Best practices for OS to diagnose and recommend a THR

Do you have any skin infections?
Or just acne breakout?
Can you check with dermatologist for "careful handling" instructions and advice before you cancel?
Hate to see you keep suffering with a bad hip over fears of infection...will you let OS know that you cancelled due to concerns HE raised?

@Mojo333, I don't usually get skin infections, just acne breakouts. Lately I get them more on my lower thighs, too close to where the THR incision will be, that is my concern, and reason I canceled my surgery. Asked the Dermatologist about my acne breakouts, she said the location of acne breakouts can move on the body over time, she was not too concerned about my case, but recommended I use a topical antibiotic solution to prevent bacteria from causing an infection. But it is still not clear to me what causes acne and what I need to do to stop them?

:wave:Yes! Finally! So happy to see you back.
Let us help you keep your resolve...so by this time next year you will be back to a happy hip pain free life.
:happydance:

@Mojo333, thank you for welcoming me back.
I checked with my employer about going on Medical Disability for the upcoming THR; surprised to learn that while you are on Medical Disability you loose all company benefits, e.g. Health Insurance, 401K, commission ...
That was not expected.

@SelfHelp I'm trying to find the same thing out where I work. One person says if on Family Member Leave Act that you're still covered and another says no. Not sure if FMLA is the same as your medical leave or not. And Cobra coverage is outrageous!

I have a new date for THR with Dr. Dearborn, Wed 7/10/2019. Hope I can keep my nerves and resolve this time around!
It might help to have a goal post surgery. I will be having my 50th anniversary next winter and hubby and I made a goal to go to Hawaii. I could go without the replacement but it would be so easier post replacement with security lines and flying etc.. I have always wanted to hike among lava beds.
Try to trust your surgeon. If there were a real problem he or she would not be proceeding.. After all , surgeons do not want to have a bad outcome either. Their reputation is on the line as is your happiness. I googled your surgeon and he has an outstanding reputation.. listen to what he says and please please try to trust.

Hello @SelfHelp. You and I are going the same day!! My employer offered to cover my dental and Aflac ins for me till I was back to work. Of course my 401 was on hold till then, however i figured two months was a small sacrifice. I paid them back for the ins payments they made while I was out. Going to ask if they can do it again for me so I can receive Aflac benefits while I'm recovering. I wish you all the best. Six weeks to go, can't wait, can't wait! :loveshwr:

Elf1, best to ask your HR and on-site Occupational Health person. I learned that Medical/FMLA leave are treated the same way. My pay will have 2 sources, Disability Insurance (DI) portion from the State + Private Insurance which adds up to either 75% (or 90% of salary if the buy-up has been purchased). Everything that is payed for from my salary, i.e. medical premiums, 401K .. will stop. If I am on Medical Disability for less than 30 days I will remain on the commission plan, longer than 30 day and that will stop too.

Hi julesglass, you are lucky, you have a nice employer. I have started a daily exercise program, to strengthen the body and keep the mind busy, can't allow any doubt to occupy the mind.

@SelfHelp thanks for your input. Actually just received word back today through our Admin that as long as I take FMLA they will cover my insurance, was very surprised about that. And, though it's a very small amount I can also get short term disability. Every little bit helps!

Having my pre-op appointment Thu 6/27/2019. It includes blood-test, EKG, Staph test, Anesthesiologist evaluation, followed by a 2 hour educational class.

This sounds ideal! I think it’s possible I won’t talk to the anesthesiologist until immediately before my surgery - likely after some preliminary medication. So, your protocol sounds great. Looking forward to the details.

 @SelfHelp
So glad to see you are finally getting this done!:happydance:
You have a ready made cheering squad.
When is your surgery date for getting this left hip good to go?

You so deserve to have your life back and I know you have analyzed and researched all that you could.
(Probably too much as you've had your delays)
You are going to officially be a July sparkler and I bet you are going to do just Splendidly!!
Now stay well and do let us know your impression of the pre-op appointment!
Now to get that signature fixed.

Gee, I remember now I saw this a month ago.
I am getting forgetful...it's surely the new hips:heehee:
Already have you in the group...

Connected with my OS because I am a nurse one of the hospitals he does surgery in. His patients rave about him, many were elderly with other problems and some even had him do revisions of older surgeries. The infection control nurse said they very very seldom get notified of postop infections in his patients. So I had great confidence in him.
We did PT and hip injections-- for me it just delayed the inevitable.
Like many have said here, my life just became so limited and my sleep was terrible. He saw my x Ray's and showed me over the 3 years since my last ones he had done had worsened. It was the only option left so I gladly took it.
BTW,I had r hip done May 1 and left is scheduled for August 21st.
Because I wanted him to do it I consented to the time span between, never questioned what type of approach, or what type of hip I was getting.
I had hired him because he knows his stuff.
The surgery went well (my very first one at 62!) Recovery is a road for sure but it gets better every day.
I am amazed and grateful that this surgery exists and that the results are so good for the vast majority of people. No medicine is an exact science
But I picked a good surgeon, did as I was told and all is well.
I hope and pray no 2 goes well, no reason to fear the surgery, it is amazingly slick.
I have seen personally some complications with surgeries in patients who werent healthy going in, another reason I wanted it done now is that I am healthy.
I saw it all as reaching for a better life and turning away from the limits and the pain!!
