to soft copy so I can watch on tablet or via external hard drive on laptop or home TV... lots to entertain but with lack of concentration it may be mindless day time TV or old movies at night.

Oh the excitement of it all!!!

Hope everyone is having a good day today - if you are not chin up, it will pass - cheers Maggie x
