Best practices for OS to diagnose and recommend a THR

Kind of a shame that I can't show them off considering how much they cost. I guess the X-rays will have to suffice :)

:heehee: I have thought the same.
The over 120,000 dollar woman...I could have had all kinds of much more figure flattering additives for that kind of dough.

Holy moly, you got a bargain! Mine tallied up to nearly $250K - EACH!
Guess that's the price I pay for living in the Golden State :cheers2:

BOGO deal? Only if you do it at one time?

@SelfHelp Hope you are hanging in there...my bad hips really took a toll on my spirit...THR has been lifechanging!:ok:

Mojo333, thanks for asking; looking back, my hips degraded gradually over past 6+ years, I gradually gave up things that were painful, like the gym, sport car too difficult to get in and out, hiking,... less activity has led to weight increase, high blood pressure...
Years ago I promised my wife a trip to Europe once my hip was fixed and I could walk longer distances. That promise is probably the main reason I will get the this done. The question is when :)

My best guess is ...and you could push it is you wanted...about 8 Months post THR.
If you are really determined to give it the appropriate time to heal..I think you would be oh so happy to deal with a nice trip.

I did a trip to Ireland 3.5 months after my first THR. It was mostly driving, with small walks and short day hikes. But there was one day in Belfast where I must have put on some good mileage. The ironic thing, though, was that my new hip bothered me not at all. It was the other 'real' hip that was totally angry with me. The key was that I didn't plan - and didn't do - long walks every day. It just happened that we were having a good time, and I never felt like I was overdoing it. That is, until the other hip decided to chime in.

All depends on the type of trip, and how active you want to be. I even found the flight to not really be an issue. Just got up every so often, moved a little, and relaxed when I could.

Where in Europe are you guys planning on going? So many places there I still want to see. I think Germany is next for us when we go.

My mother was Germany, I want to go back to her hometown near Cologne and visit with relatives. Then head south to Switzerland and north Italy. There are several cities I like to see along the way, like Trier and Konstanz.
These days I can walk up to approx. 4 miles a day. If I push myself beyond that it gets painful. I don't want to be limited by pain on our vacation, I like it to be a memorable vacation.

I have a date!
Had a new patient consultation with Dr. Dearborn today, I had a list of prepared questions that he took a lot of time to answer in detail, he did not make me feel rushed at all, I felt very comfortable with his style and method, at the end he asked if I felt ready for THR and if I had preference for this year or next year, I took an opening he had for 12/14/18 with Pre-op date 12/06/18. I can't believe I did it.
Now I wonder if I did the right thing, it's only few week away. Am I really ready for this?

Well done on getting your surgery date! Yes, you certainly did the right thing. That hip is only going to get worse. The faster it's gone, the sooner you can head out on that European vacation. We are with you through this journey.

Oh yea!
:egypdance:
Next year will be Your Year!
My date was set rather quickly, and in hindsight...that was good as a loner wait would probably only given me more time to get more anxious!
A new hip by Christmas!
We will all be Cheering for you.:ok:

Hi Jaycey and Mojo333, thank you for your encouragement. Based on your experience is it ok to have a pre-op only one week before the operation day? Is 1 week enough time to complete all the prerequisites for the surgery? I need to go through the "Patient Handbook" I received to understand their process, but I remember reading here that you need to have checkups done to be cleared for surgery?

Plenty of time. This is just a last minute check that you are in good health and ready for the op. Usually urine and blood tests, an ECG and then they will probably go over the basics such as checking into the hospital. You may also speak to the anesthetist and PT. All very routine and usually takes a couple of hours. Be sure and take a list of questions if you have any. This is a good time to clarify things like if you will have any restrictions.

:hi: I had my pre-op appointment the Friday before Monday surgery!
This waiting part is the worst!
You are going to do just great and we will all be happy to finally see you on the Healing Side!:yes!:

Last Thanksgiving with bad hip, @SelfHelp !
Hope you eat lots of turkey and have a Good Day!

How concerned should I be about pimples causing an infection? Reading this from Josephine is concerning: https://bonesmart.org/forum/threads/acne-pathogen-implicated-in-peri-prosthetic-infections.36429/
In consultation with OS he confirmed he has seen case of careless handling of pimples lead to hip infection.
As far as I can remember I have had more or less pimples somewhere on my body. These days I see small pimples on my thighs, scalp or face. Never worried about them in the past, casually popped them, don't remember any get infected or needing medical treatments. I assume these pimples are caused by oily skin linked to my diet and having fatty foods. I don't have a gallbladder anymore, therefore fats don't get digested well, that explain why I am sensitive to fatty foods. Assume some of the nasty pimples were ingrown hairs, but not sure. Body and skin managed it and all healed without complications.
Now with THR ahead I am rethinking my casual attitude, wonder at what stage should I be concerned about pimples and acne resulting in an infection? When does it become dangerous? Have you also worried about it and what do you do about it? How do you mange pimples and acne? Do I need to get this under control before THR?

Maybe you can try exfoliating the skin...there are exfoliating body washes. This is what I found:

P. acnes is considered to be anaerobic, meaning that it cannot survive in the presence of oxygen. In a normal skin type, there may be P. acnes bacteria present in the follicle, but the amount remains low, because the presence of oxygen in the follicle helps to continually kill bacteria. That is one reason why exfoliation is so important for all skin types, especially for clients who are prone to breakouts—sloughing off dead skin cells will allow oxygen to reach P. acnes bacteria.

Thanks for the suggestion, Mojo333! Am I the only one here with pimples? Or do I worry too much about it? I admit, infection is a risk I have not been able to wrap my head around yet. Don't quite understand what my risk is.

That would be a good topic to ask about during your pre-op appt. if you have a concern. Or even call the surgeon's office and talk with a nurse or PA about it now.

I get the occasional pimple on my legs, face etc. Hasn't been an issue for either of my THRs. I would imagine the risk to be higher if you are someone suffering from severe acne breakouts. If it were a huge worry, I'm sure you'd hear more about it given the sample size of this forum.
Don't let the panic set in - as @jaydub63 mentions, give a call to the Doc if you need to settle the nerves!

I am losing my resolve over fears my acne/pimples may lead to an infection. Plan to cancel my THR scheduled for 12/14/18 and see a Dermatologist to get a handle on this. When I heard from OS that he has a case of infection caused by careless handling of pimples I started to panic. Canceling my THR is a setback and I feel defeated.
