Hi Maggie,
Just wanted to wish you the best on the 28th. I'm looking forward to reading your recovery thread.

Hi Maggie,
Well, you're less than a week out and I made it to the other side.
I have to tell you that as nervous and anxious as I was, once at the hospital, I relaxed and after the spinal, remember nothing until waking in recovery.
When I got to my room, I tried texting some friends and kept falling asleep. Took me 2 hours to send a text!
I was well prepared and I know that you are too, so try and relax and enjoy. You'll be on the other side before you know it!
(((hugs)))
Karen

Hope you are doing great!! I'm so jealous that it's summer there- would love to spend some time at a pool or beach this weekend and forget the knee but it's freaking cold...ok, it's 50 something but still, NOT beach weather. Off to Hot yoga, it's 100+ in there, I can pretend for 90 minutes!

Hi Maggie!

I finally found your official thread and enjoyed reading your adventure up to this point in time. Enjoy your time up to your surgery and I hope your walk with the dogs went well. I am going to miss walking my pup during the first few weeks of my recovery as I have too many stairs to tackle and we don't have a fenced in yard. I am blessed that he will be able to stay at my daughters for a few weeks but man am I going to miss him!!

Hi all - back on the thread... been a bit sad the last couple of days - I had my beautiful Caddie put to sleep:boohoo:poor little darling - I miss the click clack of her paws on the wood floors and the constant companionship that only a dog can give you..... just FYI don't want to discuss this ATM

On prep for surgery.... have resurrected my old travel / money pouch to use to carry phone, $$ meds, tissues etc - great tip from this forum... it just slings round your neck and off you go - perfect.

On packing I have a "hospital" back pack - toiletries, night Ts, undies (will probably just go commando though), & slip on canvas loafers. Next I have a small bag with the electronics - phone, tablet & Kobo (e-reader) + chargers which a friend will bring them to me as soon as I am up on the ward after surgery. The advice is not to bring these things at admission because the hospital can't take responsibility for anything being "lost" - fair enough.

Lastly I have my airline carry-on bag packed for the 3 weeks in rehab - shorts, Ts, undies & swim ware (feels like packing for a resort:happydance:)

I have to admit to a small dose of nerves... just in the background. You know it is real when you have to shower with this bacterial wash stuff for 3 days prior to surgery and on the morning of surgery. This means this morning I get to be disinfected - including hair wash.... not impressed with this bit. They (hospital) also gave out instructions on the order to wash (and dry) body parts... top down with the private bits last:heehee: So got that all to look forward to.

Ho hum - the things we go thru - hope you all are well, recovering as pain free as possible or preparing for the odyssey - cheers Maggie x

Big hug friend - totally respect not wanting to talk about Caddie just now, I just lost my Mighty Quinn before Christmas.

On the hibiclens...are you sure you are supposed to put it in your hair? My hospital was adamant not to use on hair/face or the goodies :)

I've had flashes of the RUN AWAY!!! but take a step or two and I'm like...oh yeah, that's why. We'll do fine.

Understand where you are so for a blabbermouth will stay quiet
Good luck tho.

Hi Maggie, thought I'd hobble on over and see how you're travelling? Just 3 more sleeps til you're on the road to the rest of your life...how cool is that? Hope you have a super day tomorrow - it's lamb cutlets on the barbie all the way here! Happy Australia Day!

thanks all.

@TexasTee Teresa the wash we were given is Avagard which contains chlorhexidine gluconate 2% w/w... being the stubborn bunny I am I washed my hair, conditioned & then did the wash procedure (but not hair). Funny from my undergrad science days I remember that there are only 3 ways to kill bacteria... interrupt either their metabolic or reproductive cycles or lyse the cell walls - that meas bust the little nasties apart - soap does this so I don't get all this hysteria about antibacterial washes.... perhaps my knowledge is just too old (35 years ???) (T will post more separately on your thread)

Update - hairdryer into rehab bag + 6 pairs of ultra thin socks (second lot of 6, still new, that I bought in Hawaii a couple of years ago - yep went mad on the cheap cotton). PLUS reading glasses into the hospital bag (I have lots of pairs of these - chemist x1 magnification only - so can do this now)

Ok off to have a great day with this n that - hugs to all -Maggie X

Maggie so sorry for you loss.....keep your chin-up..and it is more than ok to be a little nervous. Anyone who says otherwise is a liar......I just know you will do great......couple weeks in rehab in that weather ...remember sunblock on the incision......

Best wishes

Vinny

I recalled today that I hadn't planned for nurse bait! I figure with the rampant flu and the general nasty germs in a hospital I'm best served with individually sealed goodies - I got dark chocolate with salted caramel dove candies and mini-snickers....those will work for both the nurses and my husband! I know I will get great care, regardless, but it never hurts to stack the deck and show your appreciation. After all - I tipped the lady that did my leg wax today but we won't tip our nurses...and I'd bet they both make about the same amount of money. Maybe I'll go buy more stuff to hand out!

@Maggie94 just stopping to wish you all the best for your surgery. The waiting is more scary than the actual operation. Well, that's what I found. It's just the day job for all the others involved. I hope all goes well and then you can start to recover with your two new knees .

Question people - I have just been reading some threads and "bed phobia" was mentioned - what is this (scared of going to bed but why???) Can I have some insight about how soon people used their own beds post TKR - just curious - cheers Maggie
